Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Overpriced Plane Tickets

So we're going to Disney in June.

And I still haven't bought airline tickets.

Why?

I keep waiting to see if they'll drop in price.

They haven't.

If anything, they've gone UP.

I'm beginning to get frustrated. Some websites suggest waiting a month before travel before purchasing tickets but I worry if I do that, the tickets will go up FURTHER.

I've been to the different airline websites and no luck.

I want to fly Southwest since the baggage is free and my daughter feels the need to take a bunch of her Disney Princess dresses so she's going to have her own luggage. This means we'll have 2 bags and if I fly other airlines, that'll be like $50.

Plus, Southwest still serves tasty snacks.

But Southwest is not going down in price! Gah!

I don't think I'll find a good deal. I travel Saturday-Saturday and I imagine deals don't happen for weekend travel. So it looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and pay crazy prices.

Ahh well.

I'll hold off a couple more weeks. Maybe Southwest will surprise me.

  1. Even if they surprise you it will still be a bunch. Sorry, but I'm sure Princess Na will have a great time.

  2. Try the name your own price on priceline. I did this for the first time a couple weeks ago. I was trying to rent a car and it was $90/a day. I bid $50/ a day and saved like $250 bucks! It's worth a shot! :)

  5. Sucks!! I was going to suggest SouthWest, but obviously that isn't working well...

  6. We are going in June too! My FIL is paying for the trip though, and no one will talk to me about dates, so I don't care if we save money or not. Not my money!!

  7. Ugh, I hate playing that game where I don't just pull the trigger and I watch on certain days and sometimes get a great deal, and sometimes not! I hope it works out well for you. Sounds like an amazing trip.

  9. we did priceline negotiator and got each of our tickets a few hundred less than what Orbitz, etc were offering. I also signed up for Watchdog-- they send you email alerts when ticket prices go down. maybe those might help? good luck!!!

  11. We are going to FL next week and we are driving... not quite as long for us as for you, but the airline prices just weren't worth it. There is an airline that flies out of smaller airports and into Orlando/Sanford (which means no Disney bus... you'd need a ride)... Allegiant... two summers $60 round trip prices... you would have to pay for baggage, but it's almost worth it if they fly out of an airport near you.

  12. I'd book now. Summer, weekend departure, and Orlando? Its just going to go up.

  13. I don't get the whole "pay for baggage" thing. Natalie will have a seat, probably for not much less than yours, if less at all, why wouldn't she have a bag? You shouldn't have to pay extra for that.
I hope you find decent tickets, and that Natalie can take her princess dresses, a girl needs to have a princess dress for a trip to Disney!

  14. OMG! I read the title of your post and gave you a virtual high-5! I live 3000 miles from my family and cannot believe that the ticket to fly home in July is $600! Yeah right. See ya next year fam

  16. Open up an incognito window (if you're on Chrome) Those sites will register your IP address, and it will see you keep coming back to check prices, and they'll raise the prices. so if you go incognito, they wont be able to track you, and you'll see lower prices...I did this for our tickets to St.Louis last year.

  17. I've really been wanting to go to Disney World lately, and I added up the price for how much it would be. Doable, but I do really wish the airline prices would go down some. The last three times I went down there, my family drove our car all the way there.

I never want to have to sit through a two day car ride again!

  18. I agree with Brandie above, once your IP address is registered with them, you won't see as many deals. I did however receive an email from Southwest this morning with a 20% promo code off their "Wanna Get Away" rates. All travel must be complete by June 8 - I wasn't sure if that was applicable to you but if you want the code, just let me know. Also, sign up for their email deals - I've gotten some super deals for work travel that way. Good luck!

  19. I fly to Orlando to see my family all the time and I used to fly out of OKC on Saturdays once a month when my husband was in pilot training. Try searching for tickets on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, because prices tend to be a little lower if you make your purchase on those days. Also, I know you don't want to pay for bags, but if you sign up for an airlines credit card, there is often an incentive where you can check bags for free which I love. I buy my tickets a little over a month out, but most times sooner is better.

  21. Yes we just bought tickets to Chicago to go visit my family and is it crazy how much it costs. Are you going to Disneyland or World? If land you will be in my neck of the woods :)

  22. Call Southwest and tell them you are military...they will let you know if there is a cheaper option with them...We called them before and got a price that was $200 cheaper then what we could find online. :) It's worth a shot! Have fun at Disney!
