Here's A Question

I have an important question to ask.

*Takes a deep breath*

Do people really wear their sweaters like this?

(Photo is from the movie Hall Pass.)

But really.

Usually when people wear their sweaters in that fashion it means they are pompous brats.

At least that's how movies and television portrays people who wear sweaters like that.

Please tell me there are NICE people who tie their sweaters around their neck.

(Though I still don't completely get it. If I'm going to get cold later I sling a coat over my arm. Or put on the sweater to begin with.)

(But that's just me.)

  1. I knew some rich kids in college that did exactly that....with the brand logo still so cleverly on display. natch! but the strangest thing is...not matter how cold it became, they never seemed to actually wear said sweatshirt.

the rest of us would tie the bargain bin sweatshirt around our waist if we didn't want to carry it. and when we got cold, we put it on.

  2. In the 80s they did! And jean jackets, too! Now? If I saw someone walking around like that I'd kind of think they were a tool, hee.

  3. I knew guys in college that did. Girls too. I am happy to say I've never worn that look!

  4. I haven't seen someone wear their sweater like that in years! I am thankful I never did. Although I did tie it around my waist all the time :)

  5. I've not seen anyone wear 'em like that recently (say this decade) - and actually, I've not seen a guy wearing a sweater recently either...

  6. I'm with Mommy Lisa...lot of people did that in the 80's. But not me, of course!

  7. I don't normal people did that since the 80s.

  8. I never understood that look....it looks stupid!

  9. I wondered that same thing when I saw that movie last weekend. My MIL & her husband are 75 & 80 and both play tennis at least 4 times a week. They don't do the sweater thing, but they always wear polo shirts with their collars up. I'm not sure where they learned that was okay, but it is so weird. And my MIL is a teeny little Japenese lady, so it's doubly weird. If she was an older white woman, I might be able to accept it more!

  10. I know a few women in their 60's who are very sweet, but can't stop wearing them much like their acid washed jeans.

  11. Nope. Just pompous asses and homosexuals.

  12. I've only seen that done in 80's movies to signify the "richies/preps" a la James Spader in Pretty in Pink. Now when I was a kid, I used to tie my sweater/shirt around my waist all the time. Completely different thing, though. Both look pretty ridiculous anymore, though.

  13. Yeah, I have to agree with Ed....Just pompous asses and homosexuals. Sorry

  14. I don't know anyone that does it now other than little old ladies, but as someone said, it was the thing to do back in the preppy 80's. I'm guilty.

  15. I believe that style is referred to as "preppy."

However, I've not seen anyway in real life wear a sweater that way.

L.L. Bean catalogs and Scott from Keeping Up With the Kardashians are the only other places I see that.

  16. I've tried that a few times and I felt as dorky as that guy looks! :)

  17. I've tried to wear asweater that way before, thinking it might look better than tied around my butt. It doesn't sit there nicely. It falls off of your shoulders and tries to kill you with a strangle hold!

  18. Uh, duh, don'tcha know that anyone who is even remotely cool wears their sweater like this?! *gosh!*

Oh...wait...I think I'm wrong on that!

  19. Yes, pompous brats wear their sweaters like that!

  20. NO!!! Especially not that color and especially not on a DUDE. Jeezus.

  21. I knew some guys in college who did but they were jerks. and jerk is the nice word I had to think of to replace the first word that came to mind ;)

  22. Might as well wear a cape...I don't get the point...at all. The next time you see someone wearing a sweather that way, go up to them tie the arms together real tight, and cut off the oxygen for a minute.

  23. Lol! I don't think I have ever seen anyone IRL do that

  24. Oookay, I'm gonna stand out in the crowd here a bit. I sometimes will wear my sweater I have at work like that as I'm cold without it but too warm with it completely on. Otherwise I will just put my arms in it and not completely wear it.

  25. My BFF dated a guy she was in L-O-V-E with and when I saw the first picture of him, he had a sweater on like that and loafers, no socks. I labeled him a pompous ass from the pics and turns out I was right.

I have seen a few women wear this, but no men recently.

  26. I worked at the headquarters of Talbots for a summer in the late 1990s. ALL of the women wore their sweaters like that. I was told it was the Talbots "look" and it was suggested that I copy it. As they didn't even pay me enough to afford anything off a clearance rack in one of their stores, I politely declined. They then moved me off of the front desk to the copy room, which I was perfectly happy with because I could wear jeans and a T-shirt.

  27. That's funny! I was just going to say that it totally looks like something a Talbots employee would wear! haha
So, yes, you wear that if you love all things Talbots.

  28. I hope no one still wears sweaters like that...it is just depressing to know that folks might actually wear clothing that is capable of being wrapped around ones neck.
