School starts tomorrow!
I know. Some people are probably like, “Okay lady, we get it. You want to shove your poor kids out of the house.”
Because yes, I’ve come across blogs or comments that basically state that some folks don’t understand why parents are excited to send their kids off to school.
I’ll tell you why: I enjoy my peace. I enjoy my quiet. I ENJOY MY SPACE.
I have very, erm, spirited children. They rarely sit and watch TV quietly. They want to go. And create. And go. And create. My living room table is usually covered with Play-Doh.
So yes, it annoys me when I get a snide remark like, “How can you want your kids gone? I’m so empty when mine leave.”
That’s great. For YOU. I was an only child. I was used to my peace. And quiet. So when I don’t get this for months at a time, I tend to get crankier. I don’t want to be a Cranky Mom.
School is a healthy way for my children and I to get some space from each other.
And I don’t feel the least bit guilty for saying that I cherish my peace.
And quiet.

I am an only child as well (and an introvert). I have 4 kids....I completely understand where you're coming from. Being able to sit and read without being pestered to "do this" or "do that" is a wonderful thing. Extroverted people or people who come from large familes where it was always loud and chaotic don't understand why we need our quiet time, just like we'll never understand why they need the noise/chaos that feeds them.
ReplyDeleteI'm totally doing the back to school dance with you. I have another 13 days until I get to bundle mine off though :/
I'm SO jealous. Mine don't start for 11 more days! I love back-to-school time!! Know what I also love?? MONDAYS!! Most people hate Mondays because they have to go back to work or school. SAHM's LOVE Mondays because everyong goes back to work or school. haha
ReplyDeleteI was an only child too, and am very used to my peace and quiet. It's strange not having it haha! My son won't start school for another couple years, but the older two are going back soon. I'm actually not 100% sure when they go back to school.. haha!
ReplyDeleteHope you get some much deserved peace and quiet soon :D
I'm sad that mine is starting school, but only sad that she's growing up. I'm gonna enjoy the hell out of every ounce of peace & quiet I get while she's in school :)
ReplyDelete3 more weeks. I can't wait! :-)
ReplyDeleteAmen sista! I'm always kind of sad when school starts, but only because it indicates that my babies are growing up far too quickly. Once I get past that I'm like, "Woohooo!!
ReplyDeleteSo jealous!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more. Four more years until mine is in school :p
ReplyDeleteOh my word, AGREED TIMES A THOUSAND! My daughter isn't crazy spirited, but she's very active, creative, and of course noisy. I'm a only, and an introvert, and just like you, I get so cranky if I don't have my space! I'll be very glad for school to start again, mostly because (since I work outside the home) we're returning to a more fixed schedule, and I can find my own space within that much more easily.
ReplyDeleteScrew the people who get snide - everyone recharges differently. Wanting to the best mom you can be (ie: not cranky mom) means you are doing it right. Mommy snobs are just that: snobs. Who gives a flip what they think?
I'm with you! I'm so glad our school districts changed the schedules to "modified year round" and the kids only get about 6 weeks summer break. I was soo tired of hearing "What are going to do today?" and I'm not even a SAHM anymore! hahaha!! I worked a full day then came home to kids who were ready to hit the streets running when all I wanted was to take off my bra!! :)
ReplyDeleteI do not blame you one bit. The other day I was home alone. No dogs, no kid. I sat and stared at the ceiling for a minute and just took it all in. It was amazing.
ReplyDeleteI hear ya! I need my peace and quiet too but my boys have reached the ages where they like to sleep late...like really late!...so going back to school is not exactly the biggest break for me. I means early mornings and more stuff I have to fight with them to do!
ReplyDeleteThere are people who want their kids around?! Seriously. With three kids all 5 and under, I am so excited to "get rid" of one of them this year, even if it's only for half a day kindergarten. I grew up in a large family, but I still need my alone time. I haven't had alone time in 5 years!
ReplyDeleteMy child sounds like yours. I love her to death, but I am pretty sure when she starts school (still a few years away), I will be happy to have the time apart. Heck, right now I would be excited to eat a meal in peace instead of always stopping for some reason.
ReplyDeleteNor should you. To each his own. I have mine around all the time, and I DO like it, most of the time. But I sure do wish I could have 12 hours of uninterrupted ME TIME.
ReplyDeleteMine is an only child and headed off to dorm life tomorrow. I have a feeling he is not going to like never having his own "space."
ReplyDeleteWhy in the world do schools think its a good idea to start on a Friday anyway?
Amen, sister. Mine started back this week and it has been PURE BLISS.
ReplyDeleteI say that about my husband all the time... and he's home for two weeks on vacation. Nothing will get done.
ReplyDeleteDon't feel bad! I feel the same way.
ReplyDeleteMine will be home for the first time in 7 weeks in a couple of hours. And as super excited I am to see them again I'm sure that by the time they go back to school I'll be very happy about it.
Enjoy the quiet!
I get it, I love my kids, but for a few hours a day it's nice to listen to the fridge hum.
ReplyDeleteOh boy can I ever relate to sending kids off to school! I was an only child as well and need a certain amount of quiet time to rejuvinate and be a better person. My kids are mostly gone now, have an 18 year old step daughter at home but since DH is STILL out of work and has been for the better part of the past few years, I NEVER hardly ever get the house ever to myself anymore. And my family wants to know why I am so cranky. LOL!
ReplyDeleteI don't blame you! Princess is only 2. I love spending time with her, but there are times when I want peace and quiet. Most importantly, I like to catch up on sleep. So, I totally agree with what you're saying.
ReplyDeleteSing it sister!! My son is also "spirited". So much so, that I only gained 15 pounds with my second son because we were doing SO MUCH!!! Granted I was a little, um, fluffy, to begin with, but still. We were busy. Enjoy the quiet alone time. You deserve it!!
ReplyDeleteI never thought of writing a comment on a page called; it's hard to see your true love take a different direction, hi everyone my name is maria luke I've been married for 20 years and one day my husband told me he couldn't continue our marriage because he had seen another woman decide to ask for help and to find someone with my similar story online, how his marriage was restored and I feel that this will change my story, I live happily with my husband, just like when we get married, we strengthen our love for each other and I also discover that my husband had a negative influence, I am very grateful to this person for the help, if you need support., Whatsapp +23490) 6157) 0504) etc.
