So, my daughter got to take care of a guinea pig named Speedy during Winter Break. She fell in love with Speedy and asked if she could have a guinea pig. I said sure, but she had to get her grades up. It's not that she's a terrible student; it's that she can get lazy with studying. Math is a perplexing subject for her: she goes into tutoring often.
Anyway, I don't ask for straight As. Or Bs. Cs get degrees, you know? So I basically ask for Cs and above.
On Natalie's report card she got As, Bs, and one C in math.
"So can I get a guinea pig?" she asked hopefully.
I said yes.
We went to Petsmart and lucked out, because there were a ton of guinea pigs. The worker was nice and said Natalie could hold the guinea pigs she was interested in before committing.
Natalie did this:
"I love him," Natalie cooed, because yes, they were all boys. We were told they were about 4-5 months old.
Oh, and we ended up with two, because guinea pigs are herd animals and prefer to be with a friend.
So meet Cheddar and Mr. Business. Bonus points if you can name the TV shows where their names were inspired by.
Natalie is in charge of taking care of them. She got to work setting up their cage because yes, it is in her room.
Guinea pigs love hay, so she makes sure they have plenty of that.
Yes, we have two cats, but they only sniff the guinea pigs and go back to sleep.
Guinea pigs like being around people, so they make a great pet. They don't mind cuddling, but be warned, they might accidentally pee on you.
Would I recommend guinea pigs? Yes. They aren't difficult to take care of. Just make sure they have food, hay, and water. Make sure you spend time with them. Clean out their cage at least once a week.
Plus, they live longer than hamsters, which is a plus. We had one and he didn't even last a year. Guinea pigs can live 4-8 years.
So yes. I recommend guinea pigs. If you're like me and don't want to commit to a dog, guinea pigs might make your kid happy.
Have you ever had guinea pigs?
They are so adorable!!!

ReplyDeleteI've never had a guinea pig, in fact, I've always loved animals from afar! We don't have any pets, but your post is so sweet and uplifting - I bet it inspires many to consider buying and loving a guinea pig as their newest family member.
ReplyDeleteThey look so great. I'm definitely contemplating on getting one for my daughter now.
ReplyDeleteSo adorable. I love how you put an incentive out for her and she worked for it. This is great.

ReplyDeleteI have no idea what show those names are from, but they sure are CUTE! I love that you guys got two of them so they could be friends.
ReplyDeleteThey are so cute and I don't get bonus points because I have no idea where the names are from. Having pets teaches kids responsibility and they are just plain fun.
ReplyDeleteI always wanted one as a child but my parents got us Hamsters and no, it wasn't the same and no, I didn't like them.. Now that my son is older we may have to get one because I can always say its his.
ReplyDeleteAww they are so cute. Kudos to your daughter for the As and to you for keeping your promise and buying not just one but two
ReplyDeleteMy kids would love that. I am afraid they would smell! Plus, we'd need to have a plan for them when we travel!
ReplyDeleteI have never had a guinea pig in my life. My mom consider them as bad as nice and she hated my cello. I think guinea pigs are very cute though.
ReplyDeleteYou are the best mom in the world. We only babysat guinea pigs over christmas break because it was our turn for one of the kids classes.
ReplyDeleteOh, they're so cute! I think you will spend some wonderful time together!
ReplyDeleteOh I've already been peed on by a guinea big... and not my own ... good memories haha. They sound like great companions.
ReplyDeleteAwww, they are so cute and I love their names! I never had Guinea Pigs as a child, but I do love pets and now I have a cat. :)

ReplyDeleteHow cute are these babies? It would be too hard to not get a couple, as they're just so adorable!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter wants one but my son has allergies and I don't know if he will be able to deal with it. I want to take them in the store to test it out
ReplyDeleteWe had a hamster a few years ago, he lasted about 3 years which is good for a hamster. Our cat is about 18 years old.
ReplyDeleteI had guinea pigs growing up and I have so many wonderful childhood memories with them.
ReplyDeleteI've never had a guinea pig but want to snuggle up to one! I have two dogs and they would not take too kindly to the little guys. A guinea pig seems like a great way for a kid to learn responsibility.
ReplyDeleteI hope Cheddar and Mr. Business love their new home (I wish I knew which shows they were named after!)
Their names are amazing! I am sitting here racking my brain, trying to figure out what show the names are from.
ReplyDeleteI typically wouldn't even look at these creature, but, wow, these two are adorable. I love their names! Fun!
ReplyDeleteNow this looks like FUN! I always wanted either a hamster or guinea pig when I was growing up!
ReplyDeleteI bet your kids are having a ball with the guinea pigs. I will be honest I dont think I ever actually interacted with one myself in my entire life.
ReplyDeletei love your pets, so cute. I've been thinking about getting a bunny but I'm sure my landlord wouldn't be too happy LOL.
ReplyDeleteOh my! Natalie really loves pets...and she's got more here. Those guinea pigs look so cute...how she hugs them...aaaw!
ReplyDeleteAmber, I really like their names. Haha! Anyway, I never thought about getting a Guinea pig before and never realised that hamsters had such short lifespans. In our family we collect and name instruments instead.
ReplyDeleteI love the fact that they like being around people. Your guinea pigs are just so adorable!
ReplyDeleteGuinea pigs are awesome pets, we have two. One is very sociable while the other is timid.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness these guys are super cute! We can't have little critters because we have rambunctious kittens lol
ReplyDeleteWe had Guinea pigs for a long time. They are great pets and surprisingly enough our dog loved them too. After we lost our last Guinea we got cats. I wish we had Guineas to be honest!

ReplyDeleteThey are so cute! And she earned this, so congrats to your daughter. Additionally, she gets to learn responsibility in a fun way!
ReplyDeleteGuinea pigs are soo cool, but as with any pet I hate cleaning up after them. We had ours for about six years ... sweetest guinea pig ever!
ReplyDeleteGuinea pigs are the cutest. We used to have a few of them back in my hometown when I was in high school and college. Loved watching them eat. :)

Natalie's guinea pigs are so cute! My sister had a couple of guinea pigs when we were kids. I love the sound they make when they know dinner is on the way.
ReplyDeleteI haven't ever owned a guinea pig. They are adorable. My son was eyeing the dwarf hamsters around Christmas. I told him no because we are at our two pet limit. However, doubt they would count a guinea pig. Maybe in the future. He wants a cat too.
ReplyDeleteOMG the guinea pigs are so cute. I had no idea they were this small. And Natalie looks adorable with them.
ReplyDeleteWe've never had guinea pigs. My niece is asking if she can get one, I'll let my sister read this so she'll allow my niece to get it as pet.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter has been asking for a guinea pig. We travel a lot though, so it's hard to imagine how we'd manage a pet.
ReplyDeleteI had a guinea pig a few years back. They do make great pets! Big enough to hold, but not as complicated as a dog to care for.
ReplyDeleteGuinea pigs make amazing pets. I like to go to PetSmart for all our pets needs. They have such a great selection. Your Daughter must be so happy. Good for her for doing the work to keep her grades up.
