Watching The Movie Now And Then With My Daughter

I love to have movie nights with my kids. As they get older, it can be difficult to bond with them. So I like to share movies that I enjoyed when I was there age. Remember when we watched Hook? And Curly Sue?

This time I figured it was time to share Now and Then. I invited my son to watch, but when he checked out the cover and saw it had a bunch of girls on it, he went, "No thank you. This looks like a girl movie."

"There's no such thing as a girl and boy movie," I argued. "You might like it."

He shook his head firmly.

So it was just the girls. My husband had to work late which is just as well, because he'd have passed too. He grew up with a sister who "made" him watch "chick flicks" and says that he's traumatized.

Naturally we had the proper movie foods: popcorn, gummies, chocolate...and then we started to watch.

Natalie cracked up at this part:

And this one, where Teeny stuffs her bra with water balloons filled with pudding. She wants bigger boobs, you see:

She was like, "Ooooooo" when this happened:

I reminded her that she's not allowed to kiss anyone until she's 18. And I told her that when I was younger, the girls went crazy over Devon Sawa.

"I can see it. He does have nice hair," Natalie said with a nod.

When this happened, Natalie said, "Hey, they said that same line in a Barbie movie I used to watch."

She said she liked the movie and would watch it again. We're going to have other movie nights. In fact, I'll be watching My Girl with Natalie on Friday. I already watched it with Tommy.

"You'll see why I don't like bees," I explained to her seriously.

Oh, and guess what? When I tweeted that I was watching Now and Then with my daughter, Thora Birch (Teeny) LIKED the tweet. This caused Natalie to shriek happily into my ear, because as you might know, Thora also plays Dani from Hocus Pocus, a favorite of Natalie's.

Have you seen Now and Then before?

  43. Being a boy, I have to disagree with you. There is definitely such a thing as a girl movie. And Now and Then definitely rates as a girl movie in my book. However, while saying that, I have to say that many "chick flicks" that guys consider chick movies, I just think of as romances. I loved Sleepless in Seattle or An Affair to Remember. Those are great movies and I don't think they are chick flicks. A chick flick to me is a movie where women are the central characters and boys or men if they exist are ancillary. This is like How to Make an American Quilt, Moonlight and Valentino, Beaches, Steel Magnolias, etc.
