Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Driving and Cell Phones

I’ve complained about people who use their cell phones while driving before.

Unless it’s a Bluetooth or on speaker, you shouldn’t be messing with it while operating a vehicle.

But I see many people with their phone clamped against their cheek while driving with ONE HAND.

Sorry. That’s not cool. I don’t care how well you think you control the wheel with one hand. You are putting your life and MY life in danger.

Anyway, the point of this post is to say that the military base I’m at is cracking down on those who insist on yakking away while driving.

If you’re caught, you can’t drive on base for 7 days.

If you’re caught again, I believe you can’t drive for a YEAR!

There’s a big sign when you drive to the gate stating this. I cheered. Finally. I see many people on base gabbing into their phones, driving with one hand. Texting. It’s ridiculous. Pull over if you can’t wait. It’s not that difficult.

I seriously hope people are caught.

I’m sure if they are pulled over that they’ll be like, “I wasn’t on my phone!”

When Tom pulled people over for messing with their phones, he got that excuse a lot.

*Insert eye roll now*

So yes. Thank goodness for stricter rules!

  1. What really drives me crazy is when people ride a bike and use their phone. You can't see where you're going! Of course, as soon as they see any police, they put the phone away, so no one ever gets caught! Grrrr Drives me crackers, it does.
    I hope the crackdown works.

  2. It will be even more amazing to see them actually enforce the law...

  3. BRAVO!!! Seriously, it's ridiculous and dangerous. There is no call that is so important it can't wait the 10 minutes it will take to get to your next destination. Our society is just so "I want this and I want it now" and so focused on being "connected" every second of the day, it's like we can't just turn on the radio and drive anymore. People NEED to be talking to someone. GAH!!

  4. Yeah! Me too. I especially hated when my grown kids would come to dinner and be chatting or texting on their phones. Now I make them leave them all in a dish by the door until after supper. I am after all "The Mommy Police"

  5. It drives me nuts when people have their phone on speakerphone, and they're holding the phone up to their face. It's like "hellooooo? Just cause your phone isn't pressed up against your face doesn't mean it makes it better!

  8. It's illegal here now, but I still see idiots doing it.

  9. I have had to dodge far too many people with cell phones in their hands while driving! Grrr...
I talk on the phone, but I leave the phone in my lap and use the speaker phone.

  10. Ugh! This too is one of my biggest pet peeves! I live in MD and they aren't cracking down on it. I am amazed at how many people still do it.

  11. I wish they would enforce some of the laws out here. Like the loud noise ordinance and texting or talking on the phone while driving.

  12. It's actually still legal where I live now, which is surprising. It's illegal in Jersey where I came from, I believe. And I know my family there takes it seriously!

  13. My mother refuses to talk to my while I'm driving. After having a very minor accident a few months ago I made a deal with myself: I'll only talk while driving if my phone is on speaker. It's just not that serious. Andrea @ be-quoted.com visiting from SITS.

  16. I see this a lot here in Vegas. People who are STILL yapping on their phones while driving and not using Bluetooth or speakerphone. And no surprise, we have a crap ton of accidents daily. How many are attributed to cell phone use I don't know but my guess would be several. It's ridiculous. NO call is so important you can't put the phone down until you come to a stop. Just my two cents...

  17. A whole year? That will get them to put down their phones.
