What Happens When You Have A Spirited Daughter

My daughter Natalie has always been...spirited. (And sometimes she's just downright being a brat. I'll admit it.)

What happens when you have a spirited daughter?

Let me tell you.

--She'll probably wear too much perfume.

I bought her a small bottle at The Children's Place and she squeezes it all over her body. To the point where you can barely breathe. I explain that she only needs a little bit and she's all, "But it smells good!" Sometimes you need an air mask to sit near her.

--She'll use words against you.

I told her she could NOT cut Barbie's hair. She immediately exploded with, "The WHOLE WORLD gets to cut their Barbie's hair except me!" Then there was silence. Why?

"You said not to cut my Barbie's hair. This is a PONY!"

--She'll have the best imagination. She'll claim that Santa will be giving her REAL ice powers for Christmas.

You have to hope she'll forget to avoid an explosive meltdown.

--Dramatic things will come out of her mouth.

For example: "You're BUGGING my life," "You always say no to me. It's RUDE", and see above with the whole Barbie hair comment thing.

You'll probably laugh. This will insult her. She'll probably shout, "It's NOT FUNNY. I'm not TRYING TO BE FUNNY!"

--She probably cried a lot as a baby.

Nothing made Natalie happy at times. So basically there was a lot of walking around with a screeching baby. I never knew a baby could be THAT LOUD. Natalie informs me now, "It's because you weren't taking proper care of me." Um?

--She'll want to accessorize before leaving the house.

Like this.

--She'll be a daredevil.

This means she'll probably end up in the ER. (Natalie has been there three times.) She wants to do what everyone else is doing. Natalie was determined to be able to go in the deep end of the pool, like the big kids. So she learned how to swim well, and now she's one of the smallest kids hanging in the deep end.

And climbing the wall.

Have a spirited child can wear on a person. It's tough. But it's also leads to some amusing moments.

Life is never dull.

But I admit, I'm a little nervous on how the teenage years are going to go.

  1. at least you are getting a little practice at it before the teen years hit? or maybe they will be the opposite!

  2. It sounds like she's a real go-getter, though, too, which will serve her well later in life! :)

  3. My daughter is similar to your, except that we haven't been to the ER yet with her. But falling out of the crib because she saw a kitten, trying to murder her father by dropping an iron inches away from his head, or spilling hot coffee all over him... yeah. Also got some similar comments too!

  5. I've already learned that when I say 'No' i have to include many things under the category - or we would have pony situations all the time! Haha I laughed so hard! I love the snow powers wish - santa is going to have to work extra hard on that one!

  6. I love it - I think that Natalie helps keep life interesting!!! And spirited kids turn into amazing young people!!!

  7. She is my dream daughter! And I love the word "spirited" to describe her.

  8. Spirited is a great word! The world is not nearly as interesting without fun people like Natalie in it! :)-The Dose Girls

  9. I have a teenager spirited child. She's still like a lawyer to talk to and makes fun of popular girls. She is the goalie for the 8th grade field hockey team. Love her!

  10. LOL I imagine I was a spirited child as well. A lot of these things sound very similar, minus being in ER, being a screeching baby, or cutting Barbie/My Little Pony's hair. No, I went a step further and decided to cut my own bangs when my mom was in the shower when I was 6. Needless to say, she was not pleased!

  11. Oh my goodness I'm laughing hysterically! What a girl, she's feisty!

  14. Gosh. You know I have a spirited daughter and reading Natalie's stories just gives me a glimpse of my future. Heck, even now Penny is dramatic. She will throw herself down and scream "Oh gosh! Weave me awone!" Like okay... She's also a crazy daredevil. Only one ER trip, and that was my fault... so far, so good! lol

  15. As soon as I read "there was silence" after asking to cut Barbie's hair I knew there was going to be something going on. Nothing good comes out of silence with kids! (except while sleeping). I giggled about the whole WORLD. I used to say my friends are doing it but the whole world beats that!

  16. I'd love to tell you it gets better, but My 14 year old has always been spirited. I'm pretty sure she will be the death of me

  17. My sister's children are so similar to yours. Her 11 year old daughter is very spirited as well. Your daughter is obviously very smart too! My sister is extremely worried about the teen years, but I told her I will be there to hold her hand while she cries :)!

  18. My dragon baby is only two and I am already terrified of the teen years. I can't wait to read your posts in a few years!!! HAHA They're going to be awesome.

  19. I don't know that Scarlet is very spirited in these ways, but there is time.
However, the imagination thing! She made a wish on a candle to be a mermaid when she gets in the water. She was saying, "Everyone will be so surprised when it happens!"
Yeesh. It's not gonna happen. What do I do??

  20. That's so cool your daughter is so daring! I don't know any mom that isn't terrified of the teen years, but you and her will do great x).

  21. That sounds like how my daughter is going to turn out. When i take something from her she is not supposed to have she very dramaticallyt falls on her knees and mourns the loss. Then she rests her head on the floor, sometimes hitting herself in the process. She cries so loudly and she stops breathing when she cries taking various colours.
But if it makes you feel any better me and my husband were very quiet kids and when we became teenagers we were, well, lets just say leading interesting lives. His brothers were very energetic children and when they became teenagers they both turned into computer geeks, although they had an 11 year difference. Perhaps the universe will reward us for all we went through with easy quiet teen years?
Somehow,it does not seem likely, but you never know.

  22. She's ADORABLE. A diva in training! My cousin's little boy wanted to go swimming recently and we were all standing around talking. He really wanted to go but his mom kept telling him to wait. Finally he started throwing a fit, yelling, "You're wasting my time!" He meant we were wasting the small amount of time left before he had to go to bed, but it was so funny, they couldn't be mad at him.

  23. Even if she has her challenging moments, I like how you frame it as her being "spirited". And if it makes you feel better, I was a somewhat spirited child and a relatively mellow teenager! She is super cute, but you probably already knew that ;-)

  24. Better spirited than passive, I believe, but it does demand lots of patience and creativity on the part of parents (and involved grandparents). Vi loves to swim, climb, accessorize, and find her way around roadblocks, too.

  25. Oh My Goodness. I can totally relate. From Day One, I knew I had a spirited child...my husband wanted to leave her on the doorstep of a friend of ours who was trying to have a baby...but we opted to take her back to the hospital where they said, "Um, she seems fine." And she was. But every baby personality test that I took on her behalf came up spirited. I guess it is our own fault...we called her Lil' Firecracker throughout the pregnancy and she lives up to it, every day, even nine years later. I'm like you...I worry about the next few years! :-) Should be fun!

  26. Your daughter is amazing! She rocks :) She's also stunningly beautiful. She is definitely a handful as well. Brace yourself for the teen years ;) LOL!!! I definitely remember ME as a teen.... However now my mama and I are the best of friends!

  30. Minus the daredevil thing, and we have the same child. Erica is so dramatic and she's such a diva. I just can't some days.

And Erica is not allowed to give her Barbies haircuts either. You can tell Natalie she's not the only one :)

  31. I have some daredevil dramatic boys here. Not all the things on your list are the same, but a lot sound familiar!

  32. Since I had a strong willed girl child who is now a strong willed teenager, I can tell you her personality is her personality. She'll probably never get pushed around! And that's a good thing. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. She's so darn cute it's probably hard to stay mad at her. But yeah...don't envy you for the teenage years!

  34. Spirited...that's the word I shall use for my son from now on. Some of your descriptions fit him, but not the "girl" ones. He is great at arguing and pushing the limits. He has to know exactly how close he can get to "the line" without crossing it. He wears me out!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ha! Oh my goodness, your daughter should meet my daughter... they could be spirited together.

The whole Barbie/Pony haircut thing, could have totally been my oldest. Oh my, I'm just laughing too hard over that.

Wonderful post. I like that word "spirited".

Thanks for sharing and for linking up to the #SHINEblogHop.

    Wishing you a lovely weekend.
    xoxo
