I personally love when I get mail that isn't a bill. There's something special about a handwritten note. Plus, it tells the person you really appreciate what they've sent. A text is so impersonal.
Sometimes my daughter argues when I tell her to write a thank you letter. But I remind her that she shouldn't be ungrateful. She'll say she can tell the person over the phone that she's appreciative. But I insist on a thank you note. I remember grumbling when I had to write them as a kid. But I'm glad I had to write them and I hope Natalie will feel the same when she's older. You're taking a brief moment out of your day to make someone else smile.
I don't just send thank you letters. Sometimes I send "thinking of you letters." I've kept a lot of letters people have sent me over the years. They are amazing memories. Some of my favorites are from my Nana Jo. She's 95 now and I appreciate all the advice she's given me over the years. I also have letters that my friends and I wrote to each other. Letters that my husband sent me when he was in basic training. On a TDY. Deployed They all mean the world to me.
So how about it? Will you be mailing a card? If someone has mailed you something, consider sending them a thank you card. They'll appreciate it.

ReplyDeleteIt is so funny, what you said about your daughter. Someone gave my son a card with a gift card for his graduation and they sent it in the mail. I immediately told him he needed to go buy a thank you card and mail it to her. He did not appreciate why that was important...but he sent the card (after way too much prompting from me), but it went out! LOL
ReplyDeleteI don't usually do "thank you" notes, but I definitely do "thinking of you" letters and cards. I love sending them out for no reason at all, and getting the surprised phone call or text when it arrives.
ReplyDeleteI haven't but I will do it. In fact, that'll be my thing for 2017. I do have a couple of friends who do and I love receiving them. It's that little touch that means more then just a thank you over the phone...

ReplyDeleteI still send thank you letters and I signed them as "With Love, Wen". It surprises me(and it makes me sad), how people care so little about something so simple to do, that in action says "I care for you."

Writing thank-you letters might be rare nowadays that everything can be easily send through online. I still send thank-you letter or thank-cards especially to my clients / PR friends for inviting me to their events.
ReplyDeleteWhere i live, it's not very popular to send 'Thank you' cards, but even, i'm a bit ashamed i've never did it before. I find it's a very classy thing to do.

ReplyDeleteI think it is important that we teach our kids to do this and not let this just go by the wayside. It is rare for me to get an actually thank you note anymore, usually it is a text or something posted on FB. I did just get an actually thank you note yesterday however from my niece for her wedding gift.
ReplyDeleteThis was actually something I've been trying to do more of. I sent a few letters with ornaments over Christmas time. And then I got these weird TN postcards that I'll sporadically send people. I love receiving random snail mail so I'm sure others do too!

ReplyDeleteMy thinking is to stand out of the crowd. Times have changed and the thank you letter have changed too into the form of thank you notes, texts and thank you emails. I think you are doing something out of the box and should get more notice compared to other people.
ReplyDeleteTimes have changed for sure. Most people just text their thank yous, fb msg or email. But we still do the old style thank you card, there is something special about it.
ReplyDeleteMy kids have always had to write birthday gift thank yous. And after this year, both kids will have had to write thank yous for graduation gifts. The best part is that was their idea.

ReplyDeleteI love snail mail and send out postcards whenever I'm traveling. "Thank You" notes and cards are not very common here, so I haven't sent any yet. But the thought is really great.

ReplyDeleteI always encourage my kids to write thank you cards too. My DIL always wrote one to us too when we lived in separate states.

I purchased Christmas cards with the intent of sending them out to family and they are sitting in my room now. I need to work on getting better at this.
ReplyDeleteI love getting mail, period. Even as an adult, I think that is my favorite time of the day! As far as sending Thank you cards in the mail, I remember doing that as a child after Christmas and birthdays. It is the polite thing to do and lets the person know you are grateful.

ReplyDeleteI don't think people do it anymore. Or I take that back. It's a generational thing. I receive cards back from my elders but not from my peers. I encourage my kids to atleast say thank you and make that acknowledgment for what they have received.
