"This is worse than my anxiety ridden dream," my Mom gasped as she took in all the stuff gathered haphazardly in Natalie's dorm room.
At lunch, prior to this, Mom had said she had frequent dreams where she had too much stuff to move out of her dorm back when she was in college.
And suddenly, her nightmare was smacking her in the face in the form of her granddaughter's belongings.
There seemed to be bags of things everywhere. Natalie had packed, kind of, and was shoving things randomly into containers.
We walked in the room and I suddenly was fully of aware of what those therapists in the Hoarders show must've felt like. Claustrophobic, for starters. And then the alarming urge to shout, "What the fu*k?"
But what else can you do but start grabbing stuff and getting it OUT? Especially when there is a deadline to be all the way GONE or else fees will be administered.
But truly, where did everything come from?
Oh and Natalie's face is like that because she had a stage makeup final in the morning. (She got an A.) But she didn't feel like taking it all off. So we moved her out like that and I think people in the building understand her antics at this point (she once walked around in a full face of Pennywise makeup) so no one even blinked an eye. (Though some parents did. I heard one mutter, "What kinda dorm is this?")
It took several trips to get everything out. Thank goodness for this cart and a wagon we had brought. And thank goodness the elevator was working. The day before it BROKE and I had nightmares of us lugging the bins down the stairs. Natalie is one the top floor, naturally.
And on that top floor, she had this Pennywise looking out the window, and as we passed other families, one kid was like, "That was YOUR dorm? Cool!" because I guess Pennywise had lots of fans.
In the end we got it done. With 15 minutes to spare. Natalie promised that next year she wouldn't have this much stuff.
(I'm not sure I believe her.)
But it's finished. And she's home for the summer. She already has her new dorm room for Fall Semester. She's with the same roommate she had before because they got along so well. It's always a wonderful thing when that happens.
She's going to miss her school. Not finals or studying though. But she loves the area, the people, the professors..
And I still have one kid in college, and he moves out Tuesday, but thankfully (THANKFULLY) he does not have nearly as many things.

Your moving-from-college post is so relatable and entertaining. Packing memories, clutter, and chaos into one adventure feels wonderfully authentic and heartfelt.
ReplyDeleteThat brings back some memories of college dorm life! Some kids accumulated an unbelievable amount of stuff in their rooms.
ReplyDeleteI guess her artistic nature extends to having lots of things that speak to her spirit. OR she needs an intervention. LOL. I think it's the first one, though!
ReplyDeleteThis post made me laugh. Just looking at her room makes me think of those big trucks that come up to the house in every episode.
ReplyDeleteIt is good that you live near the school. My son attends school in another state and will be flying home for the summer. Thankful he can store his stuff at a friends house.
ReplyDeleteThis post was equal parts hilarious and relatable! I could practically see the mountain of dorm treasures piling up. Your storytelling made a stressful move feel entertaining, warm, and wonderfully real.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a vivid scene, I can practically feel the chaos in that dorm room. The mix of humor and panic really comes through. Happy days.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, go Natalie. That's amazing her getting an A in her final. I am sure you are very proud of her. How much stuff did she have!!! Lucky that the lift worked x
ReplyDeleteYikes.... this is too funny and I can see how she would have grabbed a few things in this visit home... and then again the next time. It is a snowball effect LOL.... but at least you guys got it done and did not have to pay any fees. Love the pics and I a so happy she got an A on her stage makeup final!
ReplyDeleteWell, that was a nice mess to handle! Pennywise usually would scared me, but this time made me laugh lol
ReplyDeleteI can't believe Freshman year is over! That's great that you got to be a part of her moving out. Congrats on a great first year at college.
ReplyDeleteOh, the memories! I thought my daughter accumulated a lot of stuff in her first year...lol Congrats on her first year in college, that's a great accomplishment!
ReplyDeleteYou did a fab job of packing everything in such a short time. It amazes me how kids can get so much stuff to fit in that one room. It must be like a jigsaw to get everything to fit.
ReplyDeleteI guess she lived alone? LOL. But a space that small is hard to keep organized for sure. Over time it can accumulate before you know it.
ReplyDeleteMoving is always a challenge, and moving from the college dorm is something special. Super great to hear that I am not alone!
ReplyDeleteThis gave me a good laugh because it’s so relatable. It’s amazing how much stuff can accumulate in such a small dorm room over time. Thanks for sharing this fun and honest perspective!
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed this post as it confirms what a wonderful free spirit she is and just like her Mom - unafraid. I hope she has a wonderful summer and that she finds a new home for some of her stuff. I need to do the same. Hahaha ☺️ Elizabeth F
ReplyDeleteLove her free spirit and artistic style! And it’s so true that we accumulate a lot of stuff !
ReplyDeleteMy daughter decided to go to college out of state. Needless to say she lost a bunch of her possessions. Her aunt stored her stuff for a while but eventually got rid of it because it was sitting for way too long in her basement. Never take more than you can bring home in one trip.
ReplyDeleteMoving to dorm is emotional. I feel like doing this makes you both happy and sad because it will change a lot to the family.
