My daughter has an account. And whenever I post about her making videos on my social media, I usually get a comment on how I shouldn't let her go on there because of the pedophiles.
The thing is, there are pedophiles everywhere. And honestly, I don't mind Tik Tok. Here's why my kids are allowed to be on it.
1. It gets them moving. To learn a dance, you have, well, move your body. It means while your kid is on their phone, they're also *gasp* exercising! My daughter has spent an hour learning a dance. That's an hour she's not sitting on the couch texting.
2. They'll learn teamwork. Many friends learn a dance together. Did you catch the This Is Us cast dancing? Natalie has done dances with friends where one does something, and then the other does another move. They have to figure out how they're going to accomplish a dance. Sometimes there are different ideas and it's fun to listen to them figure out an outcome.
(This is when Natalie tried to teach me a dance. It did not go well as I have NO rhythm. But we had fun!)
3. They'll discover classic songs. I can't tell you how many times I've put on a song from the 80s and Natalie is all, "Oh, that's a Tik Tok song." I correct her and am like, "No, that's Total Eclipse From The Heart, thanks." But still. Because of Tik Tok, she knows many "classic" songs so when I play them in the car, she sings along. In the past she might have gone, "Ick, why are you playing that?" But because it's on Tik Tok, it's cool.
4. They'll learn about other people. I mean yes, there are some crazy videos. But sometimes you come across moving ones. Like that teacher who talked about giving his grieving student a break? There has been videos showing people helping others and how YOU can do it too. Natalie has watched videos from a blind woman showing how she lives just like the rest of us. It's not all filth, I promise!
5. It gives them an outlet. Some teens have talked about their depression and have mentioned how Tik Tok has helped them through it. They'll discover other people going through the same thing. Yes, you do have to watch out for trolls because they are EVERYWHERE. But for the most part, teens have stated that Tik Tok has benefited their lives. Plus, it helps them break out of their shell. My daughter has done Tik Tok dances in public when normally she's incredibly shy.
Again, I highly recommend you check the Tik Tok account often. Also, have talks with your child about what is appropriate and what is not. I also recommend getting your own account. As I mentioned, I have one. I don't use it often, but I like to check on my daughter's account to see what comments she's getting. If someone is being inappropriate, I'll say something. Are there pedophiles on Tik Tok? Probably. But there are probably at least 5 pedophiles who live by your house. You just have to be cautious. Monitoring is the key.
So do you have a Tik Tok account?
I do not have a tick tock account. My kids are too young right now. I try to at least keep up with the latest apps to know what they are about
ReplyDeletei don"t let my kids have it because it is too good for them. they deserve better than scrolling through the for you page. you don't move or exercise, you just watch it more than half of the time. Me as a parent i hate it, it is no use.
DeleteMy older kids have TiK Tok too. For pretty much the same reasons as you. And there's your daughter rocking the mom jeans!!! Our server today had them and I instantly thought of your post last week about it. Now all of a sudden I'm seeing them everywhere.
ReplyDeleteHaha yes, she loves her mom jeans!
DeleteMy kids have it too. They show me funny videos sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI am not on TikTok either and I am not really sure what exactly it does. I've seen videos from it though, with people doing funny things like dancing or imitating others. I don't see any harm in that.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you know how to keep your kids safe online. I watch a couple videos and it is about parents teaching their kids
ReplyDeleteI dont have tiktok account but the kids I see around here oing tiktok videos are hllarious. But yeah your points here are very valid.
ReplyDeleteI went on tiktok. Posted 3 videos but did not like the platform as much so deactivated my account. I don't really understand its purpose.
ReplyDeleteI can't use Tik-Tok! But I find it amusing. You've made some very good points. It's all about monitoring, but I don't see any issue letting them on.
ReplyDeletei dont have a TIK TOK but i heard good and bad from kids- there are some great reasons here.
ReplyDeleteI have a TikTok account, and I posted a couple of videos. They have so many cool videos.
ReplyDeleteI'm so confused. What is TikTok? I don't get it? Am I old!?
ReplyDeleteyes lol
DeleteI have yet to use it but my students are using it all day long on their down time. They seem to live it a lot.
ReplyDeleteI can totally relate. It is hard to figure out what kids like to do in this age range. I do like that it gives them a way to get create when they have friends over.
ReplyDeleteMy kids are still much younger, but I totally believe we can't keep our kids from everything. I remember wanting the newest coolest thing at that age. Actually I'm pretty sure I was on Myspace in High school so that wasn't any better lol
ReplyDeleteBAbushka has the tiktok app because The Grands (the older boys) have accounts there. Maybe this week BB will actually sign up, but for now, trying to figure out the IG stories!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Totally agree with your points.
My kids are older than yours, and Tik Tok wasn't around when they were tweens, but I would have let them have an account for the very reasons you mentioned. I think that having a good relationship with your kids includes trusting them to make good choices (and being able to monitor things too.)
ReplyDeleteMy friend and her family made hilarious tik tok videos over the weekend. They were so entertaining! I'm like we need to make some during our quarantine!
ReplyDeleteI let my daughter have her TikTok account not because it's "IN" today but to make herself entertain and educate from other people and as you've said on this article to learn about classic songs. I let her with my guidance, ofcourse.
ReplyDeleteTiktok is really fun. I've seen so many kids who have their own accounts and I am really glad to see that they are enjoying. You're doing a great job!
ReplyDeleteTikTok seems like such a fun app as long as you know what you are getting into and look after your account well! I actually sometimes love just scrolling through to see the fun little videos.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it gives them an outlet. But my son doesn't have an account. His outlet is Twitter. :) -LYNNDEE
ReplyDeleteMy brother is on it. Our kids don't have social media accounts yet.
ReplyDeleteI haven't let them have tiktok yet. I know it is fun and they put together videos with their friends, but I don't let them have it on their phones.
ReplyDeleteTikTok is such a fun social media platform. We appreciate your views as a parent!
ReplyDeleteI literally just heard about TikTok for the first time like a week ago!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I love watching TikTok by myself. I t can be a lot of fun!
ReplyDeleteThese are really great points! I never thought about it getting them moving. Watching tiktoks is so addicting. These are all legitimate reasons!
ReplyDeleteI don't know anything about Tik Tok and don't care to learn another social media channel at my age!
ReplyDeleteI don't know anything about Tik Tok, if my kids help me I will also try to learn it. Great that your kids are doing well on Tik tok.
ReplyDeleteYour post has many detail information. I read all your article and I really like it. Thank you for sharing this great post.
ReplyDeleteMy kids are on TikTok too and I think it encourages creativity
ReplyDeleteI have made my Tik Tik account in the beginning of this year and just posted a single video. It is so difficult to keeping up with all the social media platforms. But Tik Tok really amazed me! There's so much talent in this world. Tik Tok is a platform where ordinary people are doing extraordinary things and inspiring others. There're bad apples everywhere and couldn't agree with all the points that you've mentioned. It is totally okay to expose kids on Tik Tok because they learn so many skills that no one can teach them.
ReplyDeleteTik-tok is seriously so entertaining lol. I think it's good for kids!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a tik-tok fan and my son is not allowed to have account. He's just too young. But it is entertaining.
ReplyDeleteMy teens have accounts and have had them since about 10 when it used to be called musical.ly . I let them for all the reasons you mentioned. I've heard "that's a tic tok song a million times"
ReplyDeleteThese are incredibly stupid reasons you should not let your kids on tik tok it is one of the most dirty apps ever your kids can see anything on there and there is no filtering
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind comment and opinion! ;)
DeleteMy child is 10 but i control her account but fro my 13 year old and 12 year old they control there own.
ReplyDeleteTik tok keeps my family active during this time,in my family we do some hacks, tips, and recipes and it's fun for my kids
ReplyDeleteI hope y’all know that people in China are watching y’all ....
ReplyDeleteSo many bad parents around with flawed thinking.
ReplyDeleteI have three. One of which is now 20. I learned the truth years ago and homeschooled my kids. Protecting them from social media has been a major priority. The same people who criticized me years ago are now doing the same as I am. Slow learners.
TikTok is an absolute NO. I analyze all apps because I am an engineer. This app sends ALL information to China. They also have operatives in the US that help kidnap children. Think about that. They take images of your children and create profiles. They use this info to figure out your location amd identity. They target you. Noy just TikTok. WeChat and many other China apps. Want more?
Google and Apple BOTH are involved. So by default. Your smartphones are working against you. At least with Android you can block the processes. Thus crippling Google. Apple is proprietary. So you're stuck being spied on.
Use the old methods to raise your kids.
And that's your opinion and you are welcome to it. Tik Tok stays here.
Deletebla bla bla and your a scam lol
DeleteI use apple and all the apps your talking about and yet am i kidnaped
Deleteno!
As a teen using tik to i just want to let moms know that if almost 9 out of ten times there is some sort of inappropriate language or dance or song or whatever and there is nothing you can do to filter all that stuff out. Tik tok is 13+ for a reason and now there is more older users on it more like (16-25) and I spend more time scrolling through it then dancing lmao but I've deleted the app since it really decreased my attention span and I spen three or more hours on it per day. Know what your child is using.
ReplyDeleteI can’t have it because all the cussing my mom does not think it’s healthy because when I had it it’s also addicting..I wish I could have it but also my mom had a point it’s to much cussing and shaking my...well you know.
ReplyDeleteMy son had a Tk tok phase a few months ago and knew more about the most famous TikTokers out there. It seems harmless but we should be careful with all social media.
ReplyDeleteI love this post. I see so many parents talking about how terrible TikTok is, and how dangerous it is, but I don't feel it's any scarier than any other platform. Kids are all over social media to being with, and there really are creepers everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to get a tik tok account. I feel like I am so far behind the times, lol!
ReplyDeleteI allow my kids to be on Tik Tok too! It is a fun creative outlet for them.
ReplyDeleteI am still working on figuring out TikTok! Maybe your kids can help me lol!
ReplyDeletewe do not have TikTok although I have been looking more into it recently after friends (my friends.... the parents lol) started posting their videos. My daughter is 10 but her interests are slightly delayed so she's just now asking about youtube, instagram, etc. I think I'll look a little more into it, I like how fun it looks and how it could help her overcome some of her shyness.
ReplyDeleteMine have a tik tok account where they dance and do silly things. It's set to private so only friends see.
ReplyDeleteI am new to the whole tik tok world, but my nieces and nephews use it all the time. Some of them are super funny.
ReplyDeleteMy kids have been on TikTok for years and it's never bothered me. I've made plenty of videos with them and I even created my own account a few months ago. They really offer some great content.
ReplyDeleteMy kids are already adults so I did not have to worry about it! You do make some great valid points here
ReplyDeleteMy son is too young to have tik tok! But my nephews and my nieces are and they have a lot of fun doing dances which makes me laugh all the time.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right. Paedophiles get wherever kids go, TikTok is a lot of fun and so long as your kids know who to avoid let them enjoy it and all the benefits you've listed here!
ReplyDeleteMy son never made a tik tok video but he enjoys watching videos there. I enjoy watching the dance videos myself. So fun! -LYNNDEE
ReplyDeleteMy cousins are in tiktok too. Sometimes I even watch on it. It is indeed a great way to have some things to do and enjoy. They even easily learn to dance. For me it's difficult but its seems so easy for them.
ReplyDeleteI don't have kids and I don't have Tic Tok but I don't see anything wrong with little kids on it as long as its supervised and safe. Whatever keeps them engaged and happy is good!
ReplyDeleteThese are very well reasoned arguments. My girl was on IG an Musicly for awhile and then about a year ago she decided that she didn't want to be on any social media including mine. I'm sure that will change again but for now I have a reprieve.
ReplyDeleteTik Tok dances! I know what are you talk about! They are so cute!
ReplyDeleteIf I open an account on Tik Tok, I'll follow you and your daughter. She is so cute. My friends are on this platform and they always request me to join Tik Tok! Love to watch those dance videos and cool trends. ~~~~~ Thanks Everything Enchanting
ReplyDeleteI agree to all your reasons. And it's a very fun app. I love it too.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a great idea for kids this age!
ReplyDeleteBruh you need to show my mom this she is soooo strict its super annoying
ReplyDeleteI have tik tok and i am a teengaer but it isn't really appropiate for kids. There is a lot of sexual humor on there and violent things i don't think anyone under 14 should be on it.
ReplyDeleteMy kids are 14 and 19 :)
DeleteI've never used Tik Tok but my older children have it to and love it.
ReplyDeleteI don't like tiktok, I don't understand why I have to look at people dancing XD but I think having an open relationship with your kids where they feel safe talking to you is key to protect them from dangerous people
ReplyDeleteI like your rationale. I really enjoy watching clips. I think people can teach their kids about moderation & to be careful, and of course monitor them, too.
ReplyDeleteI saw the comment about parenting the old fashioned way. In my day (and I am in my 60s) my parents let me roam my neighborhood. Would you now? Probably not. My parents sent me to the public school. The commenter is homeschooling his kids. I can go on, but the message is: do you and MONITOR. Engineer or not, it seems pretty easy to find out what the Chinese or others are doing, which in itself makes me think skeptically about that information. I am on Tik Tok. Some of my content is adult only. Meaning bad language, harsh truths, and cooking. Ha. I like your rationale.
ReplyDeleteso awesome you let your kids on tik tok! I am not a big fan of the app but I enjoy watching the cooking.
ReplyDeleteI have a tiktok! It's fun I can understand some concerns but I also think it can be done responsibly
ReplyDeleteI love Tik Tok! It's such a fun app and I learned so many cool hacks from this app <3 You did it right! :)
ReplyDeleteEverything Enchanting <3
It's so important to teach kids to be smart in all situations, including social media. As parents we can't watch them every single second. I think a lot of it depends on how responsible and trustworthy your child is.
ReplyDeletethnks
ReplyDeleteCreators who meet the eligibility requirements can apply within the TikTok app through their pro/creator account.
ReplyDeleteGreat post !! Tiktokdownloader.biz is a free TikTok video downloader platform that helps save TikTok videos without any watermark. The videos are easily accessible on desktop PCs, smartphones (Android, iPhone), iPad, and tablets. Even you can save videos like HD MP4 or MP3 of the best quality.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I feel like if your child has YouTube they should be allowed tiktok because tiktok has now came up with an extra security feature where u know the restrictions. I know those are not 100% accurate but YouTube doesn’t even have that. And if it does it does a lousy job of it. For example my friend searched for something VERY inappropriate and it popped up w/ restrictions. Also you get to dance too! Me being a cheerleader and a dancer makes this app even more fun! EXTREMELY agree w/ ur reasons! Tiktok lets kids branch out.
