Batgirl to Preschool

“I’ll dress myself today,” Natalie said, pushing away the dress I was attempting to put on her.

“Natalie, we don’t have time to argue if you want to get to preschool on time,” I replied.

Some mornings Natalie takes her time. For starters, she couldn’t decide what she wanted to breakfast, cereal or oatmeal. She eventually decided on cereal and then she couldn’t decide if she wanted Lucky Charms, cinnamon Cheerios, or Frosted Mini Wheats. She tapped her chin as she stared at the boxes.

“Please pick one,” I urged. I am not a morning person. I don’t think mornings are glorious at all. Mornings aren’t glorious until after 10.

“Lucky Charms,” Natalie eventually said.

I grabbed the box. “Don’t just eat the marshmallows, you hear me? When I have a bowl of Lucky Charms, I don’t just want the oat stuff.” Sometimes I feel like I’m a child stuck in an adult body. I still love cereal with marshmallows. Farts still crack me up. I get excited over the prospect of dessert.

I prepared Natalie’s cereal. I rarely make hot breakfasts. If I attempted to do so, shells would be stuck in the scrambled eggs since my eyes are only half opened in the morning. Pancakes would burn because I’d probably rest my head on the counter and fall asleep. It’s safer to stick to easy stuff.

Natalie ate painstakingly slow. She’d take one bite and chew. And chew. And chew.

So by the time it was time to get dressed, we only had 15 minutes to get ready.

“I want to dress myself,” Natalie repeated. This meant she’d probably go as a Disney princess.

“Just…okay,” I relented. I didn’t have time to argue. The teachers would understand if she showed up as Snow White. Or in an outfit that didn’t match.

“Okay!” Natalie said excitedly, running upstairs.

I expected her to show up in a dress.

Or pink sweatpants paired with an orange top.

Or an outfit like the ones Lady Gaga sports.

Instead, she appeared in front of me in this, which I could see Lady Gaga in, complete with the pink undies.

“Uh,” I said. “Wouldn’t you feel a draft in that? Our high today is in the 40s…maybe if we were in Florida..”

Natalie twirled around. “I’m Batman. My teachers will love this.”

I didn’t know what to say. I knew I had to tread delicately to prevent a tantrum.

“You look great,” I said slowly. “But that belongs to Tommy. He’d get upset if you took it to school without asking.”

Natalie mashed her lips together and scowled.

“You can wear that when you get home,” I promised.

I expected to hear a screech from Natalie. Instead she shrugged and went, “Okay. I’ll wear the dress then.”

???????

Sometimes I don’t get little girls.

  9. She has certainly learned how to mess with you - good luck when she's a teen!!! I love the pic - have a similar one of my daughter wearing her favorite undies and a balloon holster and sword.

  14. Classic. And I love the "My teachers will love this." I can guarantee they'd laugh, then be concerned about her home life. Ha! I guess the dress is the safe second choice.

  15. Ha that picture is adorable. She looks so pleased with her outfit of choice! hehe

  16. That is so funny. Definitely save that picture to embarrass her with when she's a teenager.

  17. OMG, I want a daughter just like her one day. Seriously hilarious. You might have to brace yourself for her upcoming stand-up comic tour when she becomes an adult!

  18. Tee, hee. Just don't let my Batman obsessed husband see her. It could get really uncomfortable.

  19. I love it! I have to fight with my girls to not wear pj's to school. But who could blame them, if I could wear my pj's to work I would.

  20. Adorable! I have the same fights with my little boy in the morning.

  21. OMG I LOVE HER!
She is the funniest girlie ever!
Every time I read your blog I wind up wanting a little girl so very bad!

    She is ADORABLE....Love the attitude!

  22. Just for the record, I STILL eat only the marshmallows from Lucky Charms- or at least, I did before I moved to Indonesia where Lucky Charms cost $15 a box.

I love every new phase of my daughter's life EXCEPT for the one in which she decided that she can pick out all of her own outfits from now on. I cringe on a daily basis, and am constantly embarrassed in public paces by the things she puts together! I've given up trying to talk her out of them, though- it's just easier to embrace it as "self-expression".

I have to say, though, that I am so very, very grateful that Kaia's school has a uniform, so at least we only go through this in the afternoons and on weekends.

Your daughter is a hysterical little girl!

  23. IT's amazing how quick they can get dressed when they want to....and bonus, they now add fiber to Lucky Charms. Yay colon health! haha!

  24. refreshing to see a BatGIRL as I am inundated with my little BatMANS, though my first grader announced yesterday that Batman was no longer "cool"...how quickly they outgrow these things...

  25. I resist the urge to say zomg she's so freaking cute constantly. Because you must get tired of hearing it. But zomg, she is so freaking cute!

  26. In some weird way, I really miss those days with my daughter. Now that she is almost 10 things tend to go pretty smooth in the morning.

Enjoy it! She is a cutie patootie.

  27. She's too funny! I guess it could have been worse!

  28. You crack me up! When it comes to picking my disagreements I have already decided clothes won't be one of them, but this would be a bit drafty.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm so not a morning person either. There were days when I was SO tired that I let my boys eat cupcakes!

    Oh Natalie!

She's gonna be a handful when she's older, but dang is she ever CUTE!

I would love to have seen her teacher's face if she had SWOOSHED into school in that get-up!

So glad you're "blogging" about these moments--your kids will LOVE them when they have kids of their own! Or at the very least, when they complain about their kids, you can say "SEE you DID it too! And here's the PROOF!"

  30. That little one just stole my heart. That was the best outfit ever. GaGa could totally steal that and pull it off.

Also...mornings were created by the Gods as punishment for those of us who refuse to relent and grow up. Seriously..the only time I want to be up at 5am is if I haven't been to bed yet.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Boy is she going to hate you when she is older for posting that picture for all to see. That being said, adorable!

    ReplyDelete
  32. When she gets older you can threaten to pull that picture out for her prom date. For the record my little girl is completely alien to me

  33. Funny. I have something similar in my closet. I, too, must decide if it's the best idea rag morning.

  38. Best not to question her rational, just smile and back away slowly!
But really, her coming out in that costume would have thrilled me: 1. Super cute! 2. Total blog fodder!

  39. Ahh, haha! I LOVE the batman costume. My son eats pain-painstakingly slow TOO! SOmetimes he carries his food with him and holds it in his hand all day long- yuck! Maybe our kids would be friends.
Thanks for stoppin' by today ;)

  40. She's adorable. Rockin the Batman costume!
And way to go, mom. Great response.
    That was quick, smart thinking.
It could have been a chilly ride, indeed, to preschool.
Love the whole Lucky Charms and costumes time in life. Even if you are half asleep, it's awesome.
    Thanks for sharing!

  42. Well, that went well! Plus, if she went to school in that outfit, she'd look like Catlady who's catting around!

    ReplyDelete
  43. She's an original. I love her sense of style. :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. That picture is absolutely freakin' adorable. Love that she included the mask and all, at least she's a girl who knows about accessories. But I'm with you, sometimes, I don't get little girls, either.

  45. She looks ADORABLE as Batman!!

Uggghhh, I feel your pain when it comes to treading lightly & never knowing what to expect from little girls!
