She'll Never...

For starters, she cried on the very first day of class.

And then she latched herself onto my leg.

I tried to pry her fingers from around my knee but she has a strong grasp.

Her teacher had to coax her in and even then, Natalie sniffled unhappily.

For the next class Natalie reluctantly went in but danced to the beat of her own drum. She'd be off in the corner shaking her butt and the teacher would have to call her back to the class.

"Natalie," she'd say. "First position."

I watched Natalie through the window that is set up to observe the kids. She said, "I don't like the first position."

I sighed.

Natalie, my darling daughter, would never be a prima ballerina.

But that's fine. Look what went on with Natalie Portman in Black Swan.

The thing is, when Natalie (my Natalie, not Natalie Portman) does what she is told, she does it well. She'll do the first, second, third and fourth positions. She'll spin around the room. But then she'll be like, "I'm over the ballet moves. Time to boogie," and her butt will start wagging again.

Other kids do this too though. That makes me feel a little better. The class is for 3-5 year olds. And 3-5 year olds don't have the greatest attention span.

They are doing a recital for a retirement home in December.

I can only hope that Natalie doesn't try to shake her butt at the over 55 crowd.

  7. The over 55 crowd loves it when anyone shakes their butt at them.

I'm sure if Natalie does it everyone will be thrilled.

  9. I think butt-wiggling should totally be a part of ballet.
I was in dance when I was little and I was one of those butt-wigglers who get shoved to the side and in the back of the recital line-up. I grew up to be the same butt-wiggling adult. I think I'm better for it. :)

  11. I love when little kids do their own thing! Like when my boy wore his Hulk costume at his preschool Christmas program. Hey, the teacher told them to wear whatever they wanted...

  12. Ah, they'll probably think it's cute, since they're so young. If it was an older age group, they might shake their heads, but this age group, it's just *aw* how cute! I love it!!

  13. Nothing wrong with dancing to the beat of your own drummer, or unless that is what I have to tell myself with my own "free" spirits!! Great story!! Your natalie (not portman)stories always cracks me up!!

  14. Dont feel bad...I took my oldest to the same type of ballet class and she was asked to go out and sit with me after she refused to do anything they were doing. That was her last ballet class!

  15. She will shake her butt at the old folks. And they will love her for it. Have you ever watched a preschooler ballet recital? I think they're the cutest things ever.

  16. I'm sure the over 55 crew will love her boogie and her ballet!

  17. Some people just need to dance to their own rhythm. It'll be difficult at times (obviously) but will definitely pay off in the long run.

  18. I took lessons from the time I was 3 until 16 including toe shoes. At that point I was eleventy feet taller then my companions not even hiding in the back would make me less noticeable.

  19. We also learned that ballet is not as fun as gymnastics to this age group. I'm really surprised that they have 3 - 5 in ONE class. That's a HUGE range at these young ages. At least she gets to wear a tutu. I'm SURE that makes her happy!

  20. The old folks will LOVE it! My favorite part of the recital was ALWAYS the little ones...you just never knew what they'd pull!

  21. Awww, bless her sweet little tutu, she sounds a one girl charm offensive, she's gonna' just MELT those senior's hearts, you mark my words!

  22. Aww but it would be so cute if she boogied down at the recital! She's adorable.

  23. My middle son played soccer when he was 5. Got the ball on a fast break and took it 3/4 of the length of the field - then stuck both arms out like he was an airplane and soared off away from the ball - and the goal. We laughed and laughed.

Enjoy the recital. Sounds like a sweet time.

  24. LOL! The retirement people would think that was hysterical! :)
