Things That Annoy Me Thursday: When My Husband Acts Like He's Starving

I hate cooking.

With a passion.

Don't get me wrong: I love to eat. I just detest making what I eat. I'd prefer someone else to do it.

However, I stay at home. This means the cooking falls on me.

I'm also in charge because Tom really doesn't know how to cook. His idea of cooking is the following:

--grilling

--shoving a frozen pizza in the oven

--breakfast foods

I try to cook every night. He's not a fan of leftovers. If I'm being honest, neither am I. Hence why I cook almost every night.

But some days I'm like, "I'm in no mood to cook. It's find whatever you can for dinner tonight." I'm cool with this. I can make chicken nuggets for the kids. I settle for a sandwich or a TV dinner.

My husband is like this:

He seriously acts like he's never taken care of himself before. Open the cupboard. Find something. It's SIMPLE. But he's all, "There's nothing here. What'll I eat?"

He acts hopeless, which is amusing to me, because he'll gladly die for his country. But prepare his own meal? OH NOES.

"Make a quesadilla," I'll suggest.

Sometimes he relents with a huge sigh.

Other times he's like, "Not in the mood."

I'll mention sandwiches and he makes gagging noises.

"Well, I don't care what you eat. I'm not cooking tonight," I'll snap.

Sometimes he'll just munch on some chips. "This is my dinner," he'll say dramatically.

"Awesome. Cheddar and Sour Cream chips are delish," I'll answer sweetly.

It would be fabulous if we could afford a cook. But we cannot. So it is me.

And sometimes I need a night off.

Because cooking sucks.

  1. I like to cook, I enjoy it and it's mostly fun. But holy cow, why do they need to eat do often?? 3 meals a day plus snacks? 7 days a week??? Give a mom a break already, sheesh!

  2. I hate leftovers too...leftovers get sent to work with my husband (so I don't have to pack a lunch for him). I love to cook, but there are times I need a break too!

  3. Completely agree. Especially on nights when we get home late. I have no desire to make anything. The kids can have sandwiches or chicken nuggets or corn dogs or hot pockets- it's why I buy those things in bulk. And then I'll just pick at whatever. My husband looks at me like I'm out of my mind.

  4. I usually love to cook, but really four or five nights a weeks should be enough. A glass of wine with some cheese and crackers usually takes care of the other nights. Three meals a day is totally overrated.

  5. haha my husband does the same thing - he will throw out ideas of what he wants but when i say, ok, well cook it, he's like well no i dont feel like it....then I will b!tch about how i have to do everything and he's all like, well i used to be on my own but then you came and took care of me...oh give me a break and make your own supper

  6. I like cooking but not every single night!!! Thankfully my husband takes left-overs for lunch almost every day and the boys are all good for left-over night at least once a week. Really, for me the whole struggle is the planning - if I have a meal planned then I do a lot better. And, if I put it in the crock pot early in the day? Even better!!!

  7. I have been doing the cooking around here for 36 years and this post just cracked me up. Since the kids are gone I don't see a need to roll out a 3 course meal every blasted night, so every now and then I fix myself something simple and tell my husband to do the same. I think our husbands are related, mine gags at the thought of a sandwich, too. He's been getting better at foraging for sustenance but there are many dramatic sighs.

  8. That's how Des is. He acts like he's starving. In the time it takes to make him breakfast, he screams!
As for my husband, he does most of the cooking but he's never home in time for dinner. I'd love to have a hot meal on the table for him but he doesn't think to inform me of when he's coming home. It could be 5. It could be 9!
    One day.

  9. I honestly hate to cook, too. I compromise with my husband. I tell him, "I will cook 4 nights this week. One night, we go out. One night, its a fend for yourself kind of night. The last night will be pizza." It works. But he acts like your husband on the "fend for yourself" nights. He usually eats the kids' chicken nuggets.

  10. That's when we pull out the take out menus. I actually enjoy cooking the more I do it. And lucky for me, my hubs cooks too and we switch every other week.

  11. My sister likes to do take out a lot. She calls into restaurants, and has her husband pick up dinner on the way home. Not necessarily fast food stuff. She calls into places like her favorite mexican restaurant, they do take out. Red Robin does take out. Find out if your restaurants like Logan's Roadhouse? If they do takeout. If they do,you just call in your meal and then go pick it up and tada, theres dinner. THAT would make Tom happy at least. And you don't even have to do it for the kids. Maybe just for you and Tom.

  12. This made me laugh, especially the chips and "This is my dinner" announcement, because sometimes my boyfriend does the same thing. He cooks 99% of the time because I hate to cook, so I cut him a lot of slack. But he does seem to think that even if we haven't been to the grocery store in two weeks and the fridge is empty, that standing in the kitchen and asking what I want to eat is going to make it magically appear.

  13. My husband does that, too!! He will eat the same microwaveable gross ramen noodles day in and day out rather than learn to make himself a simple meal. AAAGGGHHHH. Drives me insane.

  14. This is SO my boyfriend. I don't mind cooking but he comes over before class, wants dinner because class is from 6-9, and I'm not ready to eat at 4:30. Not to mention I'm on an eating plan and that involves a lot more work than cooking up some mac & cheese with a hot dog. So I tell him to find something. Soup, I say, sandwich, I say, leftovers, I say...and it's just grumbles and if he doesn't want to make something (he's so NOT skilled in the kitchen) and I'm refusing - forget it. He won't eat and I've learned to just not be concerned about it lol. Grow up a little!

  16. Haha. Oh goodness, I sure am glad Nate knows how to (and does) cook!

  17. I hate cooking too, so I completely understand. Luckily for me, the boyfriend loves cooking. He gladly takes the responsibility to make food for me, and I, in return, usually bake something sweet for dessert. (I can't cook, but I love baking. Hm. )

And he's actually a very good cook too, so I love having him cook for me. But when he's not available, I'm perfectly happy to grab a sandwich. :)

  18. That was what my Dad is like. He wants a meat, starch, and vegetable supper every single day. He also traveled for work a lot when I was growing up and Mom and us kids always celebrated with popcorn and apples and stuff of that sort for dinner.
I'm glad Angel can cook. He doesn't have a very wide repertoire, but he can cook, and he will grill even in winter. I do the vast majority of the cooking because I am better at it and I really like my own cooking...but there's days when I'm like, nope, there will be no cooking today.
Also, we both really like leftovers, at least I make dishes that make good leftovers: chilis, stews, fried rice, etc. So then I make a lot and eat it for three days.

  19. Haha I agree. I only cook for me for now, but some days I am just too tired. And cooking is definitely a pain! I wish I liked it more. Some people post such awesome recipes, but I just want to finish cooking as quickly as possible.

  20. "shoving a frozen pizza in the oven" His idea of cooking sounds pretty legit if you ask me!
I actually LOVE leftovers! Sometimes better than the first time around!

  21. I lucked out here. My husband doesn't mind cooking as long as I tell him what to make. He also LOVES leftovers!

  22. I hate to cook too. On the nights the girls are with their dad, I'd happily eat chips

  24. I'm with you. I DESPISE cooking. Which, partly, explains why I married my hubby (he loves to cook). If it were left up to me it'd be cereal or popcorn every night!

  25. I actually like cooking, but I can cook whatever I like, so it's easier! Chips for dinner works for me, though, I mean, they are a major food group.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That's how my husband cooks, too. I am the queen of crockpot meals. If it can't be made in the crockpot it's chips for dinner ;) thankfully we do leftovers in our house but really only for lasagna or taco night.

  27. i can't stand cooking. i will happily make beauty products, but cook? forget it. i didn't inherit that gene fr my amazing italian ancestors. but i will eat!

  28. I have found I like cooking a lot more now that the kids are out of the house at school when I can start my prep stuff. I won't lie: the music loud and probably inappropriate, and wine is sometimes used.
But I don't let them know that. because then I would not get Friday movie/pizza night. and that would be bad.
However, if my husband wanted to grill every night, I would be completely happy with that too.

  29. Haha, it's the same in our house! I call the nights when I don't fee Ike cooking our FFY nights. Fend For Yourself. Lena doesn't mind though, she had Lucky Charms for breakfast. It's James who looks disgruntled that I'm not feeding him. Which, personally, doesn't make sense since he was single for 5 years before we started dating and I'm pretty sure he fed himself back then.

  30. LOL!!!

OMG, I totally get this. Sometimes I am the one who very dramatically flings open the cabinets, expecting dinner suggestions to appear from thin air. I can never find inspiration and I never know what I'm actually in the mood for either. I think it's partially because I love to eat and I don't want anything that's just meh.

Great post. I love that your husband eats his chips with a vengeance. LOL!!

  31. Since our children are grown we have gotten into a routine of only cooking on the weekend. My husband has lunch out almost daily so he likes to come home and make himself a salad....it works for me!

  32. I can't remember the last time we had leftovers. Everything always gets eaten right away here, even when I attempt to cook enough to have some left.

My husband cooks, and so does my 17 year old, so the three of us take turns. I'm good with sucking it up and eating the Hamburger Helper my husband makes or the strange combinations my son makes if it means I didn't have to cook it.

  35. I love to cook but I still get tired of doing it allll the time. And my husband used to cook for himself quite often. His first wife wasn't much of a cook and he was single for three years. But now he's suddenly mysteriously forgotten everything he ever knew and is totally helpless if I don't cook. "I haven't eaten allll dayyyy" Well why the hell not? You aren't handicapped! He even goes out and kills the animals for the meat! But heaven forbid he have to cook it.
Men. We spoil them, that's the problem.

  36. I learned to cook after I got married because I realized how much cheaper it was! I like to cook now, but I don't like feeling pressured to cook!

  37. Cooking is stressful for me. I'm thankful Mr. Sexy enjoys it and I think he even finds it relaxing! He also tends to clean the kitchen while he cooks which helps me relax too!

  38. I like having nights like that too. My husband can cook but during the work week he doesn't like to do it. So on a night like that, he does get annoyed if I am not going to make anything.

  39. I love to cook, but cooking for one just isn't much fun. You ALWAYS have leftovers. boring leftovers....sigh...

  40. Aw!!! Thats too bad!!! I am the complete opposite, I LOVE to cook!!!! I read cookbooks like novels. I even have a cooking blog, though sadly neglected because I'm a horrible photographer. Check it out, maybe you'll find something interesting to make :)

  41. THIS. My Fiance thankfully likes leftovers for the most part, but my God can he put it away! I tend to overcook so I can pick and choose when I cook vs. eat leftovers, but sometimes he'll eat EVERYTHING and I HAVE to cook. Then when I cook so we have enough of leftovers he gets overwhelmed with how much I made. Some days I just dont feel like eating, but heaven forbid I leave him to his own devices!!

Sadly, I think conflict over meals is just part of cohabitation with someone who grew up in a different household, or spending so much time with only one other person.
