Why You Need To See Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again

"You can dance,

You can jive,

Having the time of your life

Oo, see that girl

Watch that scene

Dig in the dancing queen..."

If the song Dancing Queen by ABBA starts to play, my daughter Natalie will immediately sing and dance. She absolutely LOVES the song. It was featured in the movie Mamma Mia, and she's been hooked ever since.

Natalie and I went to see Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again the day it was released. She has been a huge fan of Mamma Mia for years. When she was four, she latched onto the movie and has never stopped watching it. It was the music, I'm sure, but as she got older, she became enamored by the story.

For those who don't know, Mamma Mia is basically about a mother and daughter. The daughter wants to know who her father is. It could be one of three men. She sends invitations out to them for her wedding, her mom doesn't know until they show up, and hilarity ensues. Plus it's touching. I cried. Many times.

Naturally, when Natalie found out there would be a sequel, she screeched with delight. On the day we went to see it, Natalie wore overalls and a white shirt in the spirit of Donna:

The movie is incredible! There are many different reasons why you need to see it, and here's some of them.

1. The songs are (still) fabulous. The first Mamma Mia had incredible music, and so does this one. And yes, Dancing Queen is sung again, plus you hear past songs repeated. (Listen carefully: some of them are instrumental in the background. Natalie would whisper "It's slipping through my fingers!")

2. The story is sweet. It shows a young Donna, and yes, maybe sleeping with three dudes and not knowing the father of your baby is very Jerry Spring-ish, but the movie portrays it in a sweet way. Plus I love how all three men are in Sophie's life. And yes, like the first film, I cried in this one too. That was me sobbing into my popcorn.

3. You see familiar characters. Did you like Mamma Mia? Well, nearly everyone shows up in Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again. Plus, Cher is there, but only towards the end of the film.

4. It's a wonderful movie to take your children to. Yes, the story is about a mother and daughter, but sons who enjoy musicals will like it as well. My son does NOT like musicals, so I only went with my daughter.

5. The dancing will make you want to break out your moves! I've always said that I wish everyone around me would just break out into song and dance. I think the world would be a happier place. Who wants to go to a restaurant and start singing and dancing with me?

Bring out your inner Donna, and go see the movie!

(If I tried to do this, I'd break something. But Meryl Streep did it in Mamma Mia, because Meryl Streep is amazing and can do anything.)

  9. The reviews weren't great, but the box office stats told a different story, that is why I prefer reviews from real people like you! We love ABBA, and Cher!

  28. I have been waiting to go and see it and my son likes Musicals but he isn't interested in this one for some reason. Even though he watched the first one with me. So my husband said he would go but my son can't go to movies by himself so he and my husband will see something and I will watch this movie by myself.

  29. I love this movie too. Meryl Streep was a strong woman who defied the odds of raising her only child. And how she let her child explore and be independent. It must be very challenging for her.
