Having An Imagination Is More Important Than Perfect Grades

Imagination. I always told my kids to never lose it. I worried that they might as they got older. I mean, it's natural. A lot of people do. I refused to lose mine. As an only child, it helped that I had to create my own excitement.

My kids have always had wonderful imaginations. They loved to dress up.

I would tell them to never lose their imagination because people without it generally are dull. It's not that they are bad people, but they aren't as much fun. I have encountered some of these folks. Many are successful with plenty of money in their accounts, but exciting? No. Not really. Their idea of exciting is bragging about getting wasted over the weekend.

I tell my kids having an imagination is more important than perfect grades or a fancy job.

Lucky for me, the imagination has remained even as teenagers. Sometimes Natalie will randomly throw royal balls.

Royal balls means orchestra music playing and a bunch of stuffed guests. Oh, and me. I'm the queen.

It means having a waiter:

A royal ball can happen over several days. Outfits will be changed. Other furry guests will arrive.

It means orders will be taken.

Plastic food that has been around for many years will be served.

Natalie has tons of costumes in her closet. Sometimes one will be put on during visits with friends. They are used to her antics.

Most of her friends are accepting of her imagination. Sure you get a few that have lost theirs and want to make everyone around them as miserable as they must be. "Aren't you too old for costumes?" "Aren't you too old for stuffed animals?" No. I tell her to never listen to those comments. I know they must sting and she might think, maybe I am too old for this. But she always comes back and realizes that she likes to dress up and sleep in a bed full of stuffed animals.

My son creates wonderful videos for college classes. I know he wouldn't be able to make them without imagination.

I am lucky my kids still have their imagination. I hope they never lose it.

I hope they'll always be up for putting on a costume.

And I hope they'll always remember how it felt to be a kid and imagine and hold onto that feeling.

Forever.

  1. It's a very interesting piece, and I do agree with you. The education systems have to evolve we cannot keep raising robots, we need more sensitive and emotionally people.
