Elton John. He's lived an incredible life. He was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight. While I like the name Reginald, I can understand why he changed it. Elton is one of the best selling artists of all time with a ton of hits and let's not forget, he also has an incredible sense of fashion. My daughter is all about her outfits, so she appreciates this about him. (Oh, and let's not forget he was KNIGHTED by Queen Elizabeth so he's SIR Elton John, if you please.)
My mom had asked me a while back if we wanted to go to his farewell Yellow Brick Road concert. Of course I said yes. I mean it's ELTON JOHN. Natalie didn't know until after Mom had purchased the tickets. When I told her she teared up. With her tea cup. Because, you know, it's Natalie. She was thrilled.
And then of course as I mentioned, we discovered the concert was on the same day as Homecoming. Natalie loves all the social things that come with high school so it stung. But she knew Elton John is so much better than Homecoming.
So large events are held at the Alamodome in San Antonio. It's located downtown, so it can be a pain in the ass to get there. Parking can be tricky. So ARRIVE EARLY. There were articles after the concert from people saying they couldn't even see the show due to lack of parking. You cannot just roll up right before the concert and expect to find parking. Especially if it's someone as big as Elton John.
We arrived around 3 hours early and found parking at the Alamodome without any issues.
So what does one do 3 hours early? Well, it takes a bit to get in the venue because you go through security and then have to wait in lines to get inside. There is basic food inside so we picked up nachos and hot dogs.
While waiting, also take photos:
Yes, Natalie is in her Homecoming dress. There were people dressed in Elton's famous outfits walking around, plus lots of sequined looks. Also there were feather boas everywhere. So yes, dress up!
And then it was time for the concert:
Here's the set list from the concert:
He played so many amazing hits:
And Elton looked incredible! His band was fantastic. The music was magical. Natalie was ecstatic when Candle In The Wind came on because she's obsessed with Marilyn Monroe:
Natalie was completely transfixed. She basically stood the entire time, as did many other people. Elton has an aura around him that is hypnotic.
The audience loved him:
He did come out for an Encore after hearing all our cheers and screams:
Elton explained that this would be his final concert because he needs to be with his family. He loves and misses them too much to be away now. He sang Goodbye Yellow Brick Road last, and I won't lie, I teared up a bit. And then he walked away with pumps of his fists and cheers from the audience:
The concert was beautiful. We danced. We screeched. We cried.
Even better, you can watch his final concert at Dodger Stadium LIVE on Disney+ on November 20th beginning at 730 EST . We will certainly be tuning in. We know it'll be another moving experience as he performed there nearly 50 years ago.
Thank you Elton for the memories. They'll be with us forever. And now Natalie feels the urge to watch Rocketman again. (It's a movie about his life and she is a bit obsessed with it.)
