He's Coming Home

I was in the middle of trying to organize the garage—and that is NOT going well, by the way—when it hit me.

Tom was coming home.

Tom was coming home next week.

TOM WAS COMING HOME NEXT WEEK!

Let me back up.

Remember when I wrote this post? Writing about how I hoped the Air Force would let us move next month so the kids wouldn’t miss school?

Well. The Air Force listened. They gave Tom his orders to Oklahoma.

Tom told me this on my Facebook page at first. When I wake up, he’s usually going to bed, you see. He said something like, “I have exciting news.”

And then he left me an inappropriate wall post quoting the song about doing it like they do on the Discovery Channel.

I was like, “Um, okay? Does that mean you got your orders?”

He KNOWS how impatient I am. He should have left me a message saying, “Hey, I got my orders.” Instead I had to wait for hours until he got on. He thinks it’s funny to torture me.

When he got on, he said that yes, he got his orders.

Our next step is hoping the military will move us. Our goal is to be in Oklahoma the week of June 13th.

Anyway, as soon as I found that out, I went into panic mode and surveyed all our stuff. How would the movers pack it all? What if they broke something? What if they STOLE something?

I was so busy worrying that I didn’t really focus that Tom would be home.

After nine months, my husband would be HOME.

And yes, he does have to go back to Korea on June 20th. Then he’s home for good in August.

“I have to shave!” I suddenly yelled in the garage. To no one. I ought to pull out my sexier underwear since I don’t think Tom fully appreciates my cotton ones. I have to...

...share the remote again.

...share my bed again.

I love having the bed to myself. Now I’m going to have to share it with a man. Who snores. And farts. And makes other weird noises.

What would I wear when Tom came home? A dress? Jeans? When Tom came home for Qatar (he was there for six months) I just had on jeans. Would that be okay in this situation?

What if he thought it was funny to wake me up early in the morning since his body clock was all messed up? Maybe he forgot how mean I am when I’m disturbed early in the morning. I wouldn’t want to snap at him—after all, he had been gone for nine months—but sometimes my body just goes on auto pilot and the second I’m woken up, I immediately start to curse.

Still.

Tom would be home.

My partner.

He’d be home to start a new chapter in our lives. The one where we move to Oklahoma.

Did I mention that we don’t travel well together? If we ever went on The Amazing Race, most of our conversation that we’d have back and forth would be bleeped out because of all the cursing that would be done.

This is going to be interesting…

  4. awww - congratulations! I live in VA Beach - lots of navy wives. I see how much they have to do when their husbands are sent away for months - sometimes years. I give you guys so much credit! You are an outstanding Superwoman!

  6. Yay!! It worked out!! (Told ya so!!!)

AND he gets to be home to help you move - score!!!

Why wouldn't the military move you?? If you have orders and a power of attorney (I'm sure you do), then YOU can, and should, go to the transportation office like NOW!!! In this economy there will be a shipper to move you, no worries.

    Congrats!!

  8. I don't envy the move at all. I was thinking about what it would take to move us in such short notice....and it just wouldn't be pretty.

Our amazing race episode would be the same. Bleep, Bleep, Bleep!

  12. If just traveling together can be difficult, moving together will be crazy.

Just don't do like I did once with my husband. I got so mad at him on a road trip that I left him in Maryland...four states away from our destination.

(In my defense, I did turn around for him.... four hours later).

  17. The dedicated soldier (and hero, even if he farts in YOUR bed) that has sacrificed much along with his family, is coming home!

    :)

I wouldn't worry about what to wear - it won't stay on long....

  20. YAY!

I kinda-sorta know how you feel about sharing the bed again. When my husband worked on the road and was gone for 1-2wks at a time, I LOVED having the bed to myself. :o)

But congrats! I know you and the kids are probably excited to see him, even if it's only for a little while.

  30. I wouldn't shave just yet. You're only going to have to do it all over again!

  31. I'm so glad he's coming home. It's always kind of overwhelming after a long deployment though. It took me a couple of weeks to get used to having Alex "in my personal space"! Tinker AFB? Cool!

  32. on the plus side you would have a conversation on amazing race. I would be in some jail for killing my husband in a foreign country.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It won't matter what you wear, it won't be on long anyway.

How about a sundress with nothing underneath.

  34. How exciting!

I'm cracking up at the fb thing- sounds like something my husband would do.

  36. I love this post because I think it's EXACTLY how I'd react if I were in the same situation. Oh and the hubs & I moving together? Not pretty. I feel ya.

  37. I hope everything goes as well as it can. And Yay! Your man is coming home! I hope you get at least a few good hours before he annoys you too much!

  38. Excellent news! All the anxiety is normal, and it will help you be ready for when he gets home. Enjoy!

  39. Congrats! Sounds like this summer will be exciting ;)

  40. Yay, he's coming home! Just think of it as a trial run for when he comes home for good. Moving is such a stressful time, even with the movers (or especially because of the movers) & traveling makes it even worse. But you'll get through & then the rest of the summer will whiz by because you'll be getting your house in order and the kids ready for school. Hooray!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh how exciting! I always worried about what to wear, how to wear my hair, what if he thought I looked differnt all those things! Plus add moving on top! Whew it is a load! I am so glad you will get to move in June to get the kids settled and into routine and get the WALK IN CLOSET!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yeah! Glad the move worked out and that you'll get to see each other soon.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Congrats on getting the orders!!

And bigger *YAY* on having Tom home :)

Good luck with the move xx

    ReplyDelete
  44. YIPEEE! Just go without the undies - then you don't have to decide on which to wear. Problem. Solved.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yayyyy! Congrats on the move to Oklahoma and the walk-in closet. We have one- it's awesome! I was hoping he would get his orders to Charleston, SC- they are sending a lot of people here from Wyoming. I just met a woman at work whose husband was just sent here with the AF. I am trying to get her to like sweet tea and she just thinks it's weird. I stare at her like she is crazy when she spits it out. And she does not like fried pickles with ranch.. I was like "You poor, skinny lady.. I will save you!"

  46. Wow! Exciting! You KNOW how excited I get when my husband comes home after 8 days...I can't even imagine how excited you must be!!!

Whenever we move, I just focus on the decorating that I'll get to do in our new place- that usually gets me through the sorting and the packing!

We had a walk-in closet in our last house, and it was better than I'd ever imagined it could be! I really, really miss it now. Congrats on getting yours!

  47. YAY!!!

How exciting. I think you should have a massive garage sale. Maybe a blog garage sale!
