Things That Annoy Me Thursday: ASSuming

“I envy you for having no children at home. You get to relax and do nothing!” another mother once said when she found out that both my kids were in school full time.

I gave her a polite smile and said, “Well, I don’t only relax.”

I wasn’t sure if she believed me or not.

The thing is, yes, it is nice having the kids in school full time. But I don’t get to go home and do nothing or eat those bon bons that people assume stay-at-home-mothers consume. (Where did that even come from? Who buys bon bons? Eating Reeses Peanut Butter Cups would make more sense to me..)

Anyway.

I have set days that I do certain things. I go grocery shopping on Mondays. I run errands on other days. I clean different areas of the house. Even when I’m watching television I’m usually doing something. Clipping and organizing coupons, for one. With the kids at school, I can concentrate more on that. I try and make it my goal to save at least twenty bucks at the grocery store.

My point is, I’m not just “relaxing” when my kids are in school.

I’m being productive.

And enjoying Reeses Peanut Butter Cups in between it all.

  1. What are Bon Bons? Do they even still make them? I've been in the grocery store approximately 1.6 billion times and I have never once seen a Bon Bon.

    Amen to the Reeses.

  2. LOL, yeah, haven't ever seen a bon bon. Well maybe when I was a kid. Funny post and oh so true! Found you on SITS.

  3. NOOOO! your post has left me totally disillusioned, here I was vicariously sitting around at home relaxing and eating bon bons through you!

Whatever! does that woman spend all her time running after her kid(s) and only do everything else after they have gone to bed??

  4. Agreed! My husband will take my daughter out for an hour so I can "relax", but I end up cleaning because nobody is around to interrupt.

  5. you don't eat bon bons while watching tv and wearing kitten heels? i thought all moms with kids in school did that all day.

  6. Agree. Occasionally I get to "relax", but mostly I'm getting things DONE in peace and quiet. :-)

  7. Well, there go my dreams of being a stay at home woman. I totally thought I'd sit around being served all day.

    Dangit.

  8. I'm busier when my kids are in school, trying to write non-blog related things, volunteering at the school (PA CHAIR, OVER HERE) and also running the house. So yeah, not too many bon bons. Or, if bon bons, then eaten on the run.

  9. According to the Wikipedia definition Reese's PB cups could be classified as a Bon Bon, so you are eating them. (the term simply refers to any type of candy or small confection.)
But there are places that make them by name - this one seems particularly nice

  10. Exactly! Even while watching TV I'm usually doing something and during commercials you should see me run to get things done in that 2 minutes. I can be very productive in short spurts.

  11. I know EXACTLY where to find bon bons -- and, I'm not telling... I have no idea what it means to watch TV without doing something else. I think that's why I can watch some shows over and over, as if they were new! LOL I have always worked from home, so once the little darlings were off to school, I was busy at my desk. The rule for disturbing me was that they had to be bleeding profusely from a main artery... and, wait for Saturdays... worked like a charm... now, for a bon bon from my stash...

  12. My husband had the 2 younger ones out for lunch today - daddy and daughters date day, while the eldest is in school.
I didn't sit once in the 2 hours they were gone. Or eat any bon bons (of which I totally am familiar with being Canadian and thus parlez vousing the le language - ha). The laundry is folded AND put away, the toys are picked up, the pot roast is in the slow cooker and it is now 2pm and I am sitting eating my own lunch.
Relax. What is this thing "relax" you speak of? bwah.

  13. Yeah... I'm surprised at how busy I am!

  14. Oh please! I may not have little ones but I can tell you this - when I don't have other people to get under my feet or cater to, I am not relaxing - I'm busy getting things done!

  15. lord that is irritating! or it's like when people assume because I'm a stay at home mom (of two kids under the age of 4) that I have time to assemble 50000 FRG bags, or go to every fundraising event EVER!

  16. What even is a bonbon? I am definitely liking the Reeses a little too much lately, haha!
I don't think moms ever truly relax haha, but that's just my opinion :D

  17. People seem to forget there are household issues to deal with. Dishes, washing, dusting, vacuuming, bed making, tidying.

Other people must be so pissin lazy that they must have maids to do all of the mundane daily household chores.

  18. My hubs and I have been retired now for 4 years, the Dkids are grown and Grandkids visit often:)
When we tell people we are retired, we hear the same response, oh now you can relax, they also add and travel and see the sites. Like you even at our age we still have to keep house, do laundry, yardwork, grocery shop etc, and as far as traveling..If we couldnt afford it while we held jobs, how can we afford it now?!?!
Have heard of Bon-Bons..never had one, give me a bag of Mini Mound bars any day:)

  20. It really irritates me when people make assumptions (read here JUDGEMENTS!) about complete strangers. And so what if you were "just" relaxing?? Motherhood is the hardest job on the planet and who needs to relax more anyway???

If you don't pay my bills, you don't get a say. My husband pays my bills and even he has limited say so, lol!!!! Some people just need to shut up. Seriously.

  21. As long as you make sure you keep some time reing those peanut butter cups :-)

  22. I really dislike how other women just assume things about other women. Of course you won't be sitting around eating Bon Bons. That time when the children are in school is precious. I re-call the days when I did not work and was able to do shopping, cleaning and other things during that time.

  23. I also envy you for having no kids at home.. because I love being productive and my daughter doesn't let me get a lot done in the run of a day. On a day she's not home I feel like Wonder Woman, getting so much more done than usual. But my days home are numbered anyway.

  24. You ruined it for me. I totally thought I was going to get to stay home all day doing nothing but stuffing my face with bon bons and watching soap operas.

And I've only had bon bons a couple of times in my life but OMG they are delicious.
