Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Whining About Spoilers

Look, I try not to post spoilers on social media.

I get that not everyone can watch a television show live.

Sometimes I don't get to watch a show live. This is due to the fact that I have noisy kids who will not go to sleep or a husband who is like, "This show is lame. I'm not watching it."

If I cannot watch a show live and don't want it spoiled, it's common sense for me NOT to go online. I understand people will want to discuss it. Heck, I have many people on Twitter who live tweet during a show.

But there are some who are like, "The people who spoil shows suck!"

And most of the time I'll go, "Then maybe stay offline?"

I'm called snarky or rude for saying so and feel like doing this:

I try not to post spoilers. For instance, when we watched that insane Walking Dead episode with Lizzie, I posted:

I think I'd be more afraid of Lizzie than the walkers at this point...

I try to stay vague. Yet I still get comments like, "No spoilers please!"

It's MY PAGE. I'll post what I want, thanks.

I don't say that. I think it.

But sometimes people want to talk about the show. So someone will comment on my post with a spoiler and that upsets others. They'll go, "ACK, STOP, I haven't seen it yet!"

THEN STAY THE EFF OFFLINE!

Why aren't people understanding this? Why? And why do I look like the bad guy when I suggest that they stay offline? I'm sorry if I get passionate about a silly TV show. I've said it many times on here: I WATCH A LOT OF TV.

So please. Don't go on social media and complain about those who spoil shows.

Just. Stay. Offline.

  1. LOL I'm so impatient that I look for spoilers or beg people to tell me what happens because I can't wait lol

But I agree. My page I'll talk about whatever the eff I want!

  2. But I can't stay offline. Just as addicting as it is for you to post your thoughts about the show...it's just as addicting for me to read your tweets about it! Hahah. It's because you are so vague, my anticipation builds up and I am the most impatient person ever and can't stand that I have to wait for the show to air live before we can download it to iTunes. No worries...I don't really even mind your tweets...it's not your fault we don't want to pay for cable. :)

  3. I have a couple of shows I like to watch but have never gotten upset about "spoiler alerts." I still want to see for myself and don't feel that it ruined the experience for me.

  4. ha! I know. It's so hard. And some people don't watch TV in a timely manner. They're the rude ones, if you ask me.

  7. I usually don't get too pissy about spoilers, I try to avoid it when I know people watch the same show as me but staying off the internet until I have time to catch up on my fave tv shows is not really fair at all. I think its great to be vague and maybe say your opinion but flat out saying "this person died" without any kind of spoiler alert sucks.

  9. I agree- if you don't like spoilers stay offline. I personally love spoilers. I'm weird.

  11. I'm one of those people that hate spoilers. I used to work evening shifts at my job, so I'd have to watch shows like Big Brother on YouTube after work, but the only way to pass the times some nights at work is by browsing Facebook/the internet so it really sucks when people post play-by-plays of my favorite shows on those particular nights. Instead, I started hiding them from my newsfeed. Haven't seen a Big Brother status in a long time :p

  12. Hahaha I totally agree! I stay offline when I know people will be talking about a show I haven't seen yet. It's just common sense. RE: Walking Dead, I posted that if any told me to "Just look at the flowers" I'd start running! That episode WAS insane- how could anyone NOT talk about it if they watch it?!

  13. That was one of the most traumatizing episodes ever!

  14. i don't think I can get upset over the spoilers if I haven't made the time to watch the show when its on the first time. If you want to post spoilers, have at it! I don't get snarky.

  15. I don't watch tv so people can post all the spoilers they want. I have no idea what they are talking about. :) I know my husband and kids are bummed when they taped a game to watch later, and then hear the score beforehand...but they could have stayed offline!

  16. We don't watch live TV. We pay extra every month for a DVR and we darn well use it. It's a know fact though that on Sunday nights we avoid any and all social media. We can wait the half hour not to ruin The Walking Dead for ourselves.

  17. I totally understand that. Totally. And I am one of those people who never (if I can help it) watches live tv. I purposely don't watch shows live, because what am I, an animal?? I like to fast forward the commercials. :)

  18. I think that some people are just happier when they can complain about something. I learned way back (when we got DVR) to stay off FB and sometimes the radio until I was able to catch up on certain shows - I'm a big girl and it only took once of having the show ruined.
I know people who even record sports and then if you dare mention a certain game - watch out!!

  19. I don't watch TV in a "timely" manner because I refuse to pay a ridiculous amount of money for cable. I pay for the shows I want and nothing else, because I'd rather not support 47 ESPNs I'm never going to watch. That said, spoilers only bother me when they're done on purpose. By that I mean the following exchange I had on FB when American Horror Story was on. Friend tags me in a status: Vanessa, have you seen last night's episode? Me: Not yet. I don't know, the last few episodes were a little boring. Random, other person: I loved it! I'm so glad x died!

    WTF. No seriously. WTF?

  20. I personally like the spoiler alerts....for shows like American Idol and The Voice so than I don't have to watch the whole show!

  21. I kinda get when people don't want the live tweets... but in a way, it's like whatever - not your fault you can watch it and they can't. Some people get pissed even after a couple weeks though. GIVE ME A BREAK! Oh, I spoiled the end of Cinderella for you? Fuck yourself dudes!

  22. Completely agree.

It's like football scores, if you don't want to know what's happening don't watch tv, listen to the news on the radio or check it online.

    Geez, people, get a clue!

  23. I never watch anything live, on account of living in the wrong country, so I don't mind spoilers. It just makes me more impatient to see the show! Some people just like to complain while living in their own bubble of self-imortance!

  24. I need spoilers. When we watch movies, I wikipedia the entire plot before we watch it. So bad, huh? lol. After moving to the east coast from the west coast, I forgot we get our shows 3 hours earlier here, and the first month we were here, I posted some spoilers on tv shows....my friends on the west coast were pissed! oops.

  25. Totally agree, stay offline. I stay offline, for sure. Remember the days before social media and you had to like stay off the TV and radio to avoid spoilers? That was so me.

  26. Did we just become best friends?

I'm a huge TV lover but Walking Dead especially floats my boat. Look at the flowers, Lizzy.

I feel the same way. If you don't want a spoiler, stay off line. I had to do it last week. But I can't stand when people say, "Stop the spoilers!" How about stop being online where information is live and in real time. Especially on twitter!

  27. i don't like it when ppl post spoilers just to get a rise out of people or to be jerks about it. i try to keep it vague if i'm live-tweeting.
i think it's impossible to avoid spoilers--i'll skip social media the night of, but sure enough the next day, the spoiler is still trending on twitter. since my job of blogging sorta needs the internet to make it happen, it's kind of hard to turn off.

  28. I don't enjoy TV so I can't really speak on spoilers from that perspective, but from any other perspective spoilers don't bother me because for me the entertainment doesn't come from knowing or not knowing what happens, but from feeling my emotions or experiencing my reaction when I read or see it with my own eyes. Also, most of the time I'm pretty good at reading between the lines and figuring out what comes next so it's rare that someone tells me something that I haven't already gathered myself.

  29. I posted a vague Daryl image on my Instagram once and people started unfollowing me!
like whoa - it's just a picture of him talking to another character - no dialogue or action was given away when I posted it: just the image.

I know now what accounts to avoid if I don't want spoilers.
A warning about Lizzie might have been nice in hindsight.

  30. There are a couple of shows that I really like, so I liked their Facebook pages. Then I realized that they post stuff the day after that contains lots of spoilers. Know what I did? I unliked the pages so I wouldn't see it!! Personal responsibility, people!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. If I won't have a chance to watch a show right away, I'll do my best to avoid spoilers. I wish people would just post stuff on their own page instead of mine though!
