But it's true. He's 18 now. He's legally an adult. An adult.
When your son turns 18, you won't believe it at first. But then it sets in.
He's 18. He doesn't need my permission to do things anymore. He can legally make decisions on his own. Doctors don't even need to talk to me anymore. It's all him.
When your son turns 18, you'll picture him as a little boy. You'll remember how he used to sing along to The Wiggles and sit on the couch with a battered old mini notebook as he watched Blue's Clues.
When your son turns 18, you'll want to cry. But you'll also want to laugh because he made it. You made it. He's 18. He's a good kid.
When your son turns 18, you'll cherish the time you have with him, because you don't know how much of it is left. He can decide to leave at any time, and there's not much you can do because he's LEGALLY AN ADULT.
When your son turns 18, you'll hate it. But you'll love it at the same time. You get to see what he'll be as a man. You get to see who he'll be. You'll have all the memories. And yes, it'll sting from time to time, because most of you wants to keep him safe, always, in your home. But the other part of you knows that it's okay to let go. Maybe just a little bit at first.
When your son turns 18, you'll hug him and whisper, "I love you," and he might say, "Wow, I'm 18. I can't believe it. Can you?" and you'll honestly reply, "No."
Happy Birthday Tommy!

ReplyDeletehappy birthday to your son I think you must be so proud of him.
ReplyDeleteThis post makes me think about my own kids who are getting older and the song Sunrise Sunset. When did they get so old and that means I am too.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to him. My oldest will be 16 this year, so I am right behind you. It goes by WAY too fast.

ReplyDeleteIt's so scary to think about, isn't it? My oldest son is now 26 and most of my kids are now adults. But I am loving seeing them live out their lives. Good times!
ReplyDelete18 is a milestone for sure. He's such a darling little boy, I am surprised that you let him grow up. Ha.
ReplyDeleteIt’s one of those moments as a mom when we realize where did the time go? My daughters are still young but one is approaching 10! The decade went by too quickly.
ReplyDeleteIt is always so bittersweet anytime my kids reach a new milestone or celebrate another birthday. I hate that they're growing up but at the same time I love seeing all the changes. Happy birthday to your son!

ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to your son. Mom always cry with things like this. Lots of precious moments!
ReplyDeleteThis got my mama tears going. I've only got 3 years left before mine is 18 and I'm not ready!
ReplyDeleteAmber, that is awesome. I'm so glad you get to experience that feeling. I still remember when my son turned 18 and we desperately tried to have a surprised party for him and he had suspicions. He is now 24 and everyone, except me, thinks he's still 18.
ReplyDeleteWow I cannot believe he is already the big 18! I hope his birthday goes well for you all!
ReplyDeleteI am so happy for him. My boy is not too far from being 18 himself!
ReplyDeleteAww this is such an honest article!!
ReplyDeleteAwww, happy birthday to Tommy. He still looks like a little kid. Now that I'm a parent I think about how I moved out to go to University when I was 17, and what that must have been like for my mom. We're still besties, so it all worked out.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday !! How sweet such great photos. You are one great mom :)
ReplyDeleteIts crushing isn't it? As a parent you are supposed to prepare them to leave the nest but it sure hurts when that happens!
ReplyDeleteAwww 18 is a milestone for sure. Hope he has the the best 18th!
ReplyDeleteThis is a cute post. I cannot imagine my daughter turning eighteen. It's five years away, or four and a couple of months anyway. But I know it will come before I know it. Plenty of things I will fear at that point I'm sure. But happy she is who she is.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting! That is a big milestone. We are about to celebrate my daughter's 13th.. it goes by so fast!
