Why Pointy Nails Scare Me

I admit, I'm not that girly. I've never had a manicure before. When I say this to people, they're like:

But it's true. It's mostly because I do a lot with my hands and a manicure wouldn't be worth it. Plus I can't have things on my nails--I feel weighed down. It's most likely a sensory issue. I also don't bother because I'd rather spend the money on a book.

I've noticed that pointy nails seem to be on trend.

These.

And I have odd thoughts going through my head when I see them. I mean, yes, I admire the color, because I do love colors.

But here are my thoughts, because I've always been strange, and here is why they scare me:

1. Wouldn't they poke someone in the eye? What if you go to hug someone and a nail goes into an eye?

2. How do you wipe properly? I'm not trying to be gross, but seriously, can the TP still be gripped? Or would the nails rip it? Would your butt get poked?

3. Can you clean? I clean daily but I imagine the nails would get chipped rather easily. I'd be doing the dishes and SNAP! I'd be pulling off the couch cushions and SNAP!

4. If I rub my eye, would I poke it? I know this goes along with question 1, but I also worry that I'll poke my OWN eye and then have to rush to the ER and be like, "Oh, I was rubbing my eye and my claw jabbed it."

5. Do tiny kids call them claws? Because they sort of look like colorful claws to me.

6. Is it expensive to get the nails to look like this? It looks expensive. As I mentioned before, I'd rather buy a book. Or go to Target.

7. Can you type properly with pointy nails? Or do you have to peck the keys?

These are probably some bizarre thoughts. But you know. I do wonder. Aren't you curious? Or maybe you have the answers? You can check out all the trending beauty discounts and save!

So do you have pointy nails?

  1. I just saw your post and I had to comment, I love manicures but I don't like pointy nails or stilettos I think is how they are called. I like the square rounded short length as I type a lot at work.

I always imagine if I would have to peck at the keyboard 😬, and would it hurt? I am curious to see some of the comments you get.

  2. Pointy nails freak me the eff out too! Lol

  3. I always look at them and think they could be used as a weapon. I am a man and do not get fake nails put on. However my partner in crime finally convinced me one time to get a manicure and pedicure. Do not worry about your nails but go give it a try. Im only saying this because I am now kind of addicted getting them done hehe :)

  4. I love getting my manis, but hells NO to pointy nails. Argh!

    ReplyDelete
  5. These stiletto nails always scares me but it looks so cute and amazing! I prefer rounded short nails

  6. I cannot stand those coffin nails. Yuck! It's so tacky and 1997. When did acrylics come back in style?? I stopped doing acrylic somewhere around 2001.

Love manicures tho. Make me feel kind of complete. You should get your toes done sometime! It feels so nice and you're a mom!! You deserve it!!

    1. Totally understand, just came here to tell you that they're not called coffin nails. Coffin nails are flat at the end, the ones in the picture are called stilettos!

  7. I rarely get my nails done. Maybe twice a year over a very good year. I usually go for square shaped nails, but I went out of my comfort zone and got some pointed nails this time 'round. I can confirm that although they take some getting used to at first, you can still clean and "wipe" with them hahaha. Typing with them is a bit of a task, though.

It was fun to try something new, but I'll probably be back to a shorter, flat-topped shape next time.

  8. Hahaha .. The curiosity around everything happening to us .. I love your thought process ..just like a kid who want to know every " If " & " why "

  9. OMG, I feel you! I think exactly the same! Pointy or just super long! Yeah, ow do you wipe? I always wondered ahah xx corinne

    ReplyDelete
  10. I feel the same as you do.. for the whole of my life , I never had those long nails forget the pointy ones. I get so uncomfortable performing the daily chores , typing which big nails on. One of my colleague had them and initially I really feared her;).. But she loved doing things with them on!

  11. OH man, NO. As a writer/photographer/mama, I have no idea how I'd pull it off? And I'm a clean freak about germs under my nails.
That said, I'm all for everyone doing their own thing but ME??? Never. Scary!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Uncomfortable, high maintenance, too girly-ish, fake, pointless, maybe you can tell I'm not a fan ;)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Not fan of tip nails and found this to be funny but true. Never had manicure either.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh my gosh this made me laugh!!! I used to wear mine long like this and evey time I went from short to long there was an adjustment period where I need to learn to type and clean lol, but after a few days it was all ok.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I cannot do long fingernails period. In the summer, I garden and keep my nails super short to keep the dirt out. In the winter, I have slight nails but only slight.

    ReplyDelete
  16. This post is great! I fully agree. I've never had my nails done either! I like nail polish once in a while, but I've never understood the fake nail thing. I didn't know that pointy nails were the new "in thing" but I personally am not a fan of them. They remind me of villians like Cruella Devil.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I couldn't agree more. On the one hand (no pun intended - promise! Sort of.), they are really cool to look at but still... nope. I can't do it!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ha, I love the comment calling them "coffin nails", she "nailed" it for me ;)

I agree with all of your points here. I would definitely rather spend my money on a book and while I do like my nails to be manicured and look good, I would not be able to handle nails like this. I don't even think they look good...it's reminds me of Morticia Adams for some reason! And your point about wiping..ugh, yes! I can just imagine the problems there.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I am a little weird when it comes the nails. For me I need them extremely short. When I type in Computer long nails drive me insane. I do like some of the pointy nails because they were creative.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Pointy nails are creepy! I know I'd never get anything done. I'd definitely poke my eye out or something!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I do not like pointy nails! I would stab myself in the eye with them! Squorval? Is what I get Square/Oval lol

    ReplyDelete
  22. I so agree! I can't even get used to wearing French tips, let alone a nail with more length!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Seriously! #2 is a damn good question! I would never be able to wear these pointy fake nails. I can't even stand shorter round or squared ones on myself!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love the look of some of the pointy nails I see on Instagram, but I can't imagine having them. I don't think I could type at all.

    ReplyDelete
  25. YES!!! I don't understand these pointy nails! They really creep me out.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I've never had a manicure either, so I can't totally relate to the looks! Pointy nails are so not my taste, I prefer functional nails lol.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I do get my nails done...not regularly but occassionally. Most often I do pedis but I hate the pointy nails too.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I've never had a manicure either. I was going to get one for the first time last summer on vacation. My daughter and I were both going to have manicures at the spa in this fancy hotel where my husband had us staying for his work trip. It cost $90. For each of us. I assume my hands were going to be able to light fires and teleport objects after this treatment, but I couldn't part with that much cash.

Those pointy nails would tear stuff up in the garden, wouldn't they? I can just imagine pulling a dandelion by stabbing the ground with my index finger. I mean, you couldn't wipe or type, but you could weed like a boss.

    ReplyDelete
  29. This post is so funny...I love it. But it is ALL TRUE! I'm not totally on board with the pointy nails either.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I would totally poke my eye out with pointy nails, ha ha.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I don't do much with my nails - they have a little length, but fairly short with a natural shape. I am a busy person and I don't have time to maintain a manicure. Honestly for the sake of practicality, I just don't bother! I need nails that I can type with, play musical instruments, weed the garden, etc!

    ReplyDelete
  32. No Pointy nails for me, no way! I had pointy long nails one time thinking it's cool, I got rid of them after scratching my son, since then I don't grow my nails at all :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've never had a manicure or worn fake nails either! They look so uncomfortable. I play violin as well so it would make playing an instrument pretty much impossible.

    ReplyDelete
  34. LOL this is a hilarious post! I agree. I can't have it for myself unless just for pictures. Crazy scared of em as well.

  35. I don't like pointy nails cause it can be dangerous trust me.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Having a long nail means high maintenance. And its expensive! Mine I only keep it to normal length, no pointy. But I let my thumbnails a bit longer because its for protection :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I do get you! I keep my nails always squarish because pointy nails suck and they look ugly.
As you pointed out pointy nails (pun intended) have many disadvantages. You can barely type with them and whenever you make dough it gets stuck under the nails.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Personally I don't like pointy nails..I feel like I may scratch myself or some one else..:P

    ReplyDelete
  39. I have natural long nails because I have been blessed with good nails and I think my diet also plays a role in this. I have the traditional almond shaped nails with half moon manicure - most of the time. Some would say it's high maintenance but I do my cleaning, gardening, dog walking and never poked my eye out despite wearing contacts. Depending the TP. Do you really wipe yourself with your fingertips or your place the TP on your flat fingers? This really made me laugh... =D

    ReplyDelete
  40. Im not the biggest fan of pointy nails but I used to grow my natural nails. When they grow naturally you adapt easily so typing, and wiping arent difficult and I promise totally possible lol

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree - about the pointy nails at least. I can't imagine typing with them. Cleaning...opening jars?? anything!

But I DO get my nails done...square nails!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I keep my fingernails short, but apply nail polish to them too. I think all your concerns about pointy nails is true. I cannot type if my nails are in the way. It would be so uncomfortable to cook and clean.

    ReplyDelete
  43. omg so happy I am not the only one !! I also find them gross and have all of these thoguhts !!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I have seen some people with some crazy nails lately. And I can understand you not liking the whole pointy nail trend. It would be pretty crazy the things you would have to do to deal with all of that. Although I imagine they would be good for giving massages.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I love a fun and chic nails, I think I've tried it all. Now it's just natural and I always get it this way now.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm also a round nail person rather than pointy!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ha ha pointy nails scare me too. Reminds me of Halloween costume etc.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hah, I am SO with you. I can't even do squared off nails. A nice rounded nail is what I'm all about - I break them less this way!

    ReplyDelete
  49. aha I always want to know how they pay for their shopping when they need to lift some coins:D

    ReplyDelete
  50. Seriously, I've always wondered how people type with those long nails!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hahaha, I can't imaging myself having a pointed nails even if its the trend. I think it's not helpful and more prone to hurting myself and others too. It's to hard to maintain too, I guess. - ANOSA

    ReplyDelete
  52. Oh girl, we are on the same boat. Am scared about having pointed nails too, but I do manicure and pedicure. Looks like it's a girly thing. But mine are round and short.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The pointed nails remind me of the Wolverine haha I'm not sure I could handle those claws without accidentally hurting myself or someone else lol very entertaining post

    ReplyDelete
  54. Your fears about pointy nails are also mine. I don't nor will I ever have pointy nails because it is to hard to do things when they are like that. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Too funny. They are a bit witchy aren't they. I much prefer a square nail myself

    ReplyDelete
  56. LOL! I love getting pedicures, but I don't want anyone to touch my fingernails. I hate getting my fingernails painted. And those pointy nails scare me, too.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I had manicures done twice, several years ago and wasn't a fan. It's mostly because it wasn't easy to type on a keyboard. I got my first pedicure a few months ago and loved it. I'd probably do that again when I get extra money.

    ReplyDelete
  58. You think pointy nails are scary? have you heard of the new craze called "coffin"? That freaks the sh*t out of me!

  60. Can you change a dirty diaper with those nails??

    ReplyDelete
  61. There is one notable exception - splitting. Hardwoods split more easily, than soft. Starting with softwoods like balsa and pine, through rock maple and oak, and on to ironwood and teak, you come to a point where a nail thick enough to be driven without bending is also thick enough to split the wood.Top Nail Fungus Treatment

  62. Pointy nails do look scary, and they are. They can seriously hurt someone, if not being careful.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I love long nails but I don't go get them done instead I do them at home but not super long since I do clean and cook all day everyday so they tend to last for 3 to 4 days which is pitiful. So I usually don't put them unless I am going on holiday where I know I wouldn't be doing too much hands work.

    ReplyDelete
  64. OMG I hate, hate, hate those pointy nails. They don't even look good and I would totally poke my eye out.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I can't even tell you how much I hate long, pointy nails! I keep mine short and slightly squared. I think they are disgusting and unsanitary. Gross! I do get manicures on a regular basis because when I try to paint my nails, it looks like a 2-year old did it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I have never liked the pointy nails. Scary looking and dangerous.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Ha ...ha...ha...I can't withstand having long nails. That is not practical in my opinion. And you right, it makes difficult to type, ha ..ha..

    ReplyDelete
  68. I have gel nails and have had fake nails for well over 20 years now. You get used to them, really, they do not get in the way at all. There are such great gel products these days, no chipping, no cracking no matter how much you are cleaning!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I've never had acrylic/fake nails, but I must admit having pointy nails would scare me too. Especially when doing my eye makeup, I'd be scared to poke myself in the eye!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I get my nails done every couple of weeks, they're squarish with rounded edges. I've seen those awful pointy nails and don't understand why anyone would want their nails that way.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I totally understand you! I'm a girly girl, but I'm not into my hand nails done and I'd also prefer to spend my money on a book. I'm scared of the same things as you, and I don't think I'm going to get pointy nails in the future. :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. My thirty year old daughter does her nails like this. Though they really don't look bad on her, when it comes to myself, I am not a fan of the claws at all.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I always ask how do they wipe properly. I guess they can be cute but they are a hazard!!

    ReplyDelete
  74. I don't have pointy nails, my nails just grow long and I file them. But I rarely have time to make them look pretty like this. I think it looks great, but for my lifestyle and laundry list of cleaning and doing things with my hands, nails like this wouldn't last a week. It would seem like the upkeep for them would just be too much.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Yeah, I am seeing this all over Instagram. At first I was repelled by them, now I am simply grossed out.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'm not into pointy nails either. They simply aren't very practical, and they do have a kind of harsh look to them. I would think it's like a lot of other trends that don't last long.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I'm not into the long pointy nail trend. Though some of the designs are really pretty and I think it looks okay on other people. It's just not for me.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Thank you! Those things are truly terrifying. I would poke my husbands eye out or mine!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Interesting read. The pointy nails look fascinating, but only from a distance! Certainly, not for me - I keep my nails clipped short for practical purposes.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I wouldn't say scared...but I don't like pointy nails. It's more of a practical thing. I rarely grow my nails now because a millimeter of growth already makes my nails sharp and I would accidentally scratch my kids whenever I am bathing or taking care of them :(

    ReplyDelete
  81. There seems no point one should need pointy nails, I could totally relate to your questions. I don't like big nails either, it's tough to clean with big nails.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I'm a preschool teacher. In as much as I want to follow the nail trend I can't. But I think even though I can, I won't, especially the pointed nails. It can potentially hurt others. Yikes! I'd still go for the short and clean nails. :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. Urgh I think they are awful. I hate to say it but I think they don't look very classy and a bit cheap to me. Eeek, sorry point nail people :/ I much prefer a short squoval french manicure when I get the time to have one!

    ReplyDelete
  84. I love getting my nails done once a month with my sister but neither of us like pointy nails more shelilac for us, simple, cute and lasts long.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I don't get it either, lol. I'd grow my nails but I make sure to shape them into sort of like a squared shaped tip so it's won't be scary! I guess it completely depends on your taste.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I always love having a beautiful manicure. But I mean beautiful, not like these :)) At the end of the day, people like what they like, and everyone is entitled to have the manicure they like... But I surely wouldn't ware those nails :)

    ReplyDelete
  87. I type all day at work so these are very impractical for me. I know lots of women who do it though!

    ReplyDelete
  88. I prefer having neat nails. Sometimes, i do use lacquer, but with subtle shades. It's interesting though, that these people can do their chores having those nails.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I love to have simple and neat nails. I agree with you Pointed nails scare me too. I am not a fan of stilettos too. One more thing even if I spent all the money to make all these pointed nails it won't last as I have to do the chores at home.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Oh, I knew it. I am not the only person in the world who finds it weird to have stiletto nails. Maybe, because it's not the normal shape of human nails. Great point there.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I have my nails pointed but theres two different types - Stiletto where they go to a sharp point (I'm not a fan of them ones) and then Almond, they are more rounder and a little like oval nails, they're easy to maintain and you can do everything with them shaped like that x

    ReplyDelete
  92. Totally having the same questions as you girl. I like to do my nails but not this pointy and long.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I think the stiletto nail is a fashion forward trend that signifies a risque self expression. While It's not my thing because I type, clean, tend to go for a cleaner more subtle look, and they freak my fiance out lol; I could see how some like it. I have a friend who was a fashion major in Italy, works in retail merchandise, & lives a lifestyle completely different from mine, and they're her thing. All that said I guess its freedom of expression and a form of art. Look at it that way and less animalistic lol it may help your discomfort.

    ReplyDelete
  94. For the life of me I can not understand these crazy nails. The only people that could have them are those that have someone doing everything for them. Including wiping their butt!

    ReplyDelete
  95. For a clumsy person like me, I will surely injure myself if I have long nails.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Hahaha it scares me too! And im clumsy and a busy person so these nail trend isn't for me.

    ReplyDelete
  97. They are never appealing to me, I like short clean nails because I do too much household chores (Gee Vee)

    ReplyDelete
  98. They scare me too! I can barely keep my regular nails looking nice, I think I'd poke my own eye out with them!

    ReplyDelete

This minimizes the time of filing. They come in more than 160 sizes and they are trimmed to perfectly fit your nail bed. Virtual nails are said to last for at least 2 weeks. Nail Care Hub

  100. Not trying to be a hater but I think they look awful, a trend I hope people grow out of. And no, not “sort of like claws” definitely like chicken claws. Not a very feminine look at all.
Good point above though: they’d be good for Halloween, on the 1 day you are trying to freak out everyone

    ReplyDelete
  101. Reading all the post I could agree with you ...I don't like pointed nails...They look scary, freaky, and when I see ppl with pointed nails...it looks as if they are coming at me, with their hands up and starting to growl...its scary as h....Are you kidding me ? Seriously ? Nope not happening...But if any type of nails...it would be Sqaure, short,or rounded...Why ? One.word...Sophisticated...intelligent...Independent woman attitude..."I got this" role

    ReplyDelete
  102. Love you post. It amazes me how some tastemaker every year decides something like "this year, pointy nails are in!" and loads of people just follow along. Like you, I am bookish and strange, and I have never had a manicure. I am also girly, but I see nothing "girly" about pointed nails. They're just nasty. Same goes for over long nails. I have no idea why any woman in her right mind would think they're attractive. I'm sorry, they just remind me of something you'd see in a seedy carnival freak show.

    ReplyDelete
  103. HAHAHA this post and the comments are so gross and judgey. Mind your own business and don't get pointy nails!

    ReplyDelete
  104. Imagine your partner has these nails. One night (or day) you're in the throes of passion with them and "hit" them just right. Next thing you know, you're in the ER with deep lacerations in your back and blood is everywhere. No thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  105. So I have these nails. There not stick ons there my own nails shaped with a gel overlay.

    1. In 15 years of having these nails iv never poked anyone in the eye.

    2. You can wipe properly. You wipe with your fingers not the nails lol

    3. It's great for washing your hair and I use a scrunched to wash in the shower, not affecting the nails.

    4. Iv never poked myself in the eye.

    5. People do call them claws

    6. I pay £30 a month for my nails so not really expensive at all and that's for an infill, colour and design.

    7. It's easier to type with the nails then stubby fingers lol I had to cut my nails right down during covid and I couldn't type

I love them and they can look really pretty if done properly. My partner loves them as there great for scratching itches on his back.

Hope this clears things up 😊
