How To Not Be An Asshole While Staying In A Hotel

I've been in a hotel for two weeks now. We're waiting to get our house. (We should close June 3rd.) While I've been in a hotel, I've experienced all sorts of things. Here are some ways you can stay in a hotel and not be an asshole. Your fellow hotel guests will appreciate it:

1. Don't slam doors. Hotel doors are heavy. Close them yourself. If you walk in and let it close on its own, it'll slam and cause other rooms to shake.

2. Don't be noisy in the halls when it's early or late. Tell your kid to hush. You might have to be up at 6 AM but I trained my kids to sleep in, so tell Junior to whisper. Also, it's not cute to let Junior run down the halls at 6 AM. Other people can hear.

3. Don't take all the eggs. No, seriously. Most hotels will have a complimentary breakfast. A hotel worker brought out a bunch of new eggs and this man piled them all onto his plate. Is he training for a marathon? Trying to be the new Rocky? What?

4. Don't hold the elevator for over five minutes. If your party isn't ready, sorry. Other people need the elevator too.

5. Don't have loud conversations in the halls. Unless it's juicy. Then I can listen in. But if you're just discussing where to go to lunch, go to your room. Don't be all, "DO YOU WANT MEXICAN? TEXAS ROADHOUSE? WHAT? HUH?"

6. Don't stomp around your room. The people below you can hear. There's been times when I wanted to grab a broom and bang it on the ceiling like that one guy on Friends.

7. If you're in a pet-friendly hotel, don't let Fido constantly bark. I'm in a pet-friendly hotel and sometimes I hear dogs in the dead of night. Does Fido see a ghost? Should I be afraid?

What would you add to this list? Have you ever been a hotel for an extended period of time?

  2. Omg. Don't have loud trap music playing at 3am. I don't need to hear "fu*k yo hoes" and "get my smoke on" while I'm trying to sleep. And don't let your little hellraisers play on the elevator or in the hotel gym.
When we go away, we spend 4 days at a time at the hotel. It's always interesting!

  3. I can't stand that. We live in the middle of the woods and hear bird calls for the most part. I'm pretty unaccustomed to other humans, unless we travel.
The slamming doors! Ah! The eggs guy. I would have said something so rude. I'm glad I wasn't there!

  5. You are a brave woman. I would go nuts living in a hotel with my kids! Although, the free breakfast would be nice.

  7. Oh wow, it would be rough to be in a hotel that long! All of these things irritate me, too.

  8. OMG YES!!! To all of these!!! I wish people would just have the common courtesy of actually caring that other people are there too.

  11. Oh my lord, people acting a fool in hotels drives me crazy. I am a light sleeper, and all the shouting, stomping, door slamming at all hours makes me homicidal. I'm that annoying one that DOES hit the ceiling with a broom or call the front desk to complain.

  12. You'd think that people would be more courteous - where were these people raised?!?! Sheesh! But actually, I am probably that asshole stumbling in to my room at some weird hour and letting the door bang. Sorry!! ;)

  13. Loud talkers and door slammers seem to be the norm in every hotel I've ever visited! It's like they are all related to the people who try to jam their huge suitcase in the overhead bin on airplanes, usually in a panic 52 rows before where they are actually sitting.

  20. I'm thanking goodness right now I've never had to stay in a hotel for any extended length of time! I'm always amazed just how rude some people can be.

  21. That would suck if your dog were barking all night long. I know that my dog loves to communicate with other dogs and that would just be rough. Never saw anyone take all the eggs but I can understand that being a pain. And keeping the elevator does suck for sure.

  22. Oh my gosh the title of this post has me giggling! As a former Hotel worker I completely agree with your points here! If you only knew some of the ways guests behaved and the demands they had...I could write a book!we recently switched rooms at a hotel because the people in the room next to us (through an adjoining door) were young men who felt it appropriate to yell through the door and play their music super loud and then hang on the adjoining door!! So rude!

  23. Wow. What a title. Regarding hotel manners, the loss of them is a sign of the times. People the world over have strayed away from simple principles.
