Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Politics

So what did you all think about the presidential debates on Monday?

Fun, huh?

Whenever debates are on, I’m always ready for all the Facebook posts. And Tweets. Some people keep it light. But others are all, “Whoever votes for *insert Obama or Romney here* are idiots!”

That’s uncalled for.

If you follow me on Facebook, you know that I’m leaning towards Romney. Yes, he’s said some stupid things. But I feel he’ll be better for the military. Lots of people feel that I’m wrong to think this. That’s fine, but I disagree. Some people don’t like when you disagree and will keep ranting as if they think you’ll suddenly go, “You know what? You’re right!”

I won’t do that.

I have my views and I’m sticking to them.

I would never say someone was stupid for voting for Obama. It’s THEIR choice.

I’ve heard of friendships being ruined because of this election. I’m like ?? I’d never stop being friends with someone for their political choices.

Thankfully, the election is almost here.

Until then, the “hide” feature on Facebook will be coming in handy.

  1. I think the key is just respect. We live in an awesome country where we're free to believe and think what we want. I don't begrudge anyone that right. But if you're rude to me because we don't agree? Well that's not ok. That's not the kind of person I want to associate with. I will be SO happy when the election is over so we can all go back to just arguing about who the Bachelor should pick ;-)

  2. One thing I decided I would never do on the internet is discuss Vaccines, or Politics. It's a No WIN situation. lol
And yes, people can get very competitive and angry if someone feels differently than they do. I'll be glad when this election is over.

  3. I don't like to discuss politics on FB or my blog.

Everyone has the right to vote for whomever they want, be it Romney, Obama, or heck, Kermit the Frog.

Just get out and VOTE, people!

  4. That's the freedom of the internet, to say what you want and be flamed by hundreds of people who just want to argue.

  5. It is all about respect. Some of my closest friends and my husband even believe differently than me but we respect each other.

  7. Hey! I've been reading (lurking) on your blog for a long time but had to comment.
I have also had to hide a lot of Facebook statuses about the upcoming election. We definitely live in a world now in which people think that they have anonymity behind a screen and that gives them the right to sling their views all over the place and disrespect yours.
Let me close by saying how much I LOVE your blog. Your children are precious and you're very relatable and down to Earth.

  8. Being a former military family, I definitely understand the vote. My best-friend is from Spain, she tells me it is terrible that Americans become some personal in their feelings with politics because her home-town allows for coffee shop debates...no one avoids politics because it is a normal part of their discussions and they respect each other's viewpoint. I always remember that when trying to remind people that we most certainly should be able to discuss such things that impact our daily life, yet not use it to attack one another or to feel superior over another. In the end, we're all in this together. My bottom line is to hope the President does right by us citizens. Period.

  10. Everyone says stupid things sometimes. It doesn't define who they are. But, name calling is so far out of line. I'm leaning toward Romney, too, does this make me a racist as the media says, absolutely NOT. My issues for leaning the way I do is ,military, definitely military, and Romney knows business, and I think he has the know how to get this economy back on track. Can't wait until this is all over...

  11. I can't wait for it to be over also. I am mailing my absentee ballot today and then I am done with it all. I have several hardcore Republican friends and hardcore Democrat friends on FB. It is crazy to see the statuses and how they declare the winner of each debate. I am not a fan of either candidate, but I am going to vote for who I think will help the country the most.

  12. I try to make it a rule to never, ever discuss politics with friends especially on facebook. I voted yesterday (for Romney, btw) and changed my profile pic to one of me behind my little "I voted" sticker to remind everyone else to exercise their right to do the same...for whomever they wish.

And you are absolutely right. Ranting and raving to someone about your own political views is never, ever going to bring them over to the other side. Ever.

  13. My very wise 88 yr old mother taught us NEVER discuss politics or religion with your friends. We all have our own views on each and most of the time they will be different then your own. So let it go and move on.

  14. What I don't understand is why do people think it's okay to call someone you don't agree with politcally an idiot, but if your child or another child said that word for similar reasons, we would punish them or expect them to be punished? I'm so tired of the political debate on Facebook. It's one thing to say "I agree with x or y." Saying "you are an idiot for believing x or y," is completely out of line.

I also will be using my HIDE option generously!

  15. I am just ready to fast forward the next few weeks. I am so tired of people bickering.

  16. You're crazy! Haha yeah I totally agree with everything you're saying.

  17. It is my personal mantra to never EVER discuss politics or religion. You nailed it - you aren't going to change the other person's views/mind and they aren't going to change yours. So you might as well suck it up, agree to disagree and move on.

  18. I'm sick of all the screaming. It seems to have been bitter this year.
You are right...someone yelling about it certainly isn't going to change my mind.

  19. I have an American boss so the political discussions have even reached my office here in Belgium ...

  20. Oh the politics...so over the "discussions" that are really arguments.

My aunt's husband asked me who I was voting for and I promptly told them "I don't discuss politics with you!" It never goes well!
