Why I Won't Be Entertaining My Kids During Summer Break

Summer break is nearly here. I currently work from home with my two kids. They do get bored. But I don't plan on entertaining them on a daily basis. I was talking to one mother who said she had to have an activity planned each day or else "her kids would drive her bonkers." My kids can drive me bonkers too, but guess what? They're old enough to entertain themselves. We do have some trips planned but for the most part, we'll be at home.

Here's why I won't be entertaining my kids every day during summer break:

1. There's this magical place called "outside." Vitamin D lives there. Go play.

2. Don't you have devices to mess around with? You know, the ones you "had" to have for Christmas? Go watch a video on YouTube and learn about something.

3. Um, your room is filled with these things called TOYS. The teenager, not so much. The tween? Yes. Roblox. Dolls. Makeup. Pick something.

4. The house is filled with books. Read one. Go on an adventure.

5. There are board games crammed in various closets. Maybe I'll play with you. Maybe I won't. Ask your brother/sister. Ask the cat.

6. Watch TV. I know the experts say not to, but I'm saying it's fine. No one in the family is obese. We're good.

7. Something can always be cleaned. Bored? Here's some Windex. Go scrub the windows. Thanks.

8. Mommy doesn't like many other people. She's an introvert so no, she won't be taking you to the trampoline place. Go bounce on your bed for a bit. Or we have the trampoline in the backyard.

9. Follow this realistic summer bucket list please:

Look, we'll go some places. We'll see some movies. We'll go to some parks. We'll check out some museums. Maybe we'll bowl. But it won't be an everyday thing. My parents live about 45 minutes away so the kids will get pool time once in a while:

But most days? We'll be at home.

  1. HAHA I love this! I can't do things with my kids every day. Who even WANTS to do that?! 1) It's expensive and 2) Even the kids wouldn't want to go out every single day. We'll visit parks and a museum, maybe see a movie. My grandparents have a pool on site where they live and to be honest, I'd rather read haha. GREAT POST!

  2. Haha this is awesome! #1 is the best!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Lmao. Vitamin D.
My mom was same! She had her own business so guess where I spent summer? In front of a tv in the lounge! And when I got older, she put me to work! Ugh! Lol

    ReplyDelete
  4. lol number 7 was my moms favorite. Always cured my boredom right away.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Ugh, #7 always got me. "Nevermind, Mom, I'm actually not bored... I uhh found something to do that I hadn't thought of two minutes ago!"

    ReplyDelete
  6. Haha! This is hilarious. I'm glad to see some realness on the internet about kids and summers. The realistic bucket list is my favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  7. That realistic bucket list is awesome.

We often go to the pool in the summer- because we've figured out when to go when it's not crowded. We will bowl some (kids bowl free- yay!), a movie or two, some other outings... but I definitely don't feel like I have to keep them going and entertained all the time. And if we're home: they're on their own. Figure out what to do that doesn't drive me bonkers.

    ReplyDelete
  8. LOL---realistic summer bucket list! LOVE it! I totally believe in kids being self-entertaining too. I'm definitely not on the entertainment committee here either.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Good stuff! It's important to have down time and to be ok entertaining yourself. I think your kids will have good summer :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. I am so down with this plan. I only plan to be out of the house once, maybe twice a week --- and that doesn't include beach trips because the beach is only 10 minutes away and mama LOVES the beach. So that's a win for me. All other spaces and places shall be limited as per my tolerance level. This is why I love camping... no one bothers you and they swim ALL day and fall asleep 10 minutes after the bonfire is lit. Yes kiddos, stare into the flames. ha.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'm so down with you! It's a valuable lesson to learn as well, how to be more independent! I used to love summer as kid, aside from swim practice, we'd run around with the other kids creating forts and picking wild raspberries. I miss those days!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Abso-freaking-lutely! I was not put on this earth to entertain you.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Go bounce on your bed...hilarious! My kids are younger, but I still am not providing constant entertainment for them everyday. We don't have that much extra money, and I've still got the same things to do, such as housework, blog work, and non-kid related things.

    ReplyDelete
  14. AMEN. My oldest is really good at entertaining herself right now. Thank heavens. I've never been and probably never will be the mom that does a bunch of fun things every day of the week. A few days? Sure... but not every!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I wish I could do this too! Actually my kids are getting so much better at entertaining themselves. But they still like me to take them "fun" places every day.

    ReplyDelete
  16. This would totally be my plan if I were home. It's pretty much what we do on evenings and weekends anyway. We go a few places, but for the most part, I'm not trying to stress out about things.

    ReplyDelete
  17. A good old-fashioned summer. With the exception of camps and trips - family to Cape Cod, just the two of us to Alaska, just me to NYC - we shall have some lazy days of self-entertaining!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh my God! This made my night! I can't stop laughing! I work all summer so it doesn't make a difference to me. But my mother in law will get a kick out of this! I love #7 about the windex! I don't think I'd trust Emily with it yet but she definitely can help with cleaning

    ReplyDelete
  19. I completely agree! It is there time to relax as well.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yessssss. Thank you for this post. I was never entertained for during summer break, so I don't understand why parents feel the need to put on a show every single day for their kids...

  22. I love this. I won't (and didn't) entertain my kid for the summer. He had a list of things to do just like your kids. Play outside. Take the dog. We did special things like the beach or the amusement park once during the summer but for the most part, we were at home.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I hear ya. I have some stuff planned, but not every minute of every day. They can go outside and play like I did when I was a kid.

    ReplyDelete
  24. So many kids seem interested to be glued to phones or tablets, fresh air never hurt anyone!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yes, Amber! I was left to my own devices during break, but I remember having a few kids my age who's parents planned every single day for them.. It seemed a little too "micro-manage-y" to me. I'd usually go outside and play, but on the occasion I followed mum around complaining I was bored, she'd tell me to clean my room, after which I swiftly found something to entertain myself haha.

  26. this was so entraining and totally loved this. I was never entertained for during summer break, my mom just expected us to be kids. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  27. This is super hilarious. Looks like you'll have an amazing summer time with your kids..enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  28. We sent our kid to a martial arts school on her summer vacation. She enjoys it too much that she's going to continue doing it for the rest of the year or so.

    ReplyDelete
  29. "Ask the cat." Hahahaha! You are one wonderful mom, and I'm sure your kids will have an awesome summer even without daily trips to somewhere else.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Omg how hilarious! Vitamin D us definately a must have so I guess the play ground will be the entertainment destination for most of the time.loved thus post

  32. Hilarious this is! Taking care of children and being with them is fine but eventually they need to learn to enjoy their own company. Amazing post , also you've given so many ideas which children can do without their mother. All the ways to enjoy summer vacations given in the post are safe and fun.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Loved this post! Kids need to understand that entertaining them cannot be a daily affair once they have attained a certain age! Loved all the points & hopefully I too come in this age bracket soon.. My kid is 2.8years old & I have no option other than entertaining him;)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I do believe I'm going to channel you for the rest of the summer. My grandkids are a handful at times and I hear I'm bored more than anything. Despite having tons to do here.

    ReplyDelete
  35. This is so hilarious I couldn't stop laughing. I like #7 & #9 the most. I'm introvert too so I'll be borrowing this tip when summer gets too long. Thanks Amber!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Haha Magical place yes it is. You're an awesome mother of awesome kids. It's valuable lesson for kids as well.

    ReplyDelete
  37. My girls are 2 and 5 so I gotta keep them busy or else they go crazy. But entertaining them is as simple as letting them go outside and run around until they get tired. We do have a family trip to Universal Studios planned for my daughters birthday though! :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think its unrealistic to go somewhere everyday. They need to learn to entertain themselves

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think kids are over scheduled these days. They need time to just be a kid. Getting bored can be a good thing. Kids need to learn how to entertain themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yes! I love how you tell it like it is! You are completely right, plus what happened to going outside and playing? Love you posts, you always make me chuckle :)

  42. Such great list on what things can be done by the kids. I love how you give them the independence and at the same time responsibility while they are enjoying. - ANOSA

  43. Vitamin D is a great thing. And this is a great list. It gives your kids all kinds of opportunities to be creative in their lives. That's important I think.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I love the scrubbing part. This way vacations can be fun for you as well.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I remember as a kid if the sun was out, so were we! I second not constantly entertaining kids during the summer!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hahaha this list cracked me up. I love your perspective and how they simple things can actually make a difference, especially spending time in the sun and playing outdoors.

  47. This is so great. I remember when I was a nannying full time and the parents wanted the kids and I to go out EVERY day. I was literally so exhausted and the kids were over it within like 2 weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  48. This is great! I especially like the outdoors idea since kids these days seem to only get outdoor time when in school from my experience. Vitamin D will be good for them :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. There's too much pressure that we give to ourselves during summer vacation, I don't think it's fair. We go on a trip for 2 weeks tops and that's the whole plan for the summer. Other than that, we stay at home.

    ReplyDelete
  50. This is so funny!I do understand where you are coming from. You need not plan daily activities for them, especially since they are big enough to entertain themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  51. LOL! This post is so funny! I don't have kids of my own but can totally understand where you're coming from. Sometimes kids like it when they can just entertain themselves though -- I know I did when I was younger! I actually enjoyed doing my own thing rather than having my parents plan everything out for me especially during my summer breaks :) xo, sharon

  52. I dont remember my Mom entertained us during summer break, because she knows we can entertain ourselves :) Summer is great coz its the time we bond together as family.. Even just doing nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hahaha! I haven't stopped laughing at this post... written and spoken like a true mom.

    ReplyDelete
  54. this content is so funny reminds me of my childhood. You will save money doing that!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Those are my exact words every summer. I’ve made a list of things they have to do before saying they’re bored

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hahaha I totally love this, there is plenty of vitamin d outside go explore and make it an adventure

    ReplyDelete
  57. When I have kids and summer break hits - I am goingto make sure my future kids are signed up for camp and activities all summer long. When I was a kid I was signed up for camps and summer schools (even abroad) and while back then I just wanted to hang out at home and do nothing - I appreciate it so much now because these experiences really shaped who I am!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I couldn't even think about doing something every day it would just be too much - sometimes doing nothing teaches you a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I don't even have to tell my kids to go outside - mine love it. I usually have to drag them in to eat lol.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I LOVE this! My kids are a bit younger, but I am still not entertaining them all day! Like mommy needs to work, so you need to go play outside!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Good for you. Chores need done. Neighbor needs help. Aren’t spending their summer being driven here and there. Home is just fine

    ReplyDelete
  62. I have never entertained my kids! My momma didn't entertain me, so I'm following in her foot steps, lol. It's the best way to go!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I'm all for the kiddos going outside. Thankful that we have parks and basketball courts near our home. Hoping to get a pass to our community pool this summer as well.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I love this blog post. I think your bucket list is way more realistic than most. There is plenty to do outside. and #7 was also my moms favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  65. awww, reminds me of my childhood. haha fresh air is good for everyone. thank you for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  66. my daughter and I loves reading book so much. We can just cuddle and read books.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I love these tips, there really is a lot to do for the summer break, like reading which I would prefer for my kid. Also the bucket list is a good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I didn't entertain my kids a lot during the summer. Somehow they always found something to occupy themselves with.

    ReplyDelete
  69. We stayed home in the summers most of the time and I remember summers being the absolute best! The picture of the kids w/the list is funny. :)

    ReplyDelete
  70. Oh my! I can so relate! Thankfully my kids are older now and they do a pretty good job of entertaining themselves:)

    ReplyDelete
  71. This is so funny. I love these tips. This way vacations can be fun for you as well. Thanks for sharing this.

    ReplyDelete
  72. That is where vitamin d live....hahahah I laughed so hard at this! Tooo funny!

    ReplyDelete
  73. You're a great mom. Atleast you let the kids do what they want some would limit their kids for some reason, but they won't grow on their own if you don't let them. So, you're doing a good job!

    ReplyDelete
  74. I am loudly clapping at this post. I am not a mom but my 13 yr old nephew has came around and I am also seeing my 10 year old niece and they are so BORING. Its like you have to figure out things to do, when I was a kid I had to entertain myself MAKE them get creative.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I am without you in all of these points. Ask the cat, makes me giggle though. We have a lot of things to entertain them at home and outside so no need to plan everyday.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Yes Yes Yes! My little one isn't in school yet but I try to follow this everyday! Number 1 is the truuuuth! haha

    ReplyDelete
  77. This is such a cool way to indulge kids in activities other than summmer camps. I totally would do this too for my kids. Thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Haha "ask the cat"! I remember I hate it when my parents tried to make plans for me during summer. I loved having my own time and planning my own days.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yep, I feel the same. I am excited for my kids to be able to go outside play and be kids for 2 months. - Jeanine

    ReplyDelete
  80. It really helps that your kids are amazing! Summer breaks are always fun.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I am with you there girl. I am not there entertainment this summer either!

    ReplyDelete
  82. What a cool post! I totally understand, with them and you home they will forget they have legs! "Mom pass me the remote." "Can you bring me my phone?" "No, I love you but--no I will not." Haha. Thank for sharing! :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. This is great! I have two daughters with a six year age gap so we always have two of polar opposite things happening in our home. It's going to be a long summer!

    ReplyDelete
  84. I'm not a parent but I remember volunteering at a kid's camp and it could be fun but overwhelming to entertain a group of kids. Plus I always found that if you let find their own fun then they're usually the most happiest.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I learnt early on not to burn myself (and the kids) out during the holidays. A school week is full on enough. Its nice to be at home some days and do things there !

    ReplyDelete
  86. I have 5 kids and I work from home so there is no way I will be entertaining them all summer every day. We have a couple weekend away trips planned but the rest of the summer there are no plans here either

    ReplyDelete
  87. Lmao, this was great and so true. I love the devices one, that about sums up my kids as well,

    ReplyDelete
  88. I definitely want to invest in my child the ability to do things on their own. And giving her the freedom to do her own things this summer is an important step in personal growth.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Now is the summer holiday and we are travelling out of the city. Usually we travel to spend one or two night in a villa out of the city. The rest of my daughters'holiday is up to them. I try to give them a new learning activities by giving the recipes to try, or a new skill for example riding the bicycle.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I'm so thankful for our family swimming pool. My kids are just entertained with it all summer, although we do have planned trips and activities for them. :)

    ReplyDelete
  91. I totally understand the sentiment of not entertaining the kids. Kids are pretty good at keeping themselves entertained for the most part. These are great tips.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I don't entertain my kiddos either. We do plan a few fun filled days and that is it.

    ReplyDelete

  93. I can say that despite the adult age I still appreciate, perhaps more, the time spent with my mother during the summer, a moment in which to meet and live experiences that will remain indelible memories forever ... especially the simplest and most true ...

    ReplyDelete
  94. I remember summers as a kid and it was always, "Go outside and play, I don't want to see you till dinner." And we just found things to do. That's how it should be!

    ReplyDelete
  95. I think kids need to learn to entertain them subs. Sometimes they do need to be more just to learn how to have patience. We do have a lot planned This summer actually almost all happen by accident LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  96. You are really keeping it real. Kids need to have their own fun and activities. You are funny and we all should take your lead and stop coddling our kids so much.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I share your sentiments. I love that you said, go outside. Vitamin D lives there. Ha! I need that advice for myself!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Amen!!! I agree with you. My son usually goes to his dads but he wants to stay home this summer. Sir...play your Xbox and leave me ALONE!

    ReplyDelete
  99. I agree! My son is a little older now. He typically does well with staying active and going outside.

    ReplyDelete
  100. The picture of your kids with that summer bucket list cracks me up. The faces! Priceless. As a former kid, I can say that I had to entertain myself, and it is possible!

    ReplyDelete
  101. We were fortunate to have a community pool when mine were teens. Since I also signed them up for the swim team, they got up at 5 am for swim practice and then hung out at the pool with friends until lunchtime. After lunch they rode bikes, played ball with the neighborhood kids, or otherwise entertained themselves. Just like I did as a teen.

    ReplyDelete
  102. We have a Disney invite so that will take care of that. We will hit the beach which is not too far. Summer vacation doesn't have to be hectic. This is good.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Hahaha, love the comedic side of this post. Made a traditionally boring concept very entertaining.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I think kids nowadays should take advantage of outdoor activities. It has tons of benefits for them. I think what you are doing is entirely correct.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Yep, we live in a world where many children complain that they are bored. My preference is to give them a project for the summer, like learning to play the violin or do a major spring clean of your room.

    ReplyDelete
  106. It is hard to find things to do with kids everyday but I look at it as these days are numbered and I am glad to have the time I do. It can be hard to always do something together but the guilt gets me Everytime i try to be strong. Haha

    ReplyDelete
  107. I completely agree with you on this. There is so much for kids to do. Mine are in summer school this summer, so they'll be keeping busy. They've got lots of outdoor activities they can do, so they have no reason to get bored.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I love this realistic bucket list! Like you, I planned a few trips during the summer for my family, but mostly my kids entertained themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I LOVE your honesty! i am right there with you. I can not entertain my children all summer long. There is plenty of things to do at home. The question is...will I survive?

    ReplyDelete
  110. I am absolutely living this life. If we do go places a couple afternoons a week that I don't have to work, it will be a friend's backyard or a pool that is completely already paid for and where I can sit and read.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Couldn't agree more with ya, mama! Especially on the book front - the best part about my summer vacations as a kid was reading all the books I wanted to.

    ReplyDelete
  112. They are at the age where they can really occupy themselves too. They are such good kids.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Absolutely love this!!! Thanks for your honesty! I often feel guilty if I ignore my kids during summer break. I ended up paying a lot for summer camps.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I know what are you talking about. I can't entertain daily my kids, too!

    ReplyDelete
  115. I don't have kids yet but I totally understand this since my sister has a daughter. I know it's quite tough for her but she's doing it pretty well.

    ReplyDelete
  116. LOL. Same here, I won't be entertaining my son because he's already a teen and he knows how to entertain himself already. :)

    -Lynndee

    ReplyDelete
  117. Yes absolutely! I can't agree more with you, kids have tons to do and have fun. Have yourself an amazing summer.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I totally agree. And kids just need to learn how to entertain themselves or figure out things to do. I feel like it can be harder with my second child since she is always around other kids and is less able to entertain herself.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I'm so with you on this! When I was a kid - we self entertained, and now they want us to constantly keep the kids engaged - it's OKAY TO BE BORED! There are things to do if you try

    ReplyDelete
  120. Haha! This is awesome! There’s no way someone can have something planned for every day! Lol We are on day 3 of summer break and my boys have enjoyed playing outside, playing with legos, watching a few movies at home

    ReplyDelete
  121. This post brought back a lot of me more of when my kids were young and in school. Bored was their favorite word, lol. I believe kids should use their imagination during play so we also had a lot of toys but they'd still complain. Good luck to you this summer.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I don't remember my mom ever doing anything to entertain us during the summer... Your kids will be fine!

    ReplyDelete
  123. I have goals that I want to reach, like try out a new walking trail, but realistically, we'll probably stay home most day, and hey! They house could always be cleaned.

    ReplyDelete
  124. So I don't agree but it is ok. We can agree to disagree :-) We are all about summer bucket lists, making memories that will last us a lifetime! Realistic bucket list I should say.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I love this idea because it helps teach children to be self-sufficient and to utilise their imaginations. We tend to put such a strong focus on doing awesome activities over the summer but then when they go back to school, what about the children who's families couldn't afford to do anything? Does that make their summer any less special...nope!

    ReplyDelete
  126. This is definitely the real bucket list, not all the time your mom will be around to entertain you. We also have to learn how to do it ourselves. Number 1 is my pick.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I love all of these realistic reason why you wont be entertaining your kids this summer. I will say social media is making it hard for parents to prove the kids are just always busy and going out of town or doing amazing things with their kids, but sometimes its simple -let them play outside - everything doesnt have to be an adventure.
