How To Not Be An Annoying VSCO Girl

VSCO Girl.

I had no idea what that even was until my tween daughter Natalie told me. She had been going on about things that were "aesthetically pleasing" and I was wondering if I should book an appointment with the pediatrician because I was beginning to get concerned.

Then she told me about the app that made your photos look "old" (or a good aesthetic, as she described it. Seriously, for a while, she was obsessed with the word aesthetic) and a VSCO girl came from that. (And the app TikTok, which she's been trying to explain to me because it's become a more popular thing in the blogging world and companies have started to ask if we know how to use it for campaigns....)

So basically VSCO girls are all about saving the turtles and wanting to save the planet (no plastic straws!), friendship bracelets, checkered Vans, messy buns, and they love the vintage look. (Think baggy t-shirts, scrunchies, shell necklaces..) Is it a bad thing? No, not at all. I remember when the "emo" trend was in when I was in high school. If it's not hurting anyone, what's the big deal?

However, Natalie says that some VSCO girls are out of control and she has ways to be one, and not be annoying. (But obviously if your girl (or boy! Natalie says there can be VSCO boys too!) does these things, it's cool, of course.)

1. Do not make that annoying skkkkkkkk laugh. Really, VSCO girls do that, and Natalie says it's "sk-sk-sk-ary." (Ha.) She says it's funny to do it as a joke, but says there are "legit girls at my school who do it as their laugh." She says if you want to sound like a diseased snake to go right ahead, but you're probably making lots of people cringe. (I imagine the valley girls irritated people as well. "I was, like, totally buggin'"....)

2. Wear one scrunchie at a time. Two at the most. Some VSCO Girls like to wear a ton down their arm. And then they'll get upset if one goes missing. Or they'll be like, "DID one go missing? I have like 10 of these on my arm."

3. Be proud of your Hydro Flask, but don't tell everyone they must have one to save the turtles. You can save the turtles in many other ways. But yes, the Hydro Flask is BIG with VSCO girls because they are better for the environment as opposed to plastic water bottles. Natalie has been using a reusable cup for years now and the only reason she has a Hydro Flask is because it was on sale. Also, don't ever make fun of a girl who may NOT have a Hydro Flask.

4. Baggy t-shirts are cool and all, but it's okay to tuck it in as well. If wearing it loose is your thing, awesome! But if you want to tuck it in, don't let other VSCO girls tell you it's wrong.

5. Oh and if puka shell necklaces aren't your thing, don't wear one! Natalie isn't a fan so she's not about to put one on. She has been asked by other VSCO girls why she doesn't wear one and she's all, "I don't like them." End of story.

6. If you want to put stickers on your Hydro Flask, cool. If not, fine. It's a VSCO girl thing to decorate them with stickers. Natalie got hers from Redbubble. ManyVSCO girls have the Save The Turtles stickers or positive life stickers, but Natalie prefers the funny ones:

Bottom line? Make sure you stay YOU. It's okay to take some aspects of a VSCO girl, but don't be one just because it's the current trend. Don't wear things you normally wouldn't wear to fit in. For example, crocs. Crocs are another VSCO thing too, but Natalie is NOT a fan. Same with Birkenstocks. I guess VSCO girls like to wear them with socks and Natalie is all, "I don't get it."

Save the turtles.

But remember who YOU are.

  1. hahahaha well thank you for letting me know what a VSCO girl is, apparently I’m much older than I realized. I would identify as a hippie or tree hugger more than a VSCO hahahah

  2. I just this last week heard of VSCO girls for the first time from my teenage subordinates. I had no idea it's a full blown subculture!
It's so interesting, all the new ways each generation chooses to identify...
This was a super sweet post and it was fun to get a glimpse into the passions and annoyances of this subculture of Gen Z.

  6. I used to use VSCO for photo editing, but didn't realize it was a new trend with the younger set these days. I do see my tween niece all about the baggy clothes, scrunchies, and reusable water bottles, so she must be a VSCO girl too lol.

  10. I am all about saving the turtles and the planet because it is legit on fire and America has our heads in the sand about some really big and bad issues. I am still confused though, what does VSCO stand for? Where did the letters/word come from?

  34. First, what is VSCO??
Hahaha new generations are so OC with their appearance as if it is the most important than an empty stomach. The pressures are real though. But yet, appearance matters coz it gives a good impression.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Definitely agree with your takeaway!! Being pressured by society is taking its toll especially with social media on the rise... but staying TRUE to yourself is what makes you stand out in the crowd. Word!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I LOVE this post! My kids have been talking about this a lot lately and I've understood some of it but this brings it all together....except what actually does VSCO stand for??

    ReplyDelete
  37. It's funny how the names might change but some of the ideas stay the same. No matter what you call yourself, as long as you are true yourself that is all that really matters.

  38. laundry refers to the washing of apparel and other textiles. Laundry tactics are regularly finished in a room reserved for that purpose; in a character domestic this is referred to as a laundry room.
