They're Back!

I wait for them every year.

They are amazingly delicious.

They go fantastically with crackers.

They are....

(Tom looks high with the cheese ball because A) he doesn't like smiling for pictures which stinks because today we have our family photos and I'd rather he didn't look high and B) because he didn't get why I had to take a picture of him with a cheese ball.)

CHEESE BALLS!

I had a hair appointment yesterday at the mall so when I saw the Hickory Farms stand set up my heart started to race.

I had been waiting for them for weeks.

I would even say to my husband Tom, “Aren’t you excited about the cheese balls?”

Then he would be crass and reply, “I wish you were just as excited about ANOTHER pair of balls,” and he’d gyrate his body at me.

Gross.

Anyhow, when I saw the stand, I rushed over and went, “It’s here!” I meant to just think it but I get a case of verbal diarrhea when I’m excited sometimes. The worker was amused. She smirked at me and went, “Can I help you with something?”

I headed straight for the cooler where all the cheese balls are kept. Hello cheese balls. Remember me? I picked up an original one and a sharp cheddar one. Maybe I wasn’t supposed to grab them myself because when I picked them up, the worker made a strange noise and went, “I’ll get those for you.” I wanted to say, “It’s okay. I’m not germy. I don’t have swine flu. I’m just in love with these balls.”

But that probably would have sounded wrong.

I got my hair done after that. This always takes awhile because I have so much hair. The stylist ran her fingers through my hair and went, “It’s so thick!”

It’s also unruly. It’s only cooperative when expensive creams go into it but I’m sorry, I’m not about to drop thirty bucks for cream. So unruly hair it is.

I had my root re-touched. I’m supposed to come in every six weeks to do this.

I usually come in around every 4-6 months.

Ooops.

The thing is, I already have gray hair. I get that from my Dad (thanks, Dad) whose hair started to turn gray when he was 17. But since I don’t come in to get them colored every 6 weeks, they start to pop out and people are all, “What are you doing with gray hair already?” and I’m say quite plainly, “Genetics. And mouthy children and husbands.”

  5. It's not a holiday until food comes in unusual and odd shapes. Cheese balls, jello mold, etc.

  6. But, if you hold the cheese ball over your root line, everyone will be too wowed by its cheesy goodness to notice those little grays...

  7. I have to watch those cheese balls- I'll eat an entire one by myself in one sitting.

  8. I've never had a cheeseball. Is it like dip?

  10. You are too funny!

    Here's another great recipe:

    Lemon Cheese Ball

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
    1/4 cup butter
    1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
1 tablespoon powdered lemonade mix 1/4 cup graham cracker crumbs

In a medium bowl, mix the cream cheese, butter, confectioners' sugar and lemonade mix using an electric mixer. Refrigerate for 3 hours.

When the mixture is completely chilled, shape into a ball and roll in graham cracker crumbs. Serve on a platter with graham crackers.

    So yummy!!

  11. mmmmm.....Cheeseballs.... I too have stupid gray hair at the age of 31. Oh wait, I've had them long before now. I was just in the bathroom and saw one sticking up. I really need a color, perhaps tonight!

  12. Oh my god, I'm going gray too. I have been since I was 19. And I don't even have kids or a husband to blame them on.

  13. I needed this out loud laugh today...thank you and I am off to find some cheese balls in San Francisco. The best post sweetie!

  14. I've never had a cheeseball before! Obviously, I've been missing out!

  15. So I'm not a cheese ball person, but I do totally understand. I wait all year for Easter so I can binge eat cadbury mini eggs and cream eggs.

Enjoy your cheese (and new haircut).

  16. Erm...I don't think we have cheeseballs in the UK but they look yummy!

  21. You had me at cheeseballs!

I love me some cheeseballs (she says as she frantically runs to get the keys and drives 60 mph to the mall to get one).

I'm gray already too...been coloring my hair since I was 29...I get it from both sides! And my hair is really thick too! I have to use 2 boxes of color! I feel your pain.

  22. Oh those yummy cheese balls! Love those and Hickory Farms makes great ones. I used to make my own but now with a little one and blogging, no time!

Got you hair done and it's thick! I'm jealous!

    Now, please pass the crackers!

  24. Another dumb UK question.

    Cheeseballs?

*I get that its balls of cheese. Duh. But, well, why? What are they? What do they do?*

  25. Mmmm, cheese balls. My ex sister-in-law makes one with cream cheese and green onions and that thin-sliced ham all chopped up and then rolled in toasted pecans ...

Wow, I've gotta get to the grocery store. *wipes drool*

  26. Mmmm...Hickory Farms cheese balls and I love the summer sausage too!!

I've had white hair since I was 24, started with a streak in the front that I thought was cool until someone told me I looked like Bonnie Raitt.

    I've been coloring ever since.

  27. I've been avoiding the mall because I've blamed my blooming butt on these tasty contraptions. I had to blame it on something.

  28. my hairdresser says she's never found one gray hair ever

    i'm 38

that's why i always tip her 10 bucks

    ReplyDelete
  29. Don't love the cheese balls, but would consider working at Hickory Farms to get a discount on summer sausage. Oh my! Hairdressers, gray hair and the amount of money they require is not a good subject for me. I've been gray since my late 20s and don't love it. At all.

  30. I love me some cheese ball! My mouth is watering

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wait til you find a gray hair in your eyebrow...that's sexy.

    What is a cheeseball????

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love, love, love cheeseballs. And I need a haircut.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You know. . . I don't ever think I've actually HAD a cheese-ball. Which is weird, cuz' cheese is one of my most favorite things ever. I'm going to have to fix this situation.

  34. I have thin flimsy hair, but at least its not grey. I guess we each have our positive and negative hair traits!

  35. You know what is funny? I love almost every single food in the world. Seriously. Sadly! I never really got into cheeseballs though... Crazy, right. Some men have the hardest time looking normal in pictures. My brother tries so hard and he always looks like a wierdo! Maybe if I try posing him with a cheeseball that will help : )

  36. "I wish you'd get that excited about another pair of balls..." just choked on my latte! Ha!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I have no idea what cheese ball is, but, if has more calories than I'm supposed to eat then I'm sure I'd love it. And I prefer to talk about "silver hair", I tell myself it's festive.

  38. My husband would definitely make a comment like that about balls- though, he can turn just about anything into something suggestive. At least he doesn't mind when all I do about it is laugh at him.

I too have incredibly thick hair. It's a royal pain.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Tom and my husband must be related because I'm pretty sure that's exactly what he'd say. "Gross" would be my response too.

I love Hillshire Farms meltaway mints...mmm...soo good.

And I need to color my hair again. Silly gray hairs...they are even curlier than my normal hair.

  40. Cheese balls are seasonal like eggnog and Chia pets? I never knew.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Clearly I have lived a very sheltered, boring life because I have never sampled a cheese ball. Have I therefore not yet truly lived?!!? Maybe I'll have to try one this year.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Don't feel bad, I have a TON of gray hair. It's starting to become really noticeable. I'm almost to the point where I need to get it colored often, but I'm so resistful of dropping all that money...my hair looks like poo if I try to color it myself. Enjoy your balls ;)

    ReplyDelete
  43. As always, thanks for the laugh. Wow, you make it in to get re-touched every 4-6 months? Impressed. I seem to only make it in when my roots are the whole length of my mid back hair!! And if you think you have greys now, wait until Natalie is a tween!! I have white hairs popping up in the most disturbing places ;)

  44. Cheese balls!!! Yummmmmmmm

I have an award for you, come on over and pick it up. Thanks for making me smiles :)

  46. How does one eat a cheese ball???
I'll ask my boyf. Who will ALSO make a 'balls' comment.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Try to control yourself now. Are you saving those cheese balls for the holidays or are you going to just dig right in?
