Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Going Without My Phone

So my iPhone 5 was eligible to receive a free battery replacement as part of Apple's battery program.

I brought it in last week and was told there weren't any batteries left but that they'd order me one.

I was a bit miffed.

If Apple knows they are doing a battery program, why don't they order a ton? I didn't want to come back. The Apple Store isn't exactly a convenient place to get to.

It turns out that Apple had actually sent me an e-mail the night before stating that they were out of batteries. But it went to my Spam folder, so I didn't see it. Gah!

A few days later I received an e-mail stating that my battery was in. Huzzah! Back to The Apple Store. I was hoping they'd happily take my phone, exchange my battery, and I'd be on my way within twenty minutes.

Ha.

No, I was told it would be an hour, which isn't horrible, but dang it, my phone is a piece of me.

"We can go eat," Tom suggested.

"But my phone!" I was aghast. He wanted me to just leave my phone with a stranger?

"We'll come back in an hour. Say goodbye. Let's go." Tom doesn't understand. He doesn't use his phone much.

So I allowed the worker to take it and swallowed back the urge to say, "Please take care of it."

Meanwhile, Tom was looking at me like this:

"Let's go eat," Tom said, and dragged me out.

Look, I don't have to be on my phone all the time. I NEVER mess with it while driving. I don't fiddle with it when I'm out to lunch with a friend. I won't turn it on while in a movie theater like so many rude people do. But I'm just used to being able to touch it whenever I'd like.

Since Tom was driving, I would normally mess around with my phone. But I couldn't.

"Could I post a Facebook status from your phone?" I asked.

"What? Why? No," Tom answered.

"But people might get concerned if they haven't heard from me in a few hours."

"They'll get over it."

At lunch I sighed and said, "I can't even take a picture of my plate."

"Darn," Tom replied. "Who wants to see what people are eating anyway?"

"Lots of people! I love to see what people are eating."

"That's ridiculous. I don't get half this online stuff."

Ugh, I missed my phone. And I was worried I'd lose everything, because Apple had to wipe everything clean in order to switch the battery. I thought I had backed it up. Right? On the iCloud thing that I still don't understand?

My phone was ready when we returned to The Apple Store. They had it covered in bubble wrap so they did treat it with care. And now my phone is back to normal, but with a battery that doesn't drain within an hour.

("Maybe another reason your battery drained so fast was because you keep messing with your phone," Tom suggested dryly.)

The iCloud did do its proper thing, and everything is back on my phone.

I'm happy to have it back.

  1. I can relate that, and I feel somewhat similar about my laptop... which is funny because I got it last November and it's still under warranty but the sound started coming out sort of cracked when I listen to music... I should take it in but, but, but...

  4. I don't like to leave the house without it either. Back in the day, when we didn't have iPhones, my cell phone died and I felt totally lost without it! I had a landline, but still...
In any case, there's one day every week that I go without technology and it's a nice break. While there are some moments I wish I could photograph and post on FB, it's nice to just be in the moment too. Soon it will be 3 days in a row for me on certain weeks with the holidays coming up. So an hour really isn't so awful in the grand scheme of things. :)

  7. I'm glad you mentioned the battery replacement program. My husband has a 4s and it cannot keep its charge for more than an hour.

I like the freedom that comes from not having my phone sometimes. It's probably as close as I can get to being invisible.

  18. You are definitely addicted to it if you can't be without it for an hour, lol.

I've still got the 4s and while I get the whole social media thing, I generally don't use it. I never remember to take pics for Instagram, am too busy doing real stuff, like eating or watching tv and most people don't need to know about that stuff on a daily basis.

  19. Laughing. My husband so doesn't get social media. I am always explaining. :)
