Things That Annoy Me Thursday: No Venting?

I think it’s important to be positive.

But at the same time, it’s okay to vent.

I’m part of several Facebook groups and sometimes there is a vent post where people can leave comments on what is currently bugging them. Always, ALWAYS there will be someone who is all, “Instead of venting, how about we stay positive?” or, “Just wanted to say instead of a vent that I’m so proud of my husband!”

Eye. Roll.

Look, again, it’s OKAY to stay positive.

But it’s also OKAY to vent.

Venting helps. If I were happy all the time, I’d want to smack myself. I could never befriend someone who was constantly blowing sunshine from her butt. It just wouldn’t work and I’d have to bite my tongue to prevent from saying something snarky whenever she’d go on about her perfect life and poops that smell like roses.

I have to practically sit on my hands to not say something to the anti-venting people. I want to say, “My current annoyance is the people who whine about those who are venting. Aren’t they technically venting too…?” I don’t, because some people online have VERY thin skin and would take immediate offense.

So instead, whenever I see a venting post I basically make a bet with myself, “In an hour, someone will complain about the venting…”

And more often than not, it always happens…

  1. I totally think venting is good for the soul. If you were venting all the time, everytime I spoke to you, okay, then we might have a problem. But usually when you vent it blows over, right? You get it out of your system, sigh and move on, right? You do have happy moments positive days most of the time. Its just venting once in a while is perfectly healthy.

Could be these anti-ventors are trying to keep themselves from drowning in what they perceive as a cesspool of despair. Because they think one vent is a major big blown out of proportion negative thing. They just don't get it.

Venting is good for the soul, yes. It is good to reach out for support in those situations. Its good to have people hear what you're going through, it validates you. Next time somebody wants to fart rainbows, how about saying "How about being really real for a moment here?"

  2. I think Furry Bottom says what I was thinking -

Venting is good for you - 'cept when it becomes chronic.

  3. I tend to vent on Facebook. Most of my friends are there to support me, but there is always someone who has to tell me that my life isn't that bad.

Keeping it all bottled up inside isn't good either!

  4. Venting is great! Nothing feels better sometimes than to rant and rave and just get whatever off your chest! However ... there's a fine line. I happen to know some chronic complainers for whom "venting" has graduated into full-blown bitching, all the time, about everything. You've got to know when venting is become too much of a habit - and that's when the positivity helps.

But yeah, if it's not a constant thing, venting can be a very useful psychological tool!

  5. Vent away. That's how we know we aren't alone with the problems we have. We learn from others trials and triumphs. So vent away!

  6. Venting is good! It's better to vent than to keep everything bottled in. Vent away!

  7. I get annoyed whenEVER someones comments the exact opposite of what a Facebook post is about. If it's a venting thread, and you don't need to vent? Don't post! If it's a "does anyone know a good hair salon/gardener/dress shop/whatever, and your only thought is "I have no idea"? Yeah, keep it to yourself. Why do people feel the need to comment on a virtual conversation that they don't really have anything to add to?!? Do you just walk up on random conversations in real life and through in your two cents worth of nothing?! (This may or may not be one of my biggest Facebook pet peeves, and I may or may not be dealing with "that person" RIGHT FREAKING NOW. Grr ...)

  8. Thank-you!!! Finally someone who feels the same way I do. Even as I sit here there are things I would love to vent about. But, I don't dare, not even on facebook. Because, I know that there are those sunny people who are going to leave advice on being happy, and how good I have it. It is good to vent. I think it is terrible to hold it all in.

    Great Post!

  11. hahahaha...this is TOO funny. Sometimes, I feel like I vent a little too much...then I tell myself that I am alone with a 3 year old all day, and sometimes, facebook is the only place where adults exist in my life to talk to...lol.

  12. Venting is a good thing. It can't feel good to leave all the frustration inside.

  13. Oh, come on guys, be positive! (oh, sorry, I guess saying 'venting is good' is being positive. never mind)

  14. I'm real scared of the perpetually happy people. It's like they are one step away from going on that show "Snapped".

  15. I vent a lot on my blog - less so on Facebook but it's certainly fair game. Sometimes I really want to vent about people passive aggressively and then when they question it, I'd be all, "Oh no! I was talking about someone else..."
    (yeah right)

  16. I enjoy a good venting session...in moderation of course. I agree with the previous poster who said you just stick with the theme of the post.

  17. Venting is good for you. Pollyannas are irritating. Although, I'm disappointed that my poop doesn't smell of roses, so I might start lying that it does.

  18. Venting is healthy, and a great way to relieve stress. I couldn't go a day without complaining about something. Ha ha!

  19. I'm with you. Venting is healthy. Those people who act like everything is perfect...not so healthy. Stepford wives maybe?
