Will He Still Like Me?

The butterflies were back.

The same ones that were there when I first met Tom in high school.

I'm told this is one of the benefits of having your husband deploy: it means you can experience the same excitement of when you first started dating. Don't get me wrong, it's a lovely feeling, but it's also a completely terrifying one because along with those butterflies comes the "will he still like me?" worries.

But of course he'll still like me.

But he's been gone for six months.

As I applied my makeup I thought, "Will he still think I'm pretty?" As I slipped the dress over my head I thought, "Will he like this? Maybe I should have gone with another outfit." As I did last minute touches on tidying up the house I thought, "Will he like what I've done with the place?" because yes, there are a few changes.

Will he still like me?

I swallowed hard as I drove to the airport. This was it. The butterflies banged around my stomach. In my head I thought about what I'd say to Tom when I first saw him. "Hello," of course, but then what? The kids weren't with me. I couldn't push them in front if I got flustered.

I stood there, gripping my welcome home sign. My phone dinged. Tom. He wrote, "On the ground." I chewed my lower lip. I ran my fingers through my hair. I straightened my dress.

Will he still like me?

The butterflies fluttered. I waited. Passengers began to filter out. I scanned faces, searching for the one I knew so well.

And then?

There he was, in uniform, walking towards me.

He smiled. I smiled. I fell into his arms.

He still likes me.

  4. So glad he's home, Amber. I get that nervousness, even though I've not really been apart from my husband too long.

Man, I can't believe it's been six months this time. I get the nervous butterflies when Cassidy goes away even for long weekends! It's kinda cool.

Your feelings are valid. Women can overanalyze like that, and it's okay.

  12. You have me all teary eyed! This post brought me right back to the day I picked up Cass from his deployment. I'm so happy to hear that Tom got home safely and I'm glad you two still like each other.

  14. Awww such a great post! I currently have this same fear. My husband is being stationed overseas for 12 months without me and in that time, it's very unlikely that we'll be able to afford to see one another. So my biggest concern is wondering if he'll still like me when he gets back and whether or not he'll still be attracted to me and want to be with me. Deep down, I know that these are somewhat ridiculous thoughts, but at the same time, it definitely worries me.

  15. Every single time. No matter how long or short the deployment. Twenty years and 15 patrols later, I still think the same thing. <3
