Things That Annoy Me Thursday: My Husband Watching TV When We're Eating Out

"Mmm, this is good," I said, gesturing to my pizza.

No response from Tom. His gaze was going over my shoulder.

"This is GOOD," I repeated. "How is yours?"

No response. No eye contact.

"Hey!" I clapped my hands. Tom jumped. "What?"

"I'm trying to talk to you and you're watching..." I twisted around in my seat. "SPORTS?" It was a soccer game. A bunch of grown people chasing a ball around.

This happens a lot. When we go out and there's a TV on, Tom's attention will generally drift over to it. Once I was like, "We should go to Target afterwards," and he was like, "YES!" I thought, "Yay, he's finally appreciating how wonderful Target it." It turns out, a football team had just scored a touchdown. He wasn't responding to me at all.

We still have conversation when we're out, don't get me wrong, but Tom's eyes will randomly drift to a screen.

I suppose I understand. When we're out and I see books, I rush over even if we're in mid-conversation. And sometimes at the dinner table, I'll start to read.

So.

I guess we both need to work our attention spans.

Are you easily distracted?

  1. Hahaha yes! I just am used to it; my dads the same way.
I'm easily distracted. I probably have undiagnosed ADD.

  2. Sam and I went to Burger King the other day to grab a quick lunch, and he was on his phone the whole time.. it was in his lap and he was eating staring at his lap. I called him on it.. "I'm sorry, I thought you were going to have lunch with me, not your phone." I had to take his phone away from him at his own mother's birthday dinner because he was busy playing words with friends and not paying any attention to anyone around him.

  4. Oh yeah, I pretty much expect this! Though if we go somewhere were there's sports on some of the tvs and trivia on some of the others, we're both staring at screens! LOL

  5. We are pretty easily distracted as well. Sometimes, we can't even watch an entire movie without having to pause and do other things because we're just tired of sitting there.

  7. Not so much, but Cassidy can sometimes stare at his computer while I'm talking and I want to hit him!

  8. My husband chastises me for this all the time! I just get "in the zone" I guess, with what I'm reading or watching, and I don't hear him. He says he never does it...but of course he does, just not with sports. But put him in front of a WWII documentary and forget it.

  10. I've been trying SO HARD to be present. It seems like everything is an easy distraction these days... it's really hard to focus on one thing/person.

  11. My husband and I are both pretty bad with checking our phones all the time. He plays video games on his a lot. The last time we watched TV at a restaurant, it was for the Super Bowl, so everyone's eyes were on the screen.

  12. My husband and I both check our phones a lot, which is maybe worse than TV -- I don't know, I'll let you be the judge. But I agree -- annoying!

  17. My man recently downloaded his first app. Yeah, enough said? Haha. I miss our chats when out to eat. He always takes time talking to me and gazing over giving me the love look.

  18. Umm, yeah...! I am trying to be less distracted and be fully present when with friends. But we are all as bad as each other!! And oftentimes, we are chatting in our group chat to each other when we are together. HA

  19. I was out with S the other day and he decided to sit on his phone and look at the restaurant we had just sat down in on the internet rather than talking to me. I was not a happy bunny

  20. Yes! I hate how every restaurant has a TV. If it's on, my eyes are just drawn to it and I'm half paying attention to it despite my best efforts to ignore it. Unless sports is on, then it's easy to ignore.
