Romantic Bits

Look, you have to understand that Tom isn’t the most romantic person in the world.

His idea of romance is to say, “You look nice.” Only, he doesn’t exactly look at you when he says it, he’s usually in front of the computer and tosses the compliment over his shoulder.

I’ve tried to get him to watch The Notebook a number of times and he’s just made fun of Noah and asked where he balls went. “Maybe they blew off when he went to war,” Tom said bluntly and I didn’t speak to him for three hours after that.

He loves to buy cards and not write a thing in them. He’s all, “Why should I write in the card when the message on it is what I think?” I can’t tell you how often he’d hand me a card in high school with nothing in it. I’d open and close it, twisting it left and right, searching for Tom’s message. Then I’d ask him about it at lunch and he’d tap the front of the card. “My message is right there.” “Yes but,” I said slowly. “You haven’t personalized it.” I should have known then what I was getting into.

Lately he’s been writing in cards because he knows if he doesn’t that I’ll say something.

So when a card came in the mail, I wasn’t sure if anything would be in it.

He joked on Skype that he had sent a card, but nothing was in it. “I don’t have to worry about you complaining in person about no writing so I didn’t bother,” he said.

However.

Look.

He WROTE in the card.

And he was romantic about it!

And then, a couple days later, I got personalized M&Ms in the mail. He made them himself. Well, not completely, he didn’t like MAKE MAKE them. He just ordered them. But he put his own messages on. (The messages are “I love you,” “Forever Yours,” “Always With You,” and “I miss you.”)

“What made you think to send me candy?” I asked him on Skype as I munched on the M&Ms.

“Oh. I was eating my M&Ms and saw the ad on the back of them. I thought, why the hell not,” Tom answered and then let out a tiny burp.

Ahh, how sweet.

Why the hell not followed by a belch.

Still, I’ll take it.

  5. My husband got me M&M's once and had my picture put on them. Nothing says "I love you" like eating your own face!

  6. Good man! You're training him ... even if it is a painfully slow process. ;-) I love the personalized M&Ms! Totally sweet.

  8. He was thinking of you when eating chocolate - that's something. (what romantic thing did you send him? You have the kids, he just has the dog.)

  9. That actually is very very sweet. I think it's hilarious that he never wrote in his cards (although I realize you found this less than hilarious!). I always write in cards but sometimes I do think "well, what else can I add to top this?". :)

  11. That's so sweet of him to send you a card and m&ms! Personalized, no less! Perhaps absence truly does make the heart grow fonder (and more romantic)...

  12. Ewww. Okay, cannot relate.

I call my hubby Drama Queen for a reason. I am the "guy" in our relationship...he is the mushy one, and I buy him the card that says "Ha ha - your an old fart!" for his birthday.

I think I am romantic if I remember to buy him socks and underwear.

  13. *sigh* I am so glad to know that chivalry and romance are alive and well in your world. Tom is a big old sweetie pie, I don't care what he says in person! I'm really happy for you, girl!

  14. Aww. True romance. :)

    Personalized M&Ms for the win!!

  15. Are you kidding? A personalized card and M&Ms? Who cares about a belch when you've got M&Ms? Not me.

  16. I was trying to read what he wrote in the card... "If I could give you the world I would" that is so awesomefully sweet!!!

"You are my special woman and I love you very much. You are world, my everything. Time will go by and I'll be back in your loving arms..."

*wipes a tear* awww, that is so romantic!!!

  17. I LOVE that he says "the message is right there." My Dad almost never writes in his cards to my Mom, except signing it "always, Tony" or something like that. But this m&m thing...he CLEARLY loves you.

  18. He's learning, he's learning. Next week it'll be bunches of red roses, you bet.

  19. My husband is everyday thoughtful. I don't have to get after him about doing dishes or anything,a nd he gives me nightly foot and backrubs. But he's not really romantic either. he needs a lot of guidance in that department. But that's OK.

  20. I didn't realize you two have been together since high school. That's nice. It's very thoughtful of him to have written in this card, even if he DOES think Noah's balls got blown off. (I might not have talked to him for a few hours either after that. Because Noah's "the bomb." (Get it, bomb. Haha.)

  25. That's really sweet! It's extra special, too, because he not only wrote in it, but he wrote a lot!

  26. Love it! I laugh so hard because mine thinks that romance is this weird version of immaturity. He'd have the same M&M though.

  31. Actions speak louder then um...burps! It's clear that he's really missing you! I mean, both writing in a card (a lot) and giving you personalized chocolates?

    Pretty damn awesome!

  32. He's a man's man.

We don't do mushy shit well.

  40. Hey, romance is where you find it. Sometimes it is even followed by a belch.

  41. The only romantic things my husband ever does for me involve food. Must be the male way of thinking. I had a crappy day once and he brought me home a candy bar. Thanks, Hon. That makes it all so much better.

    Almost though. I love chocolate.

  42. Awww this post made my heart melt. And I know that sounds cheesy as hell, but that is the only way I know how to describe the feeling I got. Lol.

Your hubby is a sweetheart. :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. A guy who would send you personalized M&Ms is definitely a keeper.

    ReplyDelete
  44. VERY NICE. So that old adage, "Absence make the heart grow fonder" really works, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  45. LOL I love it! TOo funny and a "true" romantic at heart even if he doesn't always put it into words. However, I get the same kind of cards except I do get an I LOVE YOU in it at least! Thanks for sharing! xoxoxo

  46. Way to go TOM!! He knows he's on "camera" on here, doesn't he?

    ReplyDelete
  47. That is wonderful - I often think hmmmm, not exactly what I hoped for but I will take when I ask my hubby why he did or said something.

Glad you had this special moment - good idea to take a pic of the m&ms because I am sure that they will disappear quite fast.

Enjoy! Love reading your blog and smiling.

Whitney - thanks for the hard laugh!

  49. My husband isn't romantic either. Still, they surprised us once in a while, right? He made me breakfast in bed this morning :) I'm glad he did something nice for you while he's away!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Awww, it shows he's thinking of ya! Very sweet.

  51. What a great husband! Belch and all. Romance is completely absent from our house...maybe its time to suggest that it makes a return! I wouldn't mind some M&Ms, they don't even have to be personalized!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Personalised M and Ms? He's a keeper.

  53. Your husband always cracks me up!! It does sound like he's really trying though, and that's awesome! I love that the M&M's are red, white, and blue!

  55. Holy crap. I've just met you and I like both you and your man. It's a win win situation!!

  57. LOL... Tom.. you are MY role model!!!

    :)

  58. Awww there is a softie in that rough and tumble exterior!

    ReplyDelete
  59. AWWW! That was sweet. And I'd have been happy for just a bag of regular M&M's. Hello? Chocolate! My husband is also not so sweet. *sigh*

  60. I just go goo-goo when my husband does anything nice for me -- filling up the car with gas, picking up the kids from school, getting one of my favorite drinks, etc.
