4 Reasons Why I Hate Getting Sick When Tom Is Deployed

I recently got double pink eye, mixed with allergies. It left me stretched out on the couch, surrounded by tissues. But I couldn't rest the entire day, because I have kids and my husband isn't here. So it's just me. I had to muster up the strength to parent, but it was tough. Still. I managed, and I'm happy to say I'm feeling much better.

But here are reasons why I hate getting sick when Tom is deployed.

1. I worry I might die.

If I did, would the kids dance over my carcass and stuff their faces with the marshmallow fluff I refuse to let them have for dinner? Would they even go for help?!

2. It's tough to move and make meals.

I could be like, "Get whatever," but Natalie would go for the marshmallow fluff I mentioned above, and Tommy would probably just eat chips. It's not a big deal for one night, but then I worry they'll tell their teachers: "I had marshmallow fluff for dinner--FIFTY spoonfuls, because Mommy was half dead on the couch." Then they might alert the authorities because they could worry I'm a drug addict or something.

3. I can't parent properly.

If the kids are fighting, I'm sort of leaning against the wall so I don't pass out while going, "Stop it," but my voice comes out in a whisper, so who would take that seriously?

4. The house looks scary.

The kids can sort of help, but their idea of cleaning is usually sticking everything into one giant pile. So there will be piles around the house, plus countertops and floors will be sticky, and a strange smell might be wafting around because of the dishes in the sink. This is usually the time when everyone wants to stop by to say hello.

I hope from now on I remain healthy. Tom should be home next month if the military remains nice.

  1. My husband is gone right now for some work stuff. I'm pretty self sufficient...but I miss him at night. It's so hard to have him next to me. You need to enlist the kids help. Work the lawn, put up dishes, fold clothes, even learn to cook (they aren't too young). Set up a reward system where they get stickers the collect and those stickers can be traded for a gift or money or a special trip! Reward them double for doing an excellent job. This will help you a lot. :)

    1. I should give the kids more chores. All they basically do now is put the dirty clothes in the hamper and feed the cat.

  4. I didn't realize until i got married and became instant mom that it doesn't really matter if you are sick or not because you are the primary _____ for me it is cook and kitchen cleaner. It isn't that my hubby can't or doesn't try but if I am sick and i leave it to him it will be bologna one night and frozen pizza the next. I am a little bit like...no we need to try and have something a little less processed for dinner every night.
    I hope you feel better!

  5. I know it's not funny, but I laughed out loud about the marshmallow fluff. Eventually they would run out and need to get help to get more ;) I hope you're feeling better soon!

  6. Parenting while sick sucks! I hate when I have to couch parent, but sometimes, you just have too. I hope the military stays nice, so Tom can come home.

  9. One more month! You can do it!!! :)

And I hate getting sick when my husband is around because he doesn't "believe" in sickness. He expects me to go on with all the regular stuff. I kinda want him to get sick for once!

  10. YES congrats on making it to the 1 month out mark. Sucks you're sick. I'm going to tell you a secret I picked up during my husband's first 15 month deployment....I taught my kid to kinda cook. Like she didn't ever really cook, but she knew where the cereal was, and the apples, and bread, and lunchmeat. So I'd make like a special place in the pantry for her to grab/reach what she needed (notice the food I mentioned was mostly breakfast....because, well, full disclosure....more often she had to get food because I was exhausted and lazy, not sick). It helped. That and movies like all day every day. Get well soon.

  12. I hope the military remains nice! And that Tom is home ALL through flu and cold season at the end of this year. I can't ever handle that again.. I swear. With or without Cassidy.
