The Internet.
I'm still learning all the lingo. Some of it baffles me.
Here are a few that I still don't get.
1. When people write "this guy" or "this girl" with a photo and leave it at that. I think it's to show that they love the person, but I always want to type, "What about this guy? What about this girl? Please explain."
2. Abbreviations. For the longest time, I thought FTW meant "f*ck the world." I mean, it made sense. A lot of people just use F for the word f*ck because it offends people. (WTF, for example.) Don't worry, I learned that it meant for the win, though it still doesn't make sense. So I'd say, "We're having ice cream for dinner. FTW." Yes? Or no? I still don't understand when you'd use that or why.
3. I've ranted about this before on Things That Annoy Me Thursday. But seriously, why do people ask a question and then finish it with "AND GO!" I'll go. Literally. Without answering, because I find it obnoxious. Just ask your question and leave it at that. Don't say, "Best Italian places? AND GO!" Just say, "Best Italian places?" and I swear, everyone will comprehend that you want us to answer. I promise.
4. I still hate the word selfie. I'm sorry, but why can't we just go, "Taking photos!" I see it's of you. It's perfectly acceptable to just call them pictures. Or self-portraits, if you wish. But selfie makes me think of a child. Instantly. I just can't take a photo seriously with the word "SELFIE!" I immediately picture a tween.
5. It cracks me up when I see the same people post daily photos of themselves in their vehicles. It's you in the car. Again! Let's mix it up and do an outdoor photo, please. And guys? Some photos don't need to be so close. If I can see your pores, it frightens me.

So what baffles you about the World Wide Web?

Selfies baffle me like I told you. Also internet memes like FML (F**k my life) or YOLO (you only live once - no kidding? That's why you gotta do stupid and possibly risky things, and then tell the world about it?)
ReplyDeleteHahaha! Nicely said! That is why I only do blogger and nothing else!!
ReplyDeleteI hate the "this guy" thing too... and also when people say "I can't" or "I can't even"... I get what they mean, but it drives me nuts!
ReplyDeleteI was pretty sure that SMH meant so much hate. It actually means shaking my head.
ReplyDeleteGuys with pictures posing in front of a mirror with their shirts off all the time...why?
ReplyDeletePeople that take pictures with their tongue sticking out...why?
HA HA HA HA!! I hate selfies, too. And my hubby loves them...especially in his car, so this totally made me giggle!-Ashley
ReplyDeleteYou totally just taught me what FTW means! I had no idea. I was also clueless about SMH - I thought it was some sort of abbreviation for stay-mom-home? I don't know.
ReplyDeleteMy "trigger spots" are emotional posts....like "I just can't today. I can't." Or when someone posts love notes to their significant other...save that shit for letters, personal messages, and phone calls, nobody needs to see all your lovenothings. Drives me crazy.
Till this day, I do not think I have taken even one selfie test. I do not see why folks would be interested in what I am doing. I'd rather share content and other information that I feel is valuable.
ReplyDelete#2 means both depending on the situation, but I'm not always good at figuring out which one the poster meant. Also, I know that LOL means "laugh out loud" but it really did used to mean "lots of love" and I still see it that way sometimes.
ReplyDeletefuck the world hahahahahah!!! that also makes sense/applies to a lot of situations if you really think about it.
ReplyDeletefor the longest time, i had no idea what #byefelicia meant. i thought there was a blogger named felicia whom everyone hated because she did some kind of blogger faux pas that enraged the blogosphere! LOL

Vodka and Soda
I don't get the FTW thing either. How does eating ice cream get you to win? Were you not winning before?
ReplyDeleteHaha. Being close enough to see pores is definitely not necessary. And, I have no idea what FTW means so there's that.
ReplyDeleteThe only time I want to see a photo of someone in a car is if someone else is in it or if they're stuck in there.
ReplyDeleteThis guy drives me nuts.
I had no idea what FTW meant - good to know!!!
ReplyDeleteI must not peruse the internet often enough, I have never seen a #1. I am guilty of using a lot of #2's, and iirc I learned 90% of them while playing a MMO (iirc = if I remember correctly, MMO = Massive Multiplayer On-line). When I run across a And GO, I usually do, right to the next web tab I have, all whilst closing the one I was on. There's only 1 selfie I really want to see, and it isn't of anyone but my wife... I'll leave the rest of that statement to your imagination. The only thing a picture of a person in a car is going to do for me is irritate me to no end, I wanna be driving too!

ReplyDeleteDefinitely some good points and I didn't know what FTW meant either. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI always get a kick out of what annoys you, often times I don't think about what annoys me until you say it, and then I'm like- YEAH ME TOO!
ReplyDeleteFTW? I hadn't hear of that one before. lol "And GO!" bugs me. I feel old when I see things like, "blah blah is everything!"
LOL about FTW! I didn't know what SMH meant for the longest time.
ReplyDeleteI'm guilty of some of these though in moderation, it's ok, right? :). People and their short, complete, but still annoying sentences like "this" or "FTW". Ugh. What are you winning, exactly?
ReplyDeleteI love your "what annoys me on the internet" posts. They always make me smile.
ReplyDeleteWell I think you know how I feel about the word "selfie." I say, "self portrait"! And how.
ReplyDeleteAlso, in regards to "this guy" or "this girl", I don't like when they say, "Someone is sleepy!" and post a photo of their kid sleeping. I don't like the use of the word "someone" even though I'm sure I've used it myself. Like a lot.
Lastly.. and with your last point, I have friends who post SELF PORTRAITS of themselves multiple times a day. It's.. weird. What does that say about you if you are doing that? And they're always trying to look mysterious and there's no point to it. No new haircut or new hair color or new outfit. Just five self portraits a day.
It took me forever to figure out FTW too...LOL
ReplyDeleteI'm clueless about what a lot of the abbreviations mean. I'll catch on one day...
ReplyDeleteHahaha F@#ck the world. Too funny. I too get so confused with acronyms and teen lingo these days...and when people actually SAY "hashtag" no...just noooo...
ReplyDeleteI don't get the abbreviations, but I like your version. Selfies - no. I hate even coming up with a profile picture, I sure as hell am not going to selfie myself all over the place. I don't like trolls on the internet. People who just leave comments to stir up trouble. They have nothing more interesting going on in their lives?
ReplyDeleteFor example, if I posted a screenshot of that time in Captain America The Winter Soldier Chris Evans was just wearing a white tank top showing his biceps and blue jeans, I would caption it "This Guy" ... meaning: holy crap asskjdhjendsg!
ReplyDeleteand also "Marvel Wardrobe Department FTW" ...meaning throw all the Oscar costume awards at the Marvel wardrobe people who dressed him like that.
make sense?
ack - maybe not. but still, Chris Evans in a tight tank top! :)
The entire internet and everything on it perplexes me :)!
ReplyDeleteBahaha. Love that last one. It kills me when people post tons of pictures of themselves in the car. Don't care. Okay, thanks.
ReplyDeleteI definitely use FTW and maybe it makes no sense but it's fun and it's basically the only internet lingo I use.
ReplyDeleteI hate the word selfie, I hate taking selfies, and some people need to take a class on how to take good one (and how to tone down the quantity).
I cannot stand the expression "LOL". It drives me nuts.
I don't know what FTW means. I would have thought it meant FK the world! But since you said its not that.. the next thing I can think of is... Forward The Word? That doesn't make sense.
ReplyDeleteOh, does FTW mean For The Win? Who says that?
ReplyDeleteI used to be offended with LOL. When I first saw it, it looked like two legs and a vagina in the middle.
ReplyDeleteHaha! I have yet to take a "selfie". Although I am considering taking a picture of my foot and posting at as my first selfie with the words, "Comments on this girl... Now Go!!".
ReplyDelete#1 - I think it's just a shortening of, this guy is so great, I love him, so it becomes this guy.
ReplyDelete#2 - I try to figure out those irritating words too, older people think lol is lots of love and to them it does mean that, to a different generation it's laugh out loud. In the grand scheme of things, who cares!
#3 - don't people say that when they're asking a question and want answers, or it's a game isn't it. You ask the question and basically tell the people to 'go' by telling their answer.
#4 - I find it funny when people talk about selfies yet the photo is clearly a photo because it wasn't taken by the person themselves. If it's taken by you it's a selfie, if it's taken by someone else, it's a bloody photo.
#5 - I'm also sick of food and animal pics as well as the same pic of your damn living room simply because you changed something or added a book to your bloody coffee table.
I really, really detest the word TOTES. Arghhhhhh... Makes me want to vomit.
ReplyDeleteThese are great! I am not a fan of the selfie either!
ReplyDeleteSelfie - second only to the work "ussie" - have you heard it? It refers to a selfie containing multiple people. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteIt took me forever to know "FTW" too! I thought similarly! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah.. being in the health/fitness blogging world, there are soo many post-gym selfies in the car. Or post-race selfies. Or mid-workout selfies. And okay, I may have been guilty of a flexing selfie or two in my day, but no one needs to see that after every workout!
I actually haven't seen the "this guy" or "this girl" thing before...that I can remember anyway. And I do hate the world selfie. It's a photo, taken of yourself. Not inherently a bad thing, but it doesn't need a cutesie nickname.
ReplyDeleteI hate the FML stuff. Because it can always be worse, and it's always something petty that they're bitching about.
ReplyDeleteFTW is a gaming thing. At least, that's where it started.
And I can't stand the people who take selfies every day of their workout to show you their progress. I CAN'T SEE A DIFFERENCE!
