Preparing For The Fifth Grade Graduation

"I already know you're going to cry," Natalie told me. "So bring lots of tissues."

She was talking about her Fifth Grade Graduation, which is Wednesday.

I had to send in a baby photo, because they are going to have a slide show of all the fifth graders as babies.

I sent this one:

I guess I'm still in disbelief that she'll be in Middle School this Fall. I still picture her as a little girl.

She is still a little girl.

But I know Middle School means changes. She might get interested in boys. Suddenly they won't just be friends. They could be more. She can join sports in seventh grade. She might have to deal with Mean Girls. Oh sure, sometimes girls get catty in elementary school, but it's pretty innocent. It might not always be so innocent in Middle School.

I know my heart will squeeze during the graduation because to me, it's like she's crossing the line from being a little girl, to a bigger girl.

Before her graduation, she tried on different dresses with different jewelry combinations. She figured out her dress, but she couldn't figure out what jewelry she wanted to wear with it.

My breath caught a few times as I went through the photos. She looked so old.

I hope she always keeps her glow. I know life will get tricky as she grows. It happens to everyone. You deal with boy issues, body issues, friend issues, grade issues.

But I hope she never loses her her sparkle. Her hearty laugh.

Wish me luck as I watch the graduation. I am not a pretty crier. I am stuffing my purse with tissues.

And I will remember her as she was:

And as she is now:

  1. All the best to her and hugs to you. It's not easy seeing them grow and foray into the big bad world. But don't worry she'll be fine because she has you :)

  2. She is a beautiful young lady. Congratulations on her graduation!

My daughter will only be graduating from preschool and I may shed some tears of joy. She will do great in Middle School.

  4. Oh wow, they don't do anything like that here. The 5th graders get a fancy lunch (that the parents pay for) one day during their regular lunch, but that's it.

  5. They grow up so fast! I don't think they do anything for the 5th graders here. They just move on up to middle school. Her dress is so pretty! Congrats to your daughter!

  6. I still remember her as a little girl too. When we "met", Des was a baby and Natalie was maybe.. 6 or so? Crazy how fast it goes. I'm nauseous at the thought of 5th grade graduation, and I'm still two years away. NAUSEOUS, I tell ya.

  7. She is so beautiful in that dress and with that leaf like hair band. She reminds me of the women in Reign tv show. You will be fine. She will always be your little girl no matter what.

  11. I keep telling my kiddo he needs to stop growing. I can't handle him getting bigger and bigger. I want him to stay my little baby forever just because. But I will enjoy every minute I have with him and savor it all.

  15. Kids grwing up and graduating is fun and sad at the same time, because you want them to be young or the same age longer. My daughter will be going to college after next year, that is old.

  21. The time does go by way too fast! And, the jump into middle school is definitely a big transition. With my youngest being in high school, all I can say is just keep the lines of communication open as much as possible as they get older.

  22. Your daughter is such a pretty young lady indeed and she truly always was! Even her baby photos are beautiful. I know it's so hard to watch them grow up and move to the next stage of life. In some ways I miss it and in other ways I am glad to have been through it. Even still, when they are young adults don't worry mama they still need ya!

  31. I like the headpiece she wore. Our school doesn't do a 5th grade graduation. My oldest just finished 6th grade. I am not admitting that I will have a 7th grader. High school is creeping up so quickly.
