Soon after it aired, it was discovered that over 20 million people tuned in. I mean, duh. AND it was renewed for a second season. (It airs on Tuesdays at 7/8 eastern on ABC and I find a lot of reruns on the TVLand channel.)
Why is Roseanne still so popular? Well, I have some ideas.
1. The family talks openly about being poor.
They're lower middle class, and many live the same way. People struggle with their bills, struggle to get medication, and struggle in general. It bugs me when I see shows where the people complain about having no money, yet they have a nice home with nice decor, and drive around in a vehicle that looks new. It's not realistic. Roseanne is realistic.
2. The show isn't afraid to go there. Remember that episode where DJ doesn't want to kiss a black girl in the school play?
Well, guess what? In the revival, DJ MARRIED that girl and they have a daughter.
3. It's probably how parenting goes for people 90% of the time.
I know there are some who like to hide behind perfection. They'll show photos of their immaculate homes, state they only give their children organic food, and say that they've never yelled at their kids, not ONCE, because it's so so damaging. Roseanne yelled. Roseanne fed her kids fried food. Roseanne's home is NOT immaculate. But not many want to admit it. (I will! I yell, we eat fried food, and my home will never be immaculate.)
4. Dan and Roseanne still love each other.
5. It talks about real issues and through it all, the family truly loves each other.
Remember that first episode where Mark likes to wear dresses in the reboot? He identifies as a boy, but he just likes colorful clothing. Dan isn't a fan at first, but then realizes that his grandson likes to wear those things, and that's he's a strong kid for doing so. Plus, I'm all for being a weird family.
(Fun fact, Tim Curry was in the original and Tim Curry is EVERYTHING.)
So do you watch Roseanne?
I have heard so much controversy over the new version but I have to give it a try. I'm excited to see if it is as good as the original series, which by the way is one of my favorite shows of all time.
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched the new one yet (I've been a little hesitant because of some non-show related things), but I loved watching it as a kid with my mom so I may give it a try!
ReplyDeleteFrom the ratings they haven't lost their touch with us common people who struggle day in and day out. They touch on all the issues and have weird family members like we all have.
ReplyDeleteI've been enjoying the reboot, and I'm glad it's back. I got a chance to talk to the original cast and it made me fall in love with the show even more.
ReplyDeleteWell you know how I feel about Tim Curry.
ReplyDeleteI didn't see it a lot as a kid but I'll tune in. Especially to see the girl DJ married! And I love that Darlene/David scene!!
I have never been a fan of Roseanne, maybe because it was before my time? But I have heard great things about the reboot! Some of my coworkers begged me to give it a try!
ReplyDeleteI used to watch this show but I haven't checked it out this time around yet. I will, I though because I'm certain I will love it every bit as much as I used to.
ReplyDeleteWe used to watch the old Roseanne sitcom when it was on, and even the reruns. It's just a well written show. I think it resonates with a lot of people, because they see themselves as that family. The reboot was funny.
ReplyDeleteI forgot that it came on a couple nights ago. I am curious about seeing what they kept the same and what is different.
ReplyDeleteHaven't watched this yet and I don't even know why looks like something I would really enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI meant to watch it last week and then I meant to watch it this week but I missed it both times. I do like that Sara Gilbert is directing/producing and I intend to catch up on it one day before the season ends.
ReplyDeleteThe Roseanne show brings back so many fun childhood memories. I'm so happy for them and the show's success so far.
ReplyDeleteNever watch Roseanne. I had actually never heard of the show. I feel so ignorant. Not sure we had it when i was younger. Sounds like a great show though
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched it yet, but your post got me curious to check it. Since it's being on air for such a long time, must be a good one.
ReplyDeleteThat first picture about only getting one final notice is so funny and so true for how I grew up! My family loved the original show because we could relate to it so much, we were in the same situation and it felt nice to laugh at ourselves.
ReplyDeleteI loved Roseanne growing up. I haven't seen the new one yet and totally forgot they were making it.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have cable so I'll need to check on Hulu for it. I hope it's on there.
Thanks!!
I haven't watched it yet, but I did watch the old Roseanne series. I think to much of it reminds me of a bad childhood...so not sure I want to dig up some of those thoughts, but there is a reason this show is so popular. The blatant truths about people's home lives allow people to share more of the real stuff and be more free.
ReplyDeleteI watched RoseAnne as a kid and I have to say it has that same feel. I'll be watching the rest of the season!
ReplyDeleteI used to watch it as a kid and loved it. Would definitely see the revival once I find some time! And yes, your reasons for why Roseanne is a hit is spot on!
ReplyDeleteI loved the original show too. But I have to say that after watching just half of the new version I had to turn it off. Not my cup of tea.
ReplyDeleteSeems like it's good and humorous shows. Not at all stereotype
ReplyDeleteIf we still have cable, I would definitely watch this. It's the programs that shows so much garbage that made me decide to unplug.
ReplyDeleteI never heard of this show before but it seems really cool!
ReplyDeleteI really want to watch the new episodes. I saw an old episode that was on TV this week and it looked so old! Time flies!
ReplyDeleteIt's a great show and I just appreciate how real it is. It's good to have them back and I can't wait to watch more!
ReplyDeleteI have not watched Roseanne, but reading through the post my interest was piqued. Especially because of the honest and frank approach of the show. Will catch up on the show.
ReplyDeleteI have to respectfully disagree with you. When a show shows a grandma calling her granddaughter a bitch and then putting her head under the faucet, it's just something that I can't support or watch.
ReplyDeleteI have not watched this yet, but I have it on the PVR to watch. I am going to have to check it out.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen this in so long! I forgot it was coming back on TV. I haven't had a chance to see it yet!
ReplyDeleteWe watched one episode of the show. We hope it gets a little better. Sometimes it's hard to pick back up after years!
ReplyDeleteI have heard so much about this show. I actually never saw the original! Fun to bring back a show after so many years.
ReplyDeleteI haven’t seen the reboot yet, but this is 100% on point. I loved Roseanne as a kid for all of these reasons.
ReplyDeleteI remember watching bits of Roseanne when I was younger, I'm looking forward to perhaps seeing the reboot and seeing what happens.
ReplyDeleteI didn't catch the recent episode, but I did hear it was a hit. And yes, Tim Curry is EVERYTHING!
ReplyDeleteI never saw this show. But after reading this post I know I would like it.
ReplyDeleteI remember this TV show it was my mom and I'd favorite thing to watch in the mornings! It brings back many memories. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLol.. I don't think I saw the show with Tim Curry in the original. I will have to find that episode. Yes, I agree there are so many amazing things about Roseanne. Being open in one of them.
ReplyDeleteTim Curry is everything, and I had no idea he was in the original show!
