Everything In My Car

She screamed.

I thought she was hurt so I rushed over. We were just about to leave for PreK and I thought, “Oh fun, instead of school, we get to go to the doctor.”

But, as I approached Natalie, she didn’t appear to be hurt. She was standing by the door gripping her Superman backpack and Snow White helmet. (She gets attached to weird things.)

“What?” I demanded.

She gave a big sigh. “My doggy wants to come too and I don’t have any free hands.”

Uh.

Really?

Are any other parents out there dealing with a kid who wants to take practically EVERY TOY THEY OWN whenever it’s time to leave the house?

Or is my kid just overly attached to things?

Should I save up for her therapy later? (I mean really, why take a HELMET?)

“That’s not an issue to scream about,” I reminded her. “I’ll carry the doggy out. Okay?”

I know I shouldn’t give in. But it seems like such a small thing. And okay, it keeps her quiet on the ten minute drive to her school. I prefer quiet. I hate when she’s whiney. Her complaints mixed with Oklahoma drivers who have seemed to forgotten how to operate a vehicle is not a nice mix.

So..

We got the toys she wanted and…

…yeah. Where is my kid?

And let me tell you, sometimes she forgets to bring the item she wailed about in the first place back in so it sits in my car forever. I once found Darth Vader shoved underneath the passenger seat. (Yup, she loves Darth. Again. I’m saving up for her therapy.)

Is anyone else’s vehicle covered in toys?

(And food?)

That might be a future blog post. What’s in YOUR car?

  1. My kids are all about bringing toys in the car. It is SO annoying.

  2. I'm ok with them taking the toys in the car it's the leaving them in the car ... for weeks on end that drives me up the wall!

  3. My 5 y/o daughter would like to bring every toy she owns when we leave the house, but we "try" to encourage her to choose only 2 at a time. Of course, those 2 get forgotten in the van and then 2 more come out. I could probably pull off the road, open the sliding door and have a "van sale". I'd make some cash, get rid of lots of odds n ends AND drive away with a van Geoffrey Giraffe didn't have motion sickness in.

  4. There is tons of food in my car. Mostly dry cereal but crackers and sucker sticks too.

  5. We have a BIG toy closet (which is awesome because we shove everything in there and just close the door! Voila!) but my car rivals the toy closet! I could probably fill one of those yard garbage bags (you know the big ones for leaves) full of toys just from the back seat! Hmmm....

  6. Let her bring them. One day , a day coming at you at break neck speed, she will have moved out and moved in with a crappy boyfriend and she won't ask for you extra pair of hands anymore. So carry the dog and truck and stickers out to the car for her now. Therapy is highly overrated anyway

  7. no telling what all is my car... but I can't blame little kids..

    LOVE the car seat cover!!!

  8. My kids would love to bring every toy they own, but I'm the mean mom who says no. Now the toys my 5 year old MUST bring to bed with him, that's a different story. I don't know how he has room on his pillow to sleep at night.

  9. No toys in my car yet, mostly just bulletins from church that get tossed in the back seat. In a few weeks though I'll have a car seat and then the fun begins!

  10. I could see this becoming a weekly post! We have a negotiation every time we leave to determine the number of toys they get to bring.

  11. I have no idea what all may possibly be currently residing in my car.

Dracen (8)used to be bad about always taking a buttload of toys, or whatever, with him everywhere we went and still tries it on occasion. I caught him packing a backpack full of miscellaneous stuff last week that he said he was going to carry on the bus for his field trip. That didn't happen!

  12. There are so many toys in my car right now I'm afraid to come to a sudden stop for fear it'll all coming forward in one momentous rumble and I may get buried in it. And we started the school year out with a clean car. I don't get it!

  13. You're a riot.

I was one of those moms you'd see carrying the superman backpack along with all the extras. Dumb!

  14. IF she wants the helmet - have her wear it...frees up a hand for the doggy! Problem solved. You're welcome.
Seriously, my kids weren't like that - they each had one favorite for car rides unless it was a long trip.

  15. Seems like your precious little princess could use a stuffed pet carrier!!! Heeeheheh!

When my Social Butterfly was young she'd get so many stuffed critters in bed with her that I'd loose her!!!

Social Butterfly was changin' her two year old in a public parkin' lot yesterday and the tot's screamin' to the top of his lungs...'Help Me...Help Me'!!!

That Natalie is a sweetheart girl!

God bless and have a wonderful weekend!!! :o)

  16. Dayne is still too small to demand toys on trips but I'm sure it's coming. He's happy with a teething ring, or his coat (he chews on it!).

  17. hmmm.... soccer ball, library books (from school, not the actual library), random fruit snacks, naked princess dolls, sippy's rotting with whatever was in them in November of 2009, a broken and tattered tissue box that still has tissues in it, hoodies (we have a collection) and I can't find my snow scraper which will be a problem in about 6 weeks.

  18. Yes everything we own is in the car, including but not limited to: binoculars, various cars and trucks, a gameboy and games, an orange ukulele, etc...
    Its pretty ridiculous.

  19. Mine bring a lot too and yes, they then forget it somewhere. Now I limit it to one item. I got sick of losing toys everywhere.

  20. I just had my car detailed a week and a half ago. It was DISGUSTING. Food, nasty, stale sippy cups with milk that had turned interesting shades of black/green, receipts, napkins, old school papers, and TONS of toys. It took forever to clean it out. Today, I was loading the kids up, and I glanced at the floor by their feet. The entire floor of the backseat is filled with toys again. Thankfully, no food/drinks or garbage. Still, it's annoying.

  21. My kids bring everything too. In fact they'll pack backpacks to overflowing to make sure they have everything they need to go to the corner store. So irritating.

  22. Um...my car is full of: clothes, shoes, books, and art supplies. By my child. Who is 23. I don't think they ever outgrow it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I wouldn't sweat it until you start finding beer bottles under your front seat...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Good news - my kid is almost 13 and we still take a disgusting amount of animals.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think the question is, what's NOT in my car? Up until a few days ago I had a dart board - with darts - in my backseat that was there for months!

And we are WAY past the toddler/small child age.

  26. yes, I could have a rummage sale out of my car & trunk with all the stuff the kids leave in there. Oh, that's a good idea! A mobile yard sale...

  27. My daughter is the same way! Always has to take at least 2 toys with her everywhere! Being the time of year here in NC, its cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon so my car is full of toys, jackets, fruit snack wrappers, and sippy cups! The joys of motherhood!

  28. Maggie goes through weird phases of having to bring some certain object with her to school. I learned a long time ago to just go with it because eventually she loses interest in the object of her affection. I did have to limit the number of items she brings though, or else ALL of her buddies would be taking up all the space in her backpack everyday!

  29. Our cars sound fairly similar. We call Elliott's toys his 'treasures' and sometimes I can barely see his head over them when he's ready to go to the car. I have to constantly prompt him to leave things home. . . .with certainly limited success.

  30. What's in your car? could be a whole other blog. That would be too funny and more than a little embarrassing I'm sure..

  31. Both of my kids bring tons of toys into the car and then forget to take them out. And yeah the car is covered in goldfish too.

  32. I've often said I could drop my car off in some poor third world country and feed everyone there for a year. My car is disgusting and I refuse to buy a new one until the last one is 18. Just 11 more years to go.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I just visited a friend's house last night and I swear the place had more toys than a toy store!

  34. Don't worry, it's super normal. Just think twice about it when she grabs the neighbor's dog and wants to leave with it, without telling them. Until then, these are the sweet times you car gets to be filled with a bunch of crap that you will get to haul in, until the next and the next, etc.,

    Sorry.

  35. Frog the toddler insists on taking her favourite zhu zhu pet everywhere, then last week she put it aside for my Shaun the Sheep doll. And the care bears.

Last night it took her three trips from her bed to mine, just to carry all the toys she had with her so she could cuddle up next to me. Somehow it seemed like a LOT of effort to get her and them all back into bed!

She has nothing on the things WonderMan leaves in my car though!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh yes, we were there at one time too! What once was toys is now...well, just crap. And it still sits in there FOREVER. Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  37. .... I think I'm doing it TO my daughter... I'M the one who brings a crap ton of toys... I should stop.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'd have no problem with any of it except the screaming. If you're screaming, you better be bleeding. We have so much crap in the car, but a good half is mine. Hers is random toys, books, wrappers, her karate belt (so I don't forget it) and lots of little crappy plastic things from the likes of Chuck E. Cheese. Mine is magazines, books, Diet Dr Pepper cans, work out clothes, expired coupons, a jacket or two, directions to people's houses I don't even know anymore, and a few Starbucks stirrers. I'm the worst slob in the family. And Mooch's bed has a good 50 stuffed animals on it.

  39. Oh yes. EVERY TIME we go ANYWHERE, she has to bring a toy to play with. And if we're going somewhere to play, and I'm trying to convince her that she doesn't NEED to bring anything, she HAS to bring something to play with in the car - even for a 2 minute drive. If I still insist that she can't, she goes the route of begging for a toy for her little sister to play with. . . I can't win!
