Let me start off by saying that I love Redbook magazine.
But sometimes I don’t understand their articles. Or most of the fashion that is depicted. Still, I really enjoy getting my copy in my mailbox each month.
This article caught my eye and made me laugh.
Mainly because it basically told me NOT to do everything I DO when I go to the movies.
For starters, I always get butter on my popcorn even though Hungry Girl warns that this means my popcorn can be 1500 calories. She states that popcorn is already seasoned enough and that extra butter isn’t necessary.
Um.
No butter on popcorn reminds me of eating salted Styrofoam. Not that I’ve ever had Styrofoam but that’s how I imagine it would taste. I have to get butter. In fact, there are times when I say, “Extra butter, please.”
Hungry Girl would be pleased to know that I do order a Diet Coke, although she says that water is better. But water and popcorn taste boring to me. I must have a soda to go with it.
I do get the nachos even though Hungry Girl says NEVER to get them because they are apparently 1,200 calories. I don’t care. I love the nachos. I get mine with jalapeños. However, I usually get the popcorn OR the nachos. I rarely have both, unless I’m very, very hungry. Or PMSing.
I also bring my own snacks, but not nuts. I sneak in Sno Caps, because I can find them for a buck and I refuse to fork over three bucks at the cinema. I mix the Sno Caps with my popcorn for a salty/sweet treat.
Hungry Girl mentions that it’s best to share items bought at the cinema and…well, Tom and I usually get our own stuff when we go. This is because Tom is male and eats food faster than Charlie Sheen can spot a bar. When I’m with friends I share. But some of them like popcorn without the butter, which as I’ve stated before I don’t like, so then I’m stuck with all my buttery goodness.
And now I’m craving movie theater nachos. Anyone want to go to the movies with me? We can see the new Adam Sandler film Just Go With It.

We always do popcorn with buttery flavored oil, as tradition and to support the theaters, as they make more money off of that than they get from showing the films. Plus it's something to munch on.
ReplyDeleteAhhhhh nachos. I used to get them every time hubbs and I would go to a movie. Mmmm. You're makin' me hungry. Nothing like nachos at 9am. ::shudder:: I'd totally love a movie date, but I can't strand the Hubbster, and the baby would talk through the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteJunior Mints, pretzel bites with spicy nacho cheese and a huge Diet Coke. Our theaters keep the Junior Mints in the freezer (I suggested it to them). Nothing better than frozen Junior Mints!!
ReplyDeleteWe do popcorn..but now I'm craving some nachos! I want to go to the movies.... :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I go with the boyfriend- he loves to get the extra-large popcorn with extra-large soda- and that's just his order lmao- then I get the nachos and usually a slushie lol- yummy- today would be a great movie day if it hadn't already dumped six inches in the past hour with another foot to come...
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to the movies in SO long! And if your going to the movies, you're there for a treat and that means not counting calories. right?
ReplyDeleteI went to The Rite this weekend and had popcorn with no butter. Yep. Styrofoam. YUCK. I have not mixed Sno Caps with my popcorn, but I *have* poured a box of glosette raisins in my bag once or twice. I imagine the taste is similar.
ReplyDeleteI usually sneak in alcohol to the movies...yeah I act like I'm still in high school LOL
ReplyDeleteI strongly suggest the movies...
ReplyDelete-The King's Speech
-The Fighter
However, if you want something more light hearted I laughed my ass off in "No Strings Attached"
Oddly enough, I can't stand buttery popcorn - I like the flavor but can't tolerate all that grease. However, popcorn and Sno Caps? That is a BRILLIANT idea. I'm totally stealing that one. :)
ReplyDeleteNow I want something salty/sweet! DAMN YOU!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou gotta do butter. Haven't she heard of Paula Deen? Everything tastes better with butter!
ReplyDeleteNow I wanna go to the movies and have some popcorn.
My philosophy is, if you're going out to the movies you might as well do it right. I love Sno Caps!! Now I'm craving a big fatty bucket of popcorn!!
ReplyDeleteWell of course you have to have the extra butter and salt too when you go to the movies! There is nothing that tastes better than Movie popcorn with extra butter! YUMMY! :) Also, instead of the snow caps I get the crunch bites - yum! Also a must - sweet and salty at the same time! :) I'd love to go see the movie with ya! It should be really good! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't like the butter at theatres, so I usually skip popcorn. Sometimes I get Twizzlers though.
ReplyDeleteWhen I'm home, however, it's extra butter microwave popcorn. Mix in some m&ms for the salty and sweet, but thanks to the shell, it's way less messy (and a lot more colorful) than SnoCaps. The perfect drink to go with this is Dr. Pepper. That is a goooood night, my friend. :)
I never thought to mis sno caps with my popcorn, but I'm going to see "The King's Speech" today and that's exactly what I'm going to do!
ReplyDeleteAnd the popcorn will damn well be buttered, too. ;)
I always get a larger Diet Coke... and expect free refills, if this isn't the case, they better watch out, lol!
ReplyDeleteWe always get popcorn with extra butter. But I don't do diet drinks unless it is Dr Pepper.
ReplyDeleteI'd go to the movies with you, but I'm all snowed in. :-(
There is nothing tastier than movie theater popcorn. In fact, I need to get me some.
ReplyDeletebefore meeting my husband, i would NEVER get snacks at the snack bar. now i'm accustomed to nachos, popcorn, sodas, candy- everything. maybe it's why we are broke...
ReplyDeleteNachos with processed cheese and LOTS AND LOTS of jalapenos sounds amazing right now!
ReplyDeleteLast Saturday I went with friends and got the gas-station-style "latte" they had and my friend Heather snuck in three kinds of candy, Jr. Mints, Mike and Ike and something I don't eat.
ReplyDeleteI partook of the Jr. Mints and Mike and Ikes for SURE. ;)
What's that? Popcorn without butter? Why, that's CRAZY TALK I tell ya!
ReplyDeleteWhen my husband and I go to the show, we get that big vat-o-popcorn and "share", and I use the term "share" VERY loosely because he scarfs down the popcorn so fast, I swear he doesn't even BREATHE! I know I should order my own, but it's so dang expensive!
Hungry girl obviously needs to spend more time at the movies. I've heard that about adding butter to popcorn as well, but you know what? You're watching a movie! You want to enjoy the experience and that most certainly involves butter on your popcorn. I can't eat the stuff without it either.
ReplyDeletethanks so much for stopping by today and leaving such a thoughtful comment over at my blog. Enjoy the rest of your week!
The theater we go to has a do-it-yourself butter dispenser. You can add all the butter your heart desires. We always get popcorn when we go to the movies. Sometimes I look forward to the popcorn more than the movie.
ReplyDeleteHungry girl is called "Hungry Girl" for one reason, because she frickin hungry!! Don't listen to her!
ReplyDeleteI sneak snacks in too, I figure that's not as bad as my aunt who sneaks alcohol in!
I mix M&Ms in with the popcorn. ;)
ReplyDeleteAnd Hello? If popcorn has no butter is it really popcorn? I think not.
But to be honest, I sneak in juice boxes for the kids. They don't like soda and $3 for water is just crazy.
Come down to Boulder and I would be happy to go with ya!
ReplyDeleteI love movie theatre nachos... so tasty and yummy!
The number of times I got the movie theatre each year is SO low* that it really doesn't matter what I eat. I ALWAYS get "butter" and a diet soda aaaaand a box of candy.
ReplyDelete*I have seen three movies in the theatre since my daughter was born two years ago, and at two of them, the showing was too early for there to be popcorn. Boooooo.
Movie theater popcorn with lots & lots & LOTS of butter is pretty much the only popcorn I eat. Mmmm YUM!
ReplyDeleteButtery movie popcorn is the best!
ReplyDeleteGetting popcorn without the butter is like getting a martini without the vodka - what's the point? :)
ReplyDeleteI think Hungry Girl would probably tell you to sneak in an apple and celery sticks next! Psssh, what's the fun in that? I'm with you - popcorn and chocolate (and Diet Coke!).
ReplyDeleteNow I'm hungry
ReplyDeleteLet's go . You get the nanchos and I get the popcorn with extra butter and we can get snocaps and 2 diet cokes!!
ReplyDeletemmmm...I totally want some movie theater popcorn now! nothing compares (esp with the extra butter!)
ReplyDeleteEver since I was a little girl we have snuck food into the movies, not to say that we always do, but it is ingrained in my person. I really like Junior Mints, but I too can find them for $1. Why pay more? And WHY don't they offer $1 candy? I'd like to see the Dilemma even though I heard it was bad.
ReplyDeleteMy husband isn't into popcorn, so I rarely eat it at the movies. Actually, we rarely go out to the movies anymore either! LOL
ReplyDeleteHubs always gets the extra butter. Sometimes you just have to have the good stuff!
ReplyDeleteI could forego the popcorn for the nibs or chocolate. Yum.
ReplyDeleteLisaDay
Did you know that Hungry Girl has her own TV show now? I might be one of the few people who did not know who she was until just recently.
ReplyDeleteI pretty much never get food at the movies. Most of the time I'm at the dollar movie theater, meaning I'm trying to go cheaply anyway, so I bring my own snacks. Sometimes if I go after work I'll even bring my dinner. Haha.
ReplyDeleteAnd popcorn without butter?? Absolutely just ughhhhh!!!! Styrofoam is right. ew.
I'll come with you! But only if I get to share your popcorn. . .
