The Melting Pot Files

Have I mentioned how much I love The Melting Pot?

No?

Well, I love The Melting Pot.

I especially love when I can go to The Melting Pot without my children present. It means I can relax and not have to admonish a child for staring at another patron. It means I can eat my food AS SOON AS IT ARRIVES and not have to worry about tending to someone else’s.

I got to go to The Melting Pot without children on Friday. I went with my friend Amanda. We left our kids with the husbands and took off.

Seriously. I took off. When it came time for Amanda to pick me up, I kissed my children goodbye and rushed on out of there. Natalie didn’t want to let me go at first. She gripped onto my leg and told me to stay. I was briefly touched (aww, she likes me, she really likes me!) but then I got irritated when she wouldn’t let go. I mean, she was behaving like I went out all the time. She made me feel like that scary ass mom in The Nanny Diaries.

“Er Tom?” I called out, because he was sitting in front of the computer playing his game.

“Tom?” I said again.

Nothing.

“TOM!”

He jumped and turned. “What?” He had the nerve to look irritated with me.

I pointed to Natalie, who was glued to my knee. “Your daughter. I need to go.”

Tom came over and picked Natalie up.

“I want Mommy,” Natalie said and reached her arms out to me.

Oh for—

Look, I’m not THAT entertaining.

She just totally wanted to get her way.

But she wasn’t going to get her way. Because I gave her a kiss and hightailed it out of there. I love her to bits, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes I feel like a caged animal who has finally been let free.

I highly recommend The Melting Pot. I do not recommend bringing little children there seeing as a burner is in the middle of your table. Granted, I have seen little children being brought in but I imagine that these are Good Children Who Know Not To Touch. I have curious children who would probably put their palms smack down on the burner just to see if it was as hot as I told them it was.

So yes. No kids when I go.

The first course is the cheese fondue. It’s amazing. I am a huge fan of cheese. The waiter or waitress prepares it all in front of you. This means that they have to be chatty because it would be awkward if they just stood there in silence stirring cheese. Amanda and I had a waiter who I wanted to call Hans even though I believe he said his name was Scott. He looked like a Hans though.

I wanted to hug Hans when he said that we both looked too young to have two children. Because lately I’ve been feeling old and gross and holy crap is that a new WRINKLE near my eye? And here comes Hans saying that I looked young. Granted, I bet Hans just wanted a nice tip so he figures calling women young does the trick. Oh well.

After the cheese course comes a delicious salad. Then the meat. You’re given a bunch of raw meat and you cook it in these scrumptious broth. I tried not to laugh when Hans laid down a large silver spoon and said that it was for floaters that escaped our pokers.

Yes, I wanted to giggle when he said floaters.

No, I didn’t because I’m twenty seven and shouldn’t be laughing at things like that anymore.

Okay, I did laugh after Hans left.

I couldn’t help it.

I’m only human.

The last bit is my favorite.

Want to guess what it is?

Yup.

The CHOCOLATE fondue.

If you sign up for The Melting Pot’s mailing list, you get a coupon for free chocolate fondue if you buy all the other courses we did.

By the time the chocolate fondue came around, I was full. But I’m never too full for chocolate.

I mean, how could you turn THIS down?

You get angel food cake, brownies, strawberries, bananas, cheesecake, and rice krispy treats to dip in it.

Plus if you get the chocolate fondue we got, the Yin and Yang, you could lie and tell yourself that it’s actually quite healthy since it includes dark chocolate and that you’re only helping your heart by ordering it.

At least that’s what I do.

Yes, The Melting Pot can be expensive. With the coupon, it came to $70. But if you split the costs, it’s not so bad.

And trust me when I say that it’s WORTH IT.

  6. Right smack dab in the middle of this I had a craving for M&Ms which I'm now munching. I got hungry laughing about Hans. Now I'm wishing I'd waited for the chocolate fondue. That's such a better breakfast than M&Ms don't you thing?

  9. There is no melting pot anywhere near me. That's okay, because I don't think I could justify that kind of cash expenditure. But I think I might try that chocolate fondue at home!! What a good "girls night" dessert!!

Glad you had an awesome time. My kids are teens and still make me feel horrible for going out on rare occasions with friends.

  12. We have one near our house. We went once, but if I'm paying that much to eat at a restaurant I want somebody else to do the cooking. We would go back for the chocolate stuff though (but we haven't)

And those two blondes in the pictures do look pretty good.

  15. I have always heard such wonderful things about The Melting Pot, but I've never been. I don't even know where the closest one is. Perhaps after I go to the beach this summer, I'll look into it. :)

  18. Um.. the cheese and the chocolate look to friggin DIE FOR. Thanks for posting this when I'm PMSing but still made myself bring healthy food to work. Thanks very much. I'm a vegetarian so I could care less about the meat lol.

I don't have kids, but my boyfriend does, and they LOVE me, especially the younger one. When its time for them to leave, she is usually clinging around my neck and crying, saying, "I don't want to go back to mommy's!!" But after a week of dolls and crying and peeing the bed and fighting with each other and general mess, I am kind of ready for them to go back to mommy. Good thing we all get along!

  19. wait...people actually are able to eat WHEN their food arrives? I need to further investigate this phenomenome.

I remember going to The Melting Pot once. Lo about 85 years ago....before I had children. I ate a marshmallow coated in oreo and dipped in chocolate. All things in life are not compared to that greatness.

  20. I've never heard of the Melting Pot before. We NEED one around here.

I've been a mother for too long...I would have been on the floor over "floaters that escape from your pokers."

  22. You are making my mouth water! I love the Melting Pot, and I was just there last Monday and I want to go again. My favorite cooking style is the Mojo, in fact I just found a recipe online for it and I'm SOOO trying it tonight, and a recipe for the green goddess dip which I am also trying to make tonight. Now my stomach is rumbling.

  23. Oh wow. I love the MP!!! I havent been in years. It used to be $60 for 2 people. Oh, I am quite the fondue nerd. I have 2 pots of my own. :) Now I'm going to have to make some.

  27. Love the melting pot. My husband took me for my b-day a few years back.

  28. I must go. Anything that involves, cheese, chocolate, and awkward chit chat with a random stranger is right up my alley! Plus, to have an excuse to leave the children at home...where do I sign?!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Wow I have never been there, but I now REALLY want to go! I just wanted to tell you that I just found your blog, and have been reading from the beginning to try to catch up and you are wonderful! I have been cracking up from the moment I found you! thanks so much!

  30. Never been but cheese, dark chocolate separated by a small desultory salad course for rationalization's sake sounds like heaven to me. White chocolate just confuses and frustrates me, however. Calling it chocolate and all when it's more like the big stick of cocoa butter we used to rub on chapped lips.

  31. Normally, I like cheese, especially melty cheese, but for some reason I'm not a big fan of their cheese fondue. I am, however, a HUGE fan of their chocolate! Mmmmm...

I love the bit about getting "floaters" that escape the "pokers"!

I've never been - to a Melting Pot I mean - not a floater fest. Me thinks I might have to stir up a fondue this weekend...yum.

I wonder if Hans' ears are burning with all the comments about him? LOL

    Have a scent-sational day!

  38. I second everything you said. MMMM. Chocolate. And the awkward chatting with people-who-look-like-they-are-named-Hans. (I think they recruit waiters on that criteria...) Heheh... pokers.

  41. I'm sorry, but did you say you feel OLD at 27? Just wait til your over 40. Just wait. THEN you may complain. Because you will find grey hair in places you didn't think you would. But not in your cheese fondue. At least I hope not!

  42. Funny, we have fondue pots in the basement because they were all the rage in the 70s or whenever.... And we just said we should throw them out because we'll never use them again, but now I think I'd like to.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It all sounds yummy. I will have to look around and see if there is one around here.

  44. Haven't been to the melting pot in years...since someone who worked there told me they recycled the food. Yeeew! But your post is making me want to consider it again. Love chocolate, cheese, breads, etc. Mmmm...Plus it truly occupies the kids.

  47. I love the melting pot so much and have never been since I had a child. You have inspired me. I should demand to go, sans child. There's no way I could take him to a place with burners on the table.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I love the Melting Pot. Though, I think that getting the cheese and chocolate courses are enough.

  49. Guess what? They just built one by my house!!! I am so happy! It is our favorite splurge restaurant (and never, never NEeeeeeever with my kids. EVER) too. And I always order an apple martini to go with my meal. It's just a given.

  55. I haven't been there in years. I enjoyed it, though. I liked making fondues at home, too. But my fondue pot (and cookbook) is packed in storage while we're on the road! Darn!

I agree with the waiter - you guys look way to young to have young'uns yourselves!
