The Winter Storm In Texas

When it drops below freezing in Texas, people panic.

We're not used to it.

We're used to warmth.

Not ice.

And yes, I know it's hilarious to other states when you hear about the panic and the clearing of grocery store shelves. I lived in Wyoming for 5 years. I dealt with this:

Wyoming did not shut down easily. You could be snowed in and Wyoming would be like, "Okay, see you later. Just shovel your way out. We'll wait."

Texas?

It's 30 degrees and people are like, "AHHHH!" and race around with hangs wagging above their heads.

So lots of businesses DID shut down over the cold, since ice would be present. No one knows how to drive in general in Texas--add frost, and everyone just falls apart.

Did we get the freeze?

Yup.

Were there accidents?

Of course.

Did Texas marvel at the frozen water? Naturally! (Posting this made people in Montana laugh at me.)

Since no one knows how to behave properly in this weather, both of my children's colleges were canceled on Monday. It's going to be in the teens in the morning and that's just too cold for anyone.

I am not a fan of winter weather. I do prefer the heat.

I worry about the stray cats I feed. I always try to let them in, but they're like, yeah no thanks. But I do have houses out for them, and they all seemed okay even though their homes had icicles.

We will get through this. When I'm shivering, I just think that it'll be warm again soon.

What's the weather like where you're at?

  1. I understand what you mean. I'm in FL, born & raised unfortunately, and have NEVER dealt with snow, unless you count the snow flurries we got once in Central FL in the '80's. When it does get super cold here, we aren't equipped for it, at all. A few weeks ago we had to wrap/cover some of our outdoor plants & bring a few inside overnight. So when people in other states laugh at us, it's kind of annoying.

  2. We got super cold here this weekend after it rained. So the roads were icy Sunday morning but the sun came out at 9am and the roads were better.

  3. I found your account of the Texas winter storm both eye‑opening and heartfelt, especially how you captured the challenges people faced and the resilience that emerged. The way you wove personal stories with practical insights made the impacts feel real and urgent without being overwhelming. Thanks for sharing such a thoughtful piece that honors both the struggle and the strength of those affected.

  4. Lol, omg, it's the same here in London. A little snow or a storm and people panic and panic buy. It's insane really, especially as most are near enough to stores to buy food when needed and those are always open anyway.

  5. We’re dealing with a winter snowstorm too, but you all are getting much more ice than we are. We just have a lot of snow. I know this kind of weather is different for Texas, but here in Michigan we’re used to it. I can imagine it’s really stressful for Texas and a few other states right now. I even saw on the news that some grocery store shelves were already empty.

  6. That is a lot of ice! We just got a lot of snow, maybe around a foot. It was very fluffy. It snowed all day Monday and we had a snow day which is good - there was quite a bit of cleanup involved.

  9. I’m so glad this storm wasn’t nearly as bad as snowmagedon in 2021. That storm caused so many power outages. I’m thankful I didn’t lose power that year. But my water froze which was annoying. It started Friday with rain then overnight turned to freezing rain/sleet. By Saturday am when it was time to go to work it was already an ice rink outside. Needless to say I got a mini vacation. I only missed two of the 4 working days that we closed. But still it was annoying. Then on top of that sleet/ice we got even more sleet and snow. It looked like 2-4 inches in spots. I know the dogs didn’t want outside.
