Execution Of Lady Jane Grey Painting In The National Gallery London

Natalie really wanted to find the Execution Of Lady Jane Grey painting.

Apparently it's gotten popular on TikTok. After all, Lady Jane was only 17 when she was executed. The poor girl was forced on the throne. She wanted to be left alone. After King Edward, Henry VIII's son died, no one wanted a Catholic queen. Mary was the next in line. She was Catholic.

Jane was Protestant.

So she was forced to marry and was put on the throne for 9 days before Mary's supporters won.

Mary didn't want to kill her cousin. She was fine having her stay in the Tower of London. But Mary's future husband was from Spain, and he was worried about another uprising so he said Jane needed to die.

Mary was desperate for kids, so she signed the death warrant.

Mind you, Jane was executed in 1553. This painting wasn't done until 1833. It's obviously a romanticized version of what happened.

But the fact of the matter was Jane was only 17, being executed because the men in her life told her what to do. (Don't worry. Many of the men who forced her on the throne got beheaded too.)

You can find this painting in the National Gallery in London. It's free admission. This is a popular piece of work, so people are usually always gathered around it. It can be tricky getting a photo because you don't want to block people.

Van Gogh's painting is also here:

And Monet's:

There is so much to see, so if you're in London and need something free to do, pick the National Gallery. There might be a line, but it moves quickly to get in. I think you can even book ahead and get in a shorter line--sometimes they do stop allowing people in, but when we went, everyone was being allowed admittance.

It's absolutely gorgeous inside & outside:

So have you ever been to the National Gallery? Who is your favorite artist?

  1. Such a tragic tale. The Tudors were certainly an interesting family.

  3. That is awful that this happened to her. I can’t imagine being in her shoes and having to make those decisions.

  4. What a crazy story and so glad that we live in todays age versus that age as women were treated horribly. I do love that time period... history is my thing and I always loved the dresses that the ladeis wore then .
