Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Homework!

Back to school means back to homework.

It's....not fun.

Tommy is pretty good about doing his stuff. Sometimes. There will be days where I'll dig through his backpack and find a worksheet at the bottom of his bag. "Do you have to do this?" I'll ask and he'll be like, "Maybe..." MAYBE?!

Natalie tends to get distracted when she does her homework. She'll play with her pencil. Roll around. Make random comments like, "Pigeons are funny looking."

She'll have homework Monday-Thursday in second grade. It's slightly more than first grade where she had homework Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

Here's her work now:

I know I could be like, "Do it. If you don't, you'll lose recess because you'll have to do it while your friends are out playing."

But I can't!

Maybe because I'm one of those people who like to follow the rules. I feel weird and sweaty if I don't. I turned in all my homework in school.

So I sit with Natalie and remind her to just finish her homework and then she'll be done.

"This is just so boring!" she'll yell dramatically. "I just don't like these words."

Oh man. It's going to be a long school year.

  1. Homework is the worst. Seriously. You can't blame kids for hating it.

  6. I'm a teacher and before I had kids I would give a lot of homework. Now that my oldest is in school I realize how annoying it is and I cut back a ton.

  8. I don't remember having a ton of homework when I was in school. It seems like they have so much more now.

  9. I hate dealing with homework too. The kids will save it to the last minute and then get all upset with us.

  10. I don't even know when homework starts. Does it start in kindergarten??
I was like you - I'd break out in a cold sweat if I didn't do everything punctually.

  11. Yes to all of this. I feel lucky that my sixth grader does her own homework but my first grader...she's horrible about sitting still and just doing it so it is done.

  13. I'm sad all the time about my kids getting older - except when it comes to homework. SO glad I don't have to do that anymore. Hang in there!

  14. When we went to KINDERGARTEN orientation, they showed us Dannika's "homework folder". I was like, "what?!?" I don't remember homework in Kindergarten....

  15. I remember Mateo having homework in Kindergarten and first grade, then we changed schools and he didn't have homework in second grade at all. Then we moved to Croatia and he has homework every.single.day. He is good about doing till close to Christmas break... then he usually stops doing it and tries to tell me he has no homework.

  17. I am always checking with my 6th grader on his homework. He had a hard time last year when he lived with his birth mom. He never did any homework and he failed. So he is repeating the grad with us and trust me I watch him like a hawk. He will do good and get through this year without any issues. It sounds like it will be a long long year for you. Maybe she will eventually know the homework is something she has to do and it becomes routine and less fights on your hands. Good luck!

  18. My youngest son used to be the same way - he would drag out a simple thing (like writing spelling words) into way over an hour. Finally I turned it into a game and told him I didn't think he could do it in a certain amount of time - then I would set the timer and he always finished it before the time ran out!!!
    Good luck!

  19. I used to LOVE homework in 1st and 2nd grade. wait, maybe it started getting boring around 2nd grade. Even so- I did my HW first - before anything! I cracked up about her pigeon comment.

  20. wow, our kids must read from the same playbook because kayla says that ALL THE TIME.

  21. I have tried motivating my kids every which way. I agree w Kim, the timer has definitely worked. Most times I let my son take mini breaks. If he is really being obstinate, I let him know I will write a note letting the teacher know of his difficulty to complete the assignment. That always works. But I am up front w the teacher. I feel he needs to get the consequence from her, not me.

  22. I haaaaated homework in school. I literally didn't turn in over 20 assignments in my senior math class. Luckily, my teacher took pity on me and let me turn them in at the end of the year for full credit still. I HATE MATH.

  23. I am in for so much trouble when my son goes to school. If I don't see the point of a homework lesson (seriously, what is Natalie supposed to learn from this?), I probably won't make my son do the homework. I don't remember having more than an occasional, rare homework assignment until 5th grade. Even then, I only had homework assignments on 3 days a week and I negotiated with the teacher about turning in homework a day late because his homework days conflicted with dance practice. :)

  24. I so get it -- I always did my homework. I would come home and get it done straight away so that I could go out later.
my kids are the complete opposite and it drives me nuts!! I had to give up pestering them and just lay down the rule - you don't get to go anywhere if homework is not done. and if the teacher gives you detention: you'll just have to suffer the consequences.
    Made school nights much easier.

  25. This is why I would have sucked at going to real school--homework. When I've visited relatives I help my cousins with their homework and that's torture enough.
