Care To Dye?

We dyed some eggs on Saturday.

I actually wanted to skip this.

I’m not big on crafts or anything that can potentially make a huge mess. Mainly because I spend most of the day cleaning up messes so why in the world would I want to add to it?

But Tommy was aching to dye some eggs so I got a kit and promised that we’d do it.

Natalie naturally wanted to join in.

Only she didn’t quite get the concept.

First she tried to drink the dye. “Juice!” she said when I set the mug filled with colored water in front of her. Then she lifted it up and took a sip.

“Not to drink, not to drink!” I shrieked. “To dye…to dye the egg.”

“Okay,” Natalie said, grabbing an egg. I assumed she knew what she had to do.

I was wrong.

The little minx smashed the egg over the dye.

“I sorry,” she said.

Then she gave me a wide smile. Her famous you-can’t-get-mad-at-me smile.

Meanwhile, Tommy knew what he was doing.

He made an egg version of Carrot Top.

And several other eggs. Coincidentally, this is my reaction when someone shows me a bar of chocolate.

And this is my reaction in the morning before I’ve had my caffeine.

Seriously.

Same hair and everything.

Only mine is brown.

  1. We didn't dye eggs this year. All that mess makes me nervous and it's just wasn't worth it with 2 kids who would likely fling it up to the walls and 1 who wouldn't care anyway.

  2. We didn't do the dye this year! It was messy enough last year, and two of my three kids are young enough not to ask for it - so until they specifically request to do it, it's not gettin' done.

And anyway, I had enough mess with the damn Easter basket grass and the chocolate smudged all over my house. Ugh!

  3. I think if you have kids, it's mandatory that you dye eggs.

  4. The hubs wanted to dye eggs with the 16 month old and I was like NO WAY - let's put off that mess as long as we can.

    Cute eggs though

  5. Those turned out cute. We didn't dye eggs this year. I just couldn't bring myself to deal with the mess. Though I do have the dye. Maybe this week....

Love that grin! She's a cutie.

  6. The egg making is a mess but at least it can be cleaned up. Easier now that my kids can do it themselves.

    Very cute pictures thanks

  8. Those are super cute! I'm with you re: mess-making, but it's one of those mandatory kid+easter things. :-)

  11. Tommy's eggs are SOO cool!

We colored eggs with my 19 mo old and she actually did a great job. We used a wire whisk and placed the egg inside that. She then was able to 'stir' her egg in the colored water, which she loved. She is a stirring queen.

(got the idea from the Family Fun magazine!)

  18. This was obviously a successful endeavor since Natalie is not colored blue or red or yellow and the eggs turned out quite charming!

  19. We hard boiled out eggs and the little kids still managed to squish them.

  20. I haven't dyed eggs in SO LONG. sigh.

  21. We totally forgot to dye eggs this year. Another check in the list of my mom of the year award accomplishments.

    Tommy did a fab job!

  22. Hahahaha. Question- you don't hard boil your eggs?

  23. That is awesome! Hayden just wanted to stick as many eggs he could in the "dye container" and then take them out... they were not pretty. But he enjoyed himself.

  24. We didn't dye eggs. I wanted to, but we ran out of time. Of course, my kids are 13 and 15. The 13 yo got up Sunday AM early. When I got up he said "I found where all the eggs were hidden." I asked where did he find them. He told me in the bowl on the stove. I said, "Yeah, the Easter Bunny doesn't hide white eggs, unless it's a snow storm." He looked at me a little sheepishly. LOL

  25. Cool! I've never seen eggs with hair before!

...and yeah... Its hard to get uptight with someone that lays a smile like *that* one on you!

  27. I got off easy this year...didn't even have to get her an Easter Basket. I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

  28. Hairy Eggs! So funny!

Mine are old enough now that I kind of have to FORCE them to dye eggs. We ended up with a lot of depressed looking teenage angst eggs. I blogged a picture of them if you want to see what your future holds!

  29. Amber, you are hilarious! I admit that Carrot Top Egg is pretty cool :)

    Love Natalie's grin!

  30. Instead of dying eggs this year, we wrapped them in silk ties and boiled them. They turned out amazing, and thrift store shopping for awesome ties was so much fun!

I love the carrot top eggs though; I'd love to make some of those next year!

  31. I suddenly feel the urge to eat eggs for breakfast.

Cute pics. Natalie probably gets away with a lot with that smile of hers!

  32. Oh man is that cute! We didn't get around to it, but I kind of wanted a blue kid because I just KNOW she would dump the bowls on her.

SHe was red for Christams and I had a little Elmo for 3 days!!

  33. Egg dying is always a fiasco here. A couple Easters ago, my husband and the boys grabbed the wrong carton and dyed raw eggs. I always try to get out of this project, and was successful again this year. Of course, I had to go to a funeral to do so, but I was willing!

  34. I did eggs with my 2.5 and 3.5 year olds. They had fun, but we used plain water and food coloring! Not alot of mess and no dyed fingers. :D The pictures are cute and Tommy's eggs look great!

  35. I love Tommy's eggs...and the smashed egg is something you will never forget!! ...and you have pictures to back up those stories someday.

Thanks for being my FB today...love ya!

  36. Looks like fun in spite of it all! They are still the cutest kids ever!

  37. Thanks for visiting Gropius. Adorable kids. And I know what you mean about ignoring the freaking messes--especially on holidays. For Pete's sake, there's enough to worry about! But look at these lovely egg-headed creations. So worth it. P.S. Also have a son with ADHD and loved Labrynth.

  38. Dying eggs is such fun! When I was about Natalie's age, I ate one of those dye tablets. It was red, and I was foaming at the mouth big red bubbles. Mom didn't know what the hell I'd done. She'd just turned her back for a moment. Can you imagine? She called poison control once she figured it out, and as it turns out...while you aren't supposed to ingest the tablets, they won't really hurt you. I wonder how long my mouth was stained.

  39. She really mashed that egg! I have real anxiety about the egg dying too. This year my five year old did it all on her own and actually did a wonderful job. Sometimes you get rewarded for letting go a little. Sometimes.

  40. We have only dyed eggs a few times. No one here eats hard boiled eggs much so it seems like a waste!

    Cute egg hair.

  41. Lol, love the eggs! They came out great.

  44. I LOVE the fuzzy hair on the eggs...what a great idea!

  45. I miss dying eggs for my kids. Course now they're 28 and 30 so I don't think they'll want them anymore. I'm not around for Easter so my grandkids can't enjoy them either. Darn!

  46. Those are some great looking eggs! This year, I discovered using a whisk to dip the eggs in dye. You just pop the egg inside and the kids dip it in the dye, so much easier!

  47. Those are some awesome eggs. Love the 'fro!
