The Five Stages of Moving

Moving can be difficult.

You have to organize, pack, stare intently at the movers so they don’t try to steal your stuff....

Or mouth something like, “I have a blog. I also took a photo of you on my phone so if you try anything, I know who you are.”

I probably won’t do that when the movers come today.

But you know how there are 5 Stages of Grief? I also believe there are 5 Stages of Moving.

Denial: “It’s not going to happen. The military is going to say no.”

Anger: “Okay, so we really are moving. The movers better not steal my stuff. If they steal my stuff, I’m going to have a fit and throw the change from my purse at their heads.”

Bargaining: “Okay, if they have to steal something, let them steal Tom’s hideous jackets that he insists he’ll wear again someday.”

Depression: “What if when we get to Oklahoma, things are broken? And stolen. What if they steal our DVDs? They better not steal my seasons of Lost. If they steal my seasons of Lost, I'll cry.”

Acceptance: “Everything will be okay. The movers will be nice, friendly men who would never dream if taking something that doesn’t belong to them.”

  1. regardless of the 5 steps, i truly believe that moving is just one step closer to the pearly gates. It is one of the worse experiences EVER! Good Luck.

  2. Moving is one of the toughest job, which one can face in his entire lifetime. We all will go through it once or twice, eventually. It's best to be prepped for it, at least intellectually.

  4. But there's always the threat of blog exposure to keep them on the straight and narrow. Snap away with your camera, Lady.

  5. With all our military moves our stuff has been insured in case it's lost or broken. We've never had anything lost or stolen... But they do seem to break something everytime. You will be fine:)

  6. I have moved so many times in my life - and I wasn't even in the military! Best piece of advice - make sure you have a box or two WITH you of all things you may need that first night or two at the new place. Flashlights, TP, clothing, soap - ect. Best of luck with the move!

  7. Years ago, during our military life, we were moved from Germany and the movers DID steal very precious things from me. Once we arrived at our new base (we had been diverted) we discovered that the containers with our household items were clear across the country and the container had a leak. The military did cover some of the damage, but so much could not be replaced. I learned THEN to use as many plastic tubes, ziplock baggies, etc. as possible as a first line of packing...especially for the precious items. Since then, we've hired people via hand-picking and have done our own moving. But, when you are a military family, you have little choice ---- take pictures of everything in the rooms as you go along and if possible, take pictures of those packing, as they do it, so they'll know you'll be able to track down the workers who handled your personal items. I later found out that these are just a few of the actions that can help. I have faith that all will be well. Our movers were Germans who were already drunk before 8am and that should've been clue #1. haha.

  10. Moving, on a good day, is a horrible. I found drinking heavily puts it in perspective...

  12. Oooh, wishing you tons of luck! When we moved from Germany, I thought the German movers that the military sent us did a really great job - until I realized that before packing my jewelry box, they had dumped its entire contents into their own pockets. Grrr! Lucky for me, every single piece in there was cheap and fake. Hahahahaha, suckaz.

  14. Even with movers - moving sucks. Mine didn't steal stuff but certainly stole our cash - since there were "hidden" costs by the time we reached our destination.

    Good luck on your move!

  15. Moving is traumatic. And Lord knows, you've done enough of it. But you'll like OKC. (Or I like it anyway!)

  16. Good luck!

When we moved to Okinawa, we left on June 4th....the packers came to get our stuff June 14th. Yes, 10 days AFTER we left. Luckily my dad was there to watch the movers but it was SOOOO nerve-wracking. Plus, a chunk of our stuff got put into storage instead of sending to us (our choice) so I still am not 100% positive we have everything, and won't know for at least 2 years. sigh.

  17. You forgot the sixth stage: Crying. I've never moved without crying during the unpacking process because it's just so much damn work. Sucks. Bad.

  19. My girlfriend became a part of the Canadian RCMP (the dudes who wear red uniforms and ride horses) and she was transferred to a different province. Their rules are that they pack. It was pretty traumatizing.
