To Tell You The Truth

I have a confession to make.

I'm not the best with small talk.

So when I went in to get my hair done last week, I was nervous about how I'd converse with the hairdresser.

The person who did my hair was a gay guy who had done my hair before. He just reminds me that I need a gay best friend, and stat. He's done my hair another time and remembered me because, well, I have a lot of hair. And it's ultra thick. I don't have the same hairdresser because I never know when I'll get to go in and get my hair done...so when I call and make an appointment, I ask for whomever is available.

It's pretty easy to talk to the guy in the beginning, but then silences fall and I'm always like, "Should I keep talking? Should I stay silent? WHAT? WHAT should I do?"

The people around me seem to know exactly what to do. They'll ramble on and on and, well, I'm not much of a rambler unless I'm drunk.

"So...um....have you ever been to London?" I finally spit out and then felt like an idiot. I mean, who asks that? I could have inquired about what he was doing for the holidays but no, I asked if he had ever been to London. And he hadn't, by the way.

Then another silence fell.

Crappity crap.

But then...

Then the hairdresser started telling me about a client who came in and said she wanted her hair cut short to her shoulders. So they cut her hair short and now she's complaining that it's TOO short and is expecting them to pay for extensions.

"Like Paris Hilton has?" I asked dumbly. Seriously, I am SUCH an idiot. It's like I don't get out enough. And okay, I really don't but still. I should know how to talk normally to people.

"Yeah, like her," the hairdresser laughed. "But that's like a $1500 job so of course we're refusing, and she's raising more of a stink and...it's probably going to come down that we'll have to have all our clients sign permission slips before we can do anything with their hair."

"That's a shame," I mused. It really is. What is WRONG with people these days? It seems everyone wants everything for free. They'll complain about everything to get the free stuff.

My hair, by the way, was getting much needed highlights. See, I have gray hair and no that's not a figure of speech. I literally have GRAY HAIR thanks to my Dad, who got gray hair when he was seventeen. Did I get his straight teeth? No. Did I inherit his awesome eyesight? No. But I DID get his gray hair. Thanks.

It had been...oh, six months since I had last had my hair done so it needed it.

Here is the outcome:

Much better, no gray.

And yes, still somewhat long, but only because I really don't have the face for short hair. It's like round and puffy. My face, not my hair.

Plus, I sort of like having long hair, since so many people have short hair. People usually remember me thanks to my hair.

It's probably because it's long and frizzy, but still. If I could afford to fork out the stuff they use in my hair at the salon, it would probably be tamer, but I refuse to fork over forty bucks for a bottle of shampoo.

  1. I inherited that from my dad too. Sucks.
I love your hair. I'd love to grow my hair out, but I always get frustrated and take a pair a scissors to it. I am determined to not cut it until summer-time. Wish me luck.

  2. I'm growing my hair out right now. Jealous of your length! And it looks really healthy, too, which is an accomplishment for hair that long.

  3. When you have hair like that, you should definitely keep it long1 It's gorgeous!

  4. Amanda you have the most beautiful hair, don't cut it short, ever!

How sad that hairdressers are starting to get people to sign a waiver before they will cut hair, what is wrong with people? It's hair for Pete's sake, it will grow back in a few weeks!

  5. The hair looks great and small talk sucks so bad. I'm dreading the holidays where I will be forced to hear 3 hours worth of weather talk.

  6. Your hair is beautiful! I am highly jealous... I am growing mine out and I want it to be long... like now! I suck with the small talk too, I am extremely inept with the social niceties...

  7. Hey...you really do have a beautiful hair. You should keep it long and small talk, please don't go for that. It really is annoying...we get plenty here (my place). I am really sick of it..

I really like your name...It's Amber, right..not sure how is it pronounced...In Hindi, which is our national language your name means ' sky'..

  8. Good Lord, you DO have A LOT of hair. And I only say it that way because I'm maybe, perhaps a little or lot bit jealous of such lucious locks. Way to rock the highlights....looking GREAT!

I love chit chat, however, that is not to say I haven't had my fair share of awkward silences. Good thing you got the gay guy, they're usually always good for conversation....and laughs!

  9. I love the colour.

You should cut some layers and it won't be so heavy.

  10. You have great hair! And don't mind the gray... my older sister had her first white hair the day before she married (she was far from thirty). I'm still wiating for mine, but maybe I simply don't see them because I'm a blonde.

  11. Beautiful, dahling!

  12. Your hair looks great!! I never know what to "talk about" while getting my hair done so I will try your approach and as if they have ever been to London lol

  13. I love it! It makes me want to go out and do mine now!

  14. I hate making small talk too - luckily I've now been going to the same person for a couple of years (I get my hair cut every 3/4 months or so), and we've built up a bit of an acquaintance so we can have a decent conversation now.

I think your hair cut is lovely, but I'd put some layers in it to soften it a bit and not make it obvious that it's so thick.

I have been grey since I was 26 but have been dying my hair since I was 16!

  15. Beeeautiful hair! I refuse to leave the long hair club either even though my mother keeps telling me a woman with three kids needs to keep it shoulder length or shorter. She says I look like a hippie. ANYway, you should just move to france. The hairdressers do NOT make small talk here, to say the least, so you don't have to worry about it.

  16. oh your hair looks great! and I have two gay bffs and i swear i wouldnt be able to live without them!

  17. Your hair (and you) look very nice.

If the "too short" lady sues - our so-called justice system is sooooo slow she will have hair down to her toe knuckles before anything is settled.

  18. SO JEALOUS. Your hair is GORGEOUS.

  19. The pic isn't loading here at work, but I'm sure it's lovely.

    $40 a bottle?

I don't pay that much for Head!

    Or shoulders.

  20. I think it looks great! And I love long hair! I have it but it's fine and thin so basically the opposite of yours haha but whatev.

  21. People are unbelievable. But then again, they get away with it so why wouldn't they try.

  22. The small talk is reason #1 of why I don't go to a traditional salon. My friend cuts my hair, at her house. And we normally haven't talked for a while, so we have plenty to talk about. I hate small talk. I rather sit there quietly w/ someone I don't know, but I figure they don't. So I make up small talk and it doesn't go well...

At least you got FANTASTIC hair out of the deal! Looks great!

  23. Aww how purty! The girl that does my hair is a friend of mine so we usually just gossip and sometimes I bitch. Ok, most of the times I bitch about stuff.

  24. You're hair looks great! I love the length!

  25. WOW! I love your hair!! I wish I had more lol! Mine's long but is fine fine =/ I also love the color =)
I just got my hair done and I LOVE my lady. At first I was pretty quiet but since I have been going to her for 3 years, yesterday was FINALLY NOT awkward =)

  26. Love it!

I find that STDs always make a great conversation starter.

  27. The hair looks great - I love the colour. My hair is long too and I like it for the same reasons. It's much better for wearing in different styles, too.

  28. I never know what to say to the hairdresser, either. Most of the time I just sit there quietly because it feels so good just to have someone touch my hair!

Your hair looks great! If only I had half that amount on my head!

    Have a wonderful Christmas!

  29. Your hair looks great. Wish my hair was thicker and would grow faster. Oh well.
I can't believe that lady. She needs a life.

  30. Love the hair sweetie!!!

I pretty much let my hairdresser use her scissors any way she wants as long as my hair passes the ponytail test. It's great just to throw it up for swimmin', boatin' or chasin' wild~eyed cattle.

Ya'll have a wonderfully blessed holiday season filled with love, laughter and fudge baby, heaps of rich delicious fudge!!!

  31. I don't have a problem conversing with my hairdresser, but I do with the person that waxes me. Maybe it's because she sees my dirty bits once a month?

I have had gray hair since I was SIX. Law school helped me grow more....and more....and more.

  32. Your hair looks great!

I always feel like I talk too much to the hairdresser. She probably wishes I would just shut up.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Beautiful! Just had my hair thinned out some today because it is super thick too. Don't you hate drying it? ugh. I used to wear mine long like that but now I keep it to my shoulders.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Your hair looks great, Amber! I hate having to make small talk with the hairdressers too. I haven't had time lately to read blogs, so I have lots of catching up to do here :)

  35. I love your long hair, it's so pretty! I'm not good at small talk either but I know my hairdresser well so I don't have to worry about it. Although I'd rather not talk at all while I'm getting my hair done so I can just focus on how good it feels to have someone play with my hair.

  36. Your hair is beautiful. I'm perfectly happy to buy a good product for my face or hair. Especially when the product makes me feel as though I've just had another salon visit. L'Oreal spoiled me with their tagline, "Because I'm worth it."

    ReplyDelete
  37. Love your HAIR!! Purdy! I am the same way with hairstylist... sales people... nail techs....anyone in general trying to make small talk. My mom on the other hand chats away no problem. They even end up telling her secrets. I just get uncomfortable. The last time I had my hair done I started rambling on about the reality hair shows and what the stylist thought of them. This however got me in a bind since I had only seen an episode of two. Honestly, I have no idea how my mom can chat with every stranger like they are best friends... I wish I had inherited that.

  38. Love your hair......Its gorgeous!
And its great seeing a picture of you (never seen a pic before). You are very young looking (like 20).
Don't feel bad, I'm the same exact way with talking to people. I always feel like I say the stupidest things. Ugh...LOL!
I'm prematurely gray too! It sucks!

  39. Your hair looks lovely! I used to love going to the hairdresser, but recenty, he's decided to try to teach me to read Japanese. I must have mentioned that I have trouble reading and he's really trying to be nice. But, as I spend most of my time avoiding my Japanese lessons, I'd rather just flick through magazines.

  40. Awesome hair! I cut my hair when I was in college up to my shoulders, and I'm still trying to grow it out. I got my Mom's cousin each time, so it's a more comfortable setting for conversation.

  41. Love the hair! I totally sympathize with the inheriting gray hair. I have 3 grandparents with those really awesome ice-blue Irish eyes- did I get those? No. However, the same grandparents started going gray at a very young age - I totally got that! I was probably the only 5 year old that knew how to use tweezers- to pluck the white hair that sprouted in my bangs when I was 3!!!!

Now at 32, I have so many that if I plucked, I'd be bald.

  42. Beautiful cut and bonus: no hair extensions necessary. Sure gonna save you tons of legal fees and wrangling with the salon.

  43. Your. Face. Is. Not. Puffy. That out of the way, I've got to say hi, sister. Didn't know we had the prematurely gray women who suck at chit-chat thing in common. Although at 46, I'm no longer young enough to use the term premature. (But I was.)

  44. You do have a butt-load of hair. I have similar ones coming out of my head, except yours appear to be well-behaved and personable.

And I've had white hairs since I was 20. I feel your hair pain.

  45. Just wait until you find grey hair somewhere else. I cried and cried when I did. Worst day of my life.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I have long hair too. And I love it. I would cry if I had to cut it off. Your hair looks great.
