7 Things I Do When I Read Books About Henry VIII

**This post contains Amazon affiliate links which costs nothing to you if you click, but might allow me to buy another book. Thank you.**

I recently finished The King's Curse by Philippa Gregory.

I love any book that has to do with Henry VIII. Philippa has written MANY books about Henry VIII. (Maybe you've heard of the one called The Other Boleyn Girl?)

When I read books about Henry VIII, my family knows it.

Why?

Because I tend to say and do the following:

1. I tell Tom that I get to pick where we eat because I gave him a son and heir. As in, "You want Mexican. I want Italian. But you see, I did do my duty by giving you a son and heir..." (Once Tom said, "An heir to what? We have like $7 in savings.")

2. I ask the kids to kneel for my blessing as they did in Henry VIII's time. It was important to be obedient back then. The children would kneel and would say "lady mother." I asked my kids to call me lady mother and they had the nerve to look at me as though I'm crazy.

3. I wear my Anne Boleyn costume around the house.

4. I call Tom "Sire." You'd think he'd like it but he's all, "Knock it off."

5. I tell the kids stories about Henry VIII. "When he got fat, he smelled. They didn't bathe often back then. So he was fat, he had that wound on his leg that was infected and that smelled too. Can you imagine the smells back then?" Natalie's all, "I don't like this story."

6. I'll say, "Gosh, if I lived in Henry VIII's time, I'd be beheaded. I have a mouth on me." Tom is like, "I'm well aware."

7. I randomly curtsy. Even if I'm in pants. Tom is like, "Stop reading and watching Henry VIII stuff. You get even weirder."

Does history intrigue you too?

  2. hahaha. I don't think I could have handled the smell, lack of central air, and wearing dresses. My sister and daughter reenact the civil war. I got in a dress once to give tours of an awesome house built in 1820, but I never have plans to do it again.

  3. History doesn't intrigue me but I do get into the characters and story of what I'm reading and sometimes when I lift my head out of a book, I have to re-align and remind myself I'm not in that world anymore.

  4. haha! And I can't imagine the smells, no.
I love when I've been reading something from another time period for too long and I kind of blink into reality and want to talk as they did back then.

  5. LOL...Awe, I start to get the same way when I read historical fiction. I went through an Amish phase. Drove my family nuts, because I kept turning out the lights and using candles. Now we laugh. I love history. Will add the book to my goodreads list. Maybe I can drive my teenagers all a bit crazy. I like the idea of having them call me, Lady Mother.

  6. This is too funny. You make me laugh.

I don't read historical fiction but the side effects are very entertaining. And now I want Erica to kneel and call me Lady Mother.

  7. Heck ya! I started watching the Tudors and COULD NOT stop until I was through every episode. The ENTIRE time I had my laptop open and was reading about the actual facts and what happened. From there, I took it back to my AP world history books to and started browsing! It's SO odd to know how the past really happened and how it relates to today. What other books are you reading about them?

  8. I'm totally laughing about what you put your family through for the sake of Henry. LOL. Wasn't he the king who had like 3 of his wives hung? I would NOT have liked to live back then. Too much having to watch what I say.

  9. hahaha! This is hilarious. I feel like curtsying around the office now.

I'd be beheaded if I lived then too.

  10. Ah, this is such a cute post, Amber! Haha. I love Phillipa Gregory's books. I read the other Boleyn Girl and one other of hers (can't name the title at the moment). There have been some pretty amazing movies about Henry the VIII. You could have Netflix 'Henry' party! :)

  11. This post is awesome! I love that you get into it. That is kind of how I am with Interview with the Vampire.

  12. Bahaha this is great. I feel I am the same way.. not so much with history stories. But when I am engrossed in a good book, I take parts of it and apply it to my "regular-ole" life.

  13. This is hilarious!!!! I get like this when the Renaissance Festival comes to town every year. Drives my family nuts!

  14. Hahahahaha....I love Phillippa Gregory books too. I remember reading once that they moved from castle to castle because the smell got so bad it had to be abandoned for awhile....gross.

  15. HAHA what a quirky little trait! Love it! I am not a fan of that king, but that's only because the only exposure I've had to him was the movie The Other Boelyn Girl. He was a huge ass in that movie and I hated him. I also would've been beheaded. As a matter of fact, sometimes I tell my husband I am a reincarnated beheaded queen or princess. He normally just blinks at me. Good guys, our men!

  17. I often find myself trying to do spells and using wizard words after I read Harry Potter. I wish I could say I was kidding.

  18. I don't usually go that far with the books I read, but I do love a story that you can really immerse yourself in!

  19. I am laughing at the fact that I am not the only weird, crazy momma walking around. I am watching Reign and last night I told Jose (my 17yo) I will have him beheaded if he didn't do the dishes!!!

  20. My mum has nearly all of Philippa's book because she loves history. I love history too but have never got around to reading historical books. I remember going to Windsor Castle and standing over where King Henry is buried with Jane Seymour. :)

  21. Lmao at "I gave you an heir." Hahaha very entertaining post.

  22. This post definitely made me laugh! In all seriousness though, I love reading about history and people from the past. It's so interesting to see how much different things were in a different time and place.

  23. This funny and as soon as I read the title and first few lines I started singing in my head that old Herman Hermits song "I am Henry the 8th I am." So thanks for that... :) Rich B

  24. Ahah so funny you weared the costume and you went so much into the book's atmosphere!!!

  25. Bahahha, you're hilarious. History has never entertained me. Up until recently when Hamilton came out. THAT'S how history should be taught in schools!

    ReplyDelete
  26. HahahAha!! I think you and I share similar sense of humor. I actually have Kings Curse sitting on my bedside but I haven't read it yet. You've inspired me LOL

  27. I'm not so much of a history buff, but I do get really into whatever I'm reading and tend to take on bits and pieces of the story and characters. I love the Outlander series, and now that I've read and reread it so many times, I often catch myself thinking of certain things in terms of "What would Jamie and/or Claire do about this?" That being said, these books are fantasy with quite a historical fiction sort of swing, so if ever I was interested in history, it's because of Outlander.

  30. You are too funny!! Although I could see if I had a love for Henry the VIII and read many of his books I'd be transported to that time as well. Thanks for the chuckle.

  31. Do you also hold a fan over your decolletage? Was that a Henry the *th thing, too? I've always wanted to do that. :)

  32. Yes, history intrigues me a great deal. I've never been compelled to jump into full character though. I cracked up as I was reading this. It would be fun to watch the scenes you've written about being the played out. Hilarious!

  42. This is so hilarious! I love history, and like you, love using new expressions, puns, and words that I learn. I also like giving my family "mini" history lessons (by mini I mean 1-2 hour rants that are often delusional.) This was just what I needed to loosen up!

  43. hahaha, sounds you are infected with it now! I think I read The Other Boleyn Girl (if this was the one written as a diary). I'm happy I didn't live then, sounds like a rough life and I would not be able to keep my mouth shut either :)

  44. I have never read a book about him again after school. I really enjoyed the classes though!

  45. This is so funny! I like the idea. I haven't read a book for quite sometime now because I do most of my reading online.
