Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Kids Constantly Staring At Restaurants

"He's back," Tom told me. "I can feel him watching me."

Sure enough the little boy had popped up. He smiled and started bouncing around. His parents...well, I don't know what his parents were doing. Maybe they were on their phones? It was hard to tell. But I did see the kid they produced.

Time and time again. (He's in the corner.)

Look, I get that kids will be kids. But don't let your child stare at other diners. I'll be polite the first couple of times hoping the parent will tell Junior to knock it off. I'll say, "Hi, how are you?" and do a wave. But the fifth time and I'm like, "How about you sit down now?"

And then I wonder if I say that if there will be a blog post popping up online with the title "To the woman who told my child to sit down," and I'll be called an Ice Queen or some other nonsense for daring to discipline another kid even though the parent was not.

Look, I'm sure everyone's kid has done it at least once. Mine have. Both of them. But as soon as they did it, we told them to sit on their butts. To knock it off. Sometimes they'd scream back at us. Natalie did. And that's when I'd take her by the hand and lead her outside until she could act like a normal person again.

So please. Tell your kid it's not polite to pop up and stare at other tables.

It's creepy.

  2. It can be annoying. I think when they're really young - like babies/toddlers - I like it and think it's adorable. Older than that and I'm wondering why the parents won't let us eat in peace.

  3. Lol! Ice Queen. I get that too!

Seriously, kids acting out at restaurants is highly annoying. If they can't behave, don't bring them out. My mom never let me act that way!! I was scared to cross her; matter of fact, I still am lol.

  4. I laughed at maybe the other lady writing a blog post about you. I am always telling my boys not to watch other people eating! We go to one restaurant that is only open every so often and a lot of people we know go too. So it's hard to get them to pay attention to our table only!

  5. I think most kids stare-mine do-but I make them stop. Kids are just...weird, LOL. But my husband and I definitely make them stop doing it and we have a "no devices at the table" rule so we always see it when it starts!

  6. Funny. kids do that to me all the time but I always just figured it is because my hair is red and bright and they see it and think "What is that?". One kid told me once my hair was on fire. I just laughed. Kids are funny. I had one come up to me in the grocery store a few years ago when the peasant type tops were in style and point to my stomach and say "Baby in there!" all excited. I just laughed but mom and dad were shocked and apologized. Haha.

Last night we went to dinner and the kids were better behaved than the adults. I swear I looked over at this couple with 2 kids and they were both ignoring the kids. Both were on their phones, for the entire dinner. I told my husband when we sat down, before I even noticed them, I am putting my phone away. We played trivia together on the little machine at the table. We talked to one another, the way people use to.
Meanwhile mom and dad at the other table were so busy on their phones their 2 and 4 year old were just bored. I felt sad for them.

  9. Oh my god... I just saw the picture more clearly and yeah... I didn't realize you were referring to an OLDER kid. That's even more ridiculous!

    1. Yes, the tiny ones I'm not too picky about. But over the age of 4, it's weird.

  12. Ugh that bugs me too! I am very big on my kids having manners out in public and in restaurants because eating out for us is a huge treat, so I want them to treat it as something special. Plus who wants to be stared at as they eat??? sit down, kid.

  13. Ugh, yes. Kids are always doing this to us, it seems, and it's super uncomfortable.

  14. My boy did this last time we went out to eat. I didn't notice until the people in the next booth started laughing and handed us back our salt and pepper shakers, which I guess he thought we needed.

My kids are also fond of looking over the back of their seats in the airplane and staring the crap out of the people behind us. We're so creepy.

  15. Yep creepy. First or second time is OK. Fifth time and on is just not teaching important manners.
