We Sent The Kids To Bed On New Year's Eve

"Let's dance! Let's dance!" Natalie shrieked on New Year's Eve.

She was making me dance to Kids Bop songs. My ears were burning.

"Is it almost bedtime?" I said, checking the clock. I didn't care that it was New Year's Eve. My kids were going upstairs at 8. I needed some peace. Some families had marathon game nights. We were having a dance fest--until 8.

So we danced. And danced.

And then I made the kids take some pictures.

After these pictures I was like, "Okay, bedtime!" before Natalie started another song. I can only take children crooning songs that I don't even like at me for so long. (Seriously. One song was a One Direction song. Help. Me.)

"Aren't we supposed to stay up until midnight?" Natalie grumbled as I shooed her upstairs.

"You can. You can come down at 1130 if you're still up," I promised. Please let them be sleeping.

We didn't have any fancy foods or drinks. Tom and I aren't big drinkers so we popped open a bottle of sparkling grape juice and watched The Shawshank Redemption. I had never seen it and Tom was appalled. As we watched an episode of Family Guy where they spoofed it, Tom was like, "Awesome movie," and I had said, "I wouldn't know." This stunned him. So that's why we decided to watch on New Year's Eve. Some people party and get drunk. We stretch out on the couch, sip sparkling grape juice, and watch a Stephen King movie.

And it was good.

The movie, I mean. I really enjoyed it.

As promised, I went to see if the kids were awake at 1130. They were. Of course. So I let them come down but told Natalie, "I'm not dancing."

We did the countdown and then we had poppers, which freaked out Tommy:

He liked them, but he didn't. He wanted to know what they were made of.

Then we went right to bed and slept in until 930 the next day.

No special New Year's Day meal either. We had hot dogs. And deviled eggs. Black eyed peas scare my family.

Happy 2014!

  1. Well you know I love deviled eggs! And Shawshank is one of my favorites.
Scarlet had it in her mind that she had to stay up until midnight. She would not let herself sleep and she was getting delirious. Finally we had to lie! Cassidy carried her to bed and she fought it until he said, "You did it! You made it to midnight!" She smiled and fell right to sleep. (It was 10:30)

  3. True story, I got in trouble my freshman year of college (a private Christian school) because one of my dorm RA's found Shawshank Redemption in my VCR and we weren't permitted to have R rated movies on campus. Apparently my mortal soul was in danger. Glad they were there to help ;-)

  4. An excellent movie choice! I like to put it on every now and then when my hubby is getting to macho man - and watch him cry. Marriage is fun.

Ours made it to about 9:30 pm. I didn't bother checking close to midnight. They would still wake up same time in the morning. And we had real champagne for once and kids are just big buzz killers.

  6. I like how you sent the kids up to their room at their bedtime, but still let them celebrate at midnight. I'll have to remember that for when I have kids. It's fair to them, but still gives you and your husband some alone time for relaxation. Brilliant!
And I've never seen that movie. I'll have to check it out sometime soon! :)

  7. I wish my new year's eve could have been like yours. We weren't out partying, but I would have preferred to have been home in comfy pants. With children somewhere else. LOL

  14. Sounds like it was a very adventuresome New Years Eve.

I went to bed at 1140. Didn't care what they were doing in NYC. When you are my age, sleep is everything.

  15. I'd say your NYE celebration was just right... Spending time with your love while the kiddos are in bed. ;-) I hope 2014 is your best year yet!!! :-)

  16. My children ran outside in the cold to set off the fireworks I had bought for them. I was at work. :) Everyone slept the first day of the New Year away.

  17. I was in bed by 10:30, the kids stayed up to watch a movie and the husband was working. I woke up at midnight from the fireworks wished the kids a Happy New Year & sent them to bed. Got up at 5 to go fetch the man from work (other people like to party so when you own a pub you don't really have a choice). Happy New Year!

  18. All vegetables, in general, are scary. You really don't need one with an eye.

  20. We stayed up til 10 and watched last year's ball drop on youtube. The kids were ready for bed at that point. Our fun included eating junk food for dinner and have a pillow fight in the living room. We're wild and crazy, I tell ya!!
