It's never fun when your spouse has to deploy. I try to do things to keep my mind off the fact that he's gone. It helps.
1. Rearrange stuff. This is probably confusing to Tom when he returns. He's all, "Did you hang up new stuff?" or, "What happened to my things?"
2. Watch a lot of reality TV. Tom isn't a fan of reality TV. He goes on a rant on how it's not reality at all. He freaks out over the appearance of some women. "Who would puff their lips up like that? Yuck. Why is her face so tight? Gross." It makes it hard to concentrate on why one housewife is screaming at another.
3. Talk to him daily. Or try to. Sometimes he's busy. He's not there on vacation, after all. We try to always touch base if possible.
4. Have dance sessions. It helps to blast music. Sometimes I'll put "You Can't Always Get What You Want" from The Rolling Stones when Natalie is being obstinate. This insults her. This song should also be blasted around Kanye West.
5. Read. Books make me incredibly happy.
6. Fart freely. I mean, I fart in front of my husband, but I try not to go too crazy. I don't want to totally freak him out.
7. Write. I love to write stories. In fact, I self-published The Swimmer's Assistant. I'm working on finding an agent for my other books. If it doesn't work out, I'll self-publish those too.
These are just some of the things that help keep me sane until he comes home again.
If your other half has gone away before, what do you do to help keep your spirits up?

When my husband is gone, I go eat sushi. He is allergic to fish, so I keep it out of the house when he's home. I also eat in bed, lol. Terrible.
ReplyDeleteReading will always be my go-to!
ReplyDelete#6 is pretty great!
ReplyDeleteCassidy never goes away for long but when he does, I eat junk food and watch Hallmark movies.
So nice that you get to talk to him almost daily! That must make it just a little easier :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post! My husband isn't military and doesn't go out of town very often, but when he does I definitely watch way more TV than I should :)
ReplyDeleteI fart with abandon whether the husband is home or not. Don't even care.
ReplyDeleteIt's great you get to talk to him every day. And read. And write stories.
Ha ha such a good list. No joke I have never farted in front of my husband... ever... unless it was a sleep fart, in that case though it just doesn't count lol
ReplyDeleteMy husband's leaving in about 30 minutes to go out of town for two days. When it's for that short a period of time, you enjoy it. However, longer time periods would be tough. My heart goes out to you! The extent of my knowledge about the military comes from watching the first couple of seasons of Army Wives!
ReplyDeleteThese are all great things to help keep your sanity! However, I totally fart in front of my husband, multiple times a day. We are all pretty gassy and we all think it's HILARIOUS! We are such a mature family!
ReplyDeleteMy son is in the Middle East right now. I'm glad to hear you've got coping methods to get you through deployment.
ReplyDeleteLaughing at "you can't always get what you want!"
ReplyDeleteI'm binge-watching House and he said that to Cutty (Cuddy? Whoever his boss is) and later in that episode, she says "It turns out that if you try sometimes, you get what you need." It cracked me up.
When my husband is gone, I enjoy not having to make dinner. The boys are never too happy about this turn of events, but too bad for them :)! Hope your husband will be home soon.
ReplyDeleteI watch a lot of reality TV during deployment too. And I clean a lot. Which really should be reversed since he appreciates me cleaning and all ;)
ReplyDeleteI sing the same song to my kids when they whine about not getting what they want. They hate it!
ReplyDeleteI'm still waiting for your book to come out on Nook! I don't have a kindle and my phone doesn't have enough memory to download the kindle app!
ReplyDeleteI rearrange furniture as well. I also watch as mant "chick" flicks as I can, and I take on some sort of house project.... usually something he hadn't gotten to yet!
ReplyDeleteFart freely.... Hahahah!
ReplyDeleteNumber four made me laugh super hard. Haha.
