10 Tips To Help Make Moving Stress Free

I was compensated for this post but my opinions are my own.

Moving is not fun. But I’ve done it most of my life thanks to having a mom in the military and being married to someone in the military.  I have moved over ten times. It can be a frustrating experience, but I have tips on how to make things go smoother.

1. Hire a reputable company. Obviously if you’re in the military picking your own company isn’t always an option. But if you can, I would pick Texans Movers. They are based in the Houston, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, and other surrounding areas. They are experienced and professional! You can use them for residential, commercial, packing, furniture moving, and more. You can learn more here.

2. Before the movers arrive, set aside the things you do NOT want packed. Otherwise they WILL get packed. There have been stories about trash being packed or even important papers. Always go through everything and set aside a designated area that isn’t to be touched. We usually would keep things we were worried about being packed in our vehicles to be on the safe side.

3. Be friendly with the movers. You don’t have to tip, but at least offer drinks and snack foods. We always paid for lunch and had beverages out. I know it’s not easy packing and lugging everything out.  I wanted to be sure they were comfortable. If anything, at least have bottles of water for them.

4. Try to have things organized. For example, I always had all our cookware and such out on counters for easy packing. I made sure to get rid of junk I did not need packed.

5. Keep in mind that certain things CANNOT be packed. I had to give up some candles, which was sad, but I understood why. I wouldn’t want melted wax on my things in case our stuff had to be stored in a hot location. If you attempt to pack them yourself in plastic containers, know that the movers will go through them and pull out the forbidden items. Go over rules with movers so you know ahead of time.

6. If you have pets, make sure they are contained. You wouldn’t want the family dog to escape and go running down the street. We have cats, so they were always put in their carriers before the movers arrived.  If you can leave a pet with a friend, even better, that way they don’t have to be around the chaos.

7. Take photos of high value items. We always took pictures of televisions, computers, or other expensive belongings. That way if anything happened, we had proof of what they looked like, along with the serial numbers. If something breaks, you will have proof that it wasn’t broken before the move. Also mark this down on the moving sheet.

8.  If you have photos that are important on a computer, make sure you get them on a flash drive just in case. In most cases everything will be okay, but on the rare instance they are not, at least the photos will be with you.

9. Before the movers come, try to get rid of things you no longer need. In military moves, you are only allowed so much weight, so this is important. Donate things to charities or offer them in neighborhood groups. The less you have to move with, the easier.

10. Take a deep breath. Don’t stress. There will be some tense moments, but think about the new adventures you’ll have at your new home. Things will be smoother if you hire a reputable company like Texans Movers. You can even get a quote to see if they are right for you.  They have competitive pricing and have been around 13 years, so they know what they are doing. Keep them in mind for residential moving in Houston.

Will you be moving anytime soon?
