Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Setting Up A Domain

I've been talking about it for months.

And then I decided to just do it.

After watching multiple tutorials and reading many blog posts, I knew what I had to do.

At least I thought I did.

See, I decided to set my blog up with its own domain.

I did everything the tutorials and blog posts said--but it wasn't working.

It reminded me why I don't do blog stuff. I paid someone to design my blog because HTML makes me cry. I know the basics--but if you get into complicated codes and stuff, I don't follow.

"Why won't you work?" I screeched, frightening both the cat and my daughter, who calmly told me, "You're yelling at nothing." (My daughter. Not the cat. We aren't in a Dr. Seuss book.)

I knew I was being ridiculous--but COME ON, I followed the instructions!

"I followed the instructions!" I boomed.

Natalie rushed over and handed me a Hershey's Kiss. She's known me long enough to understand that chocolate helps.

I stuck the chocolate in my mouth and scowled at my screen. I tried Blogger again to see if they were able to establish that yes, I did purchase my domain. No luck. Error again.

I bought my domain through Namecheap, and I have to say, I was impressed with their customer service. I had lamented my problem on Twitter, and they got right back to me. I did a Live Chat and was promptly connected with someone named Vladimir, who said I did everything right. (I pictured the show The Americans as soon as I saw his name.)

"WHAT THE CRAP?" I shrieked.

To complicate things, Blogger gave me different CNAMES to input into my Namecheap account. It gave me two CNAMES at first and then when I got error messages, it gave me new CNAMES that were different from those codes. So which codes do I use? Should I try the news ones? I am so utterly lost. I almost want to go back to the day when I had no idea what CNAMES even WERE. I hate CNAMES! They can kiss my ass.

Apparently it might take up to 48 hours for everything to work. Or the problem might be on Google's side. *Sighs* So hopefully I'll have a regular .com blog soon.

In the meantime, I'll be snacking on chocolate....

  1. The technical stuff frustrates me too. I went through the whole process of fixing my no-reply blogger status, only to find out that Google randomly changes you back with no warning. So I am a no-reply blogger for blogger sites. Whenever I see those how-to posts on how to fix it, I just get frustrated because no one ever mentions that you have to fix it periodically, and monitor it yourself since they don't give you notice as to when you've been switched back. There's my soap box rant. I hope you get it figured out soon!

  2. This is part of the reason I haven't made the switch. I deal with enough of this stuff at work to be dealing with it on my personal time.

  3. Smart girl, Natalie.
I am impressed that you are doing this. When I went to self-hosted WP, I hired it out. Couldn't handle it!

  4. I have no clue what a CNAME is and I will probably just keep it that way!! Glad that Natalie knows you so well!!!

I'm not sure how I managed to get mine to switch over so seamlessly, but I tried helping a friend to no avail.

  9. Augh! How frustrating! I remember when I got my domain name. It took FOREVER to set it up on my own.

  10. ACK! I got your plea for help, but I wasn't able to look at it today. If you don't get it figured out by tomorrow, I'll take a look. I'm not the best at it when it's not right in front of me,but maybe I can help out.

  12. I'm soooo irritated with Google/Blogger that I've contemplated switching to WordPress. But if I do, I'm not even going to bother trying to transition everything; I'm just going to leave a post saying "I'm over here now" because I'm THAT terrified of code, etc.

  13. Oh my, awful! My husband is a Programmer so he handles all of this stuff for me. Good luck!

P.S. You know what goes good with chocolate? WINE. :)

  14. I remember setting up my domain like it was yesterday. IT WAS TURRIBLE! Honestly... it's all a blur - I don't know how I ended up actually getting it to work in the end!

  16. Oh, good luck with this! I moved to wordpress self-hosted in the very start of my blog. I still can't figure out how to install a new commenting system without losing my current comments ;) ha, ha.

  17. Ugh, I've been thinking about doing it also, but now I'm not so sure.

  18. Yep, know the feeling.

It's funny, if you bought it through GoDaddy it would have worked fine, but the minute you use another site to buy from, it's nothing but trouble.

  19. Ooh!That reminded me of last year. I was trying to have some music in my blogs that i could manage the volume so it does n't scare everyone who enters. That took a lot of time!!
    Good luck

  25. YAY FOR YOUR DOMAIN NAME! It works it works it works! And chocolate does fix everything, or at least gets you through the static until things come back on.

  26. Oh god. This sounds like a pain! Actually mine wasn't too painful...surprisingly. I'm totally blonde to the root, so yeah, surprisingly. Just stalking through your old blogs! You're really funny lady!
